  1. Brilliant!

I am hoping to organise the pick up later this week but will let you know as soon as I can.

I take it you are not far from Grahams place so may be worth discussing the 5th wheel etc before I come up to avoid a double trip at a later date....

    Will keep you posted.

    Thanks

    Nigel

I am in Stockport, about 40 miles south east of Southport. Here are some pictures of the coupling sorry about the quality but there is a Crusader day cab sat on top of it. It was sandblasted and primed about 2 years ago. If you want it and you would like me to take it over to Grahams before or if convenient for me as you are collecting the Constructor let me know. I have also sent you a PM.

  2. John, Many thanks for that.

It has now been won! and just working on the collection side of things.

The 5th wheel will very much be of interest to me as will a "period" winch which was originally fitted behind the cab.

My Crusader is happy upto to about 16 Tonnes on an underlift / suspended so will allow plenty of time for prop removal etc.

Not sure that the 200 mile (Each way) trip will do much for free flowing traffic on the M6 / M1 but it will certainly be a sight to see!

    Many thanks again.

    Nigel

Let me know when you are going to Grahams to collect, depending when it is I may come over and take some pictures.

I do not have a Scammell/Wild which would be the correct mechanical winch for this truck, but if you want a later hydraulic one I do have an ex-Crusader Plummett complete with hydraulic tank and spool valve.

    John Riley.

  3. Thanks for that Mike..... Looks like a job for a Crusader / EKA :-D

If you do win the bidding, and decide to collect it on suspend tow do not forget to allow plenty of time to disconnect those 2 rear props. With regards to the weight suggested earlier, as it is a Super Constructor I think the weight will be nearer 15 tonnes.

Should you require a 5th wheel coupling to go on it let me know as I have an ex-Crusader 35T tractor one avaliable (3.5 inch pin) complete with its mounting frame which will easily modify to fit.

    John.

  4. Well considering it's a defender I would be surprised if it couldn't! I mean at the end of the day unless it is a series you'll have no probs, and at the end of the day you can wire a normal car radio into a Series Land Rover and it would still work fine! I mean these vehicles are designed to power winch's and stuff as well, not to mention the fact that a defender is like a car with twice the power. Hope this helps Paul.

"Like a car with twice the power" who you trying to kid ?

  5. I have a Scammell Pioneer Tank transporter (30 ton) which like most of them out there does not have the 5th wheel coupling still in place. Does anyone out there know of or have any plans for the correct 5th wheel coupling which is unique to this vehicle. I am thinking of getting one made up but need to have some plans to work from.

I spoke to several people on the Scammell register but with no luck , and also seen the bottom half of the one at Cobbaton in Devon .

Can anyone out there help ???

There is a complete tractor and trailer knocking about somwhere, I think it is in the South Yorkshire area, perhaps try the MVT ?

  6. Martian clutches are notorious for sticking due to the clutch housing vent bieng at the top of the bell housing. If stood outside for long periods of time rain and condensation would drip in and run through the twin plate assembly. There was a modification to put a cover plate over the top to try and stop this happening. The other trick was to wedge a stick between the clutch pedal and the steering wheel so that the pedal was partially depressed keeping the plates and intermediate plate apart.

I am sure the plates will be avaliable as they were 12" Borg &Beck, not so sure where you will find an intermediate plate though. They may be the same as Stalwart ?

    John.

  7. Does anyone know of a Mk3A that still has the original ballast body. Someone has contactd me to find dimensions of my ballast body so they can build and fit one to their Mk3.

I have tried to explain to them that the ballast body fitted to my Antar is nothing like the 3 / 3A ballst body.

I am trying to get to a 3A with ballast body without having to drive hundreds of miles so I can get the measurements they require.

Mervyn Annetts springs to mind, and Mike Pickup.

I have lost Mike Pickup's phone number, can anyone PM me with this number if you know it.

Failing that can you point me to any other 3A's with ballast body.

    Cheers Mike

Hi Mike, as you quite rightly say Mervyn Annets has my old ANTAR Mk3a with the ballast box still on it, i have given Mervyns number to the person who is asking for the information (im sure it will be the same person). I do have a very old number for Mike Pickup which I will PM to you.

    John.

  8. hello again,

    thanks for the pointers.

so something in the region of this scammell

    http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/SCAMMELL-PIONE...d=p3286.c0.m14

would be more the weight to be considering?

i won't be in a hurry, but equally don't want to be shunted off the road or cook the engine / axles with work.

have looked at bedford RL and commer Q4 - i know people who have towed showman's with both. apparently it will do it, but just not the right machine.

there's a Reo on ebay that i considered, though by the time i'd made it diesel the cost would be getting high for a tatty vehicle, plus the rating on those is pretty low really.

just wait n see what comes along....

a friend had a 6x6 1942 or 4 mack, did the job beautifully.

bearings, seals etc i'm guessing are sourcable using the measurments. what about when it comes to new axle or gearbox time? are there some types that are more easily soucable than others?

thanks again for the pointers, really helps,

    sam

Just picking up on your comment about putting a diesel in a Reo, it already is diesel (multifuels will run on anything between petrol and diesel).

DOES YOUR LIVING VAN HAVE AIR BRAKES ? YOU HAVE ALSO GOT TO CONCIDER STOPPING AS WELL AS GOING !

  9. Hello all

None of the diff lock air actuator pull (push?) rods move when switching the diff lock control to position 3, or any warning lights come on. Can I run the air system from a compressor to save idling the engine all the time, gets very smelly underneath, also hot bits. It has been bought to use, so the diff locks have to work. I have got a wheeled loader stuck in 2' mud and a Caterpillar tracked loader with the tops of the tracks under the mud, see the problem?

I bought it from the advert on milweb, £7k, Hampdens wanted £8k. It is road registered and had a drive in it, seemed fine but it is of course 25 years old. I have no experience of HGVs so a bit of a difference, keep hitting trees in the wood and bending things, trouble is lots of trees and only one S26.

    Bob

couple up your compressor to the FRONT RED palm coupling, it will save you idling the truck whilst you play with the diff locks. It will also save your lungs and eyes, it is a Rolls Eagle !!!

  10. Hi All,

Just thought I'd let you know that I own one of the ex Australian Scammel (Leyland) contractors and have plans to restore it 'maybe one day'

I served in 26 Transport Squadron, Royal Australian Corps Of Transport at Puckapunyal which was co located with 158 Tank Transport Troop, primary operators of the 'Scammels' they were known.

Unfortunately my vehicle has lost it's original Cummins engin, winch, fithe wheel coupling and radiator /Grille assembly.

    Cheers

    Phill

Would also like to see pictures as I visited Pukapunyal in 1990 and photographed a number of the contractors based there. Not to be pedantic but it is always MM and LL, SCAMMELL that is.

    John.

  11. Hello to everyone, first post after joining.

Got to get the question asked, have just bought an S26 SLDT, where can I get a workshop manual for it? The hissing of air makes it immobile some times, and there is a lot of pipework to check.

How many other people wasted hours getting the tipper to tip because the tipper/crane control lever is marked back to front?

    Bob

Did you buy it from Hamptons ?

  12. I remember you. We used to meet up at Stonleigh during the 1980's each year with our Explorers, you may remember me (John Riley) we used to drive ours the 120 miles or so from Stockport. There were 6 of us who owned it as well as a Champ each, so we used to take turns at driving and split the fuel between us. One year you took some nice photo's of the two Explorers and a Pioneer together which you very kindly sent us copies of, well before digital cameras !!! I recall that you also had a 7 1/2 tonne ecovery trailer as well.

Sorry to say the Explorer is no longer in my ownership but is still alive now residing at Duxford sporting a Meadows 6DC630 diesel.

Nice to hear from you Alan.

    John Riley

(Still in Stockport, with some even bigger toys now)
