  1. This is my video. I was there collecting bits for my restoration, the video was taken in 2007. There are none left. They were in the standard ex-Withams condition, missing the engine, messier dampers, optics etc. They are the ones nobody else wanted, or bid on in the tender sales.

I can confirm that there was 1 left, still there last week.

  2. hi do you always take pictures of your friends legs when they have there back towards you and are you sure it was the vehicle that did the bruising???? thanks 50

Evening Mark, as I said in the post, Lynne took the pictures, a little bit more concerning if you look closer is Ian's cudly toys on the background !

  3. Just had a request for a late entry to GDSF heavy Haulage playpen. From a chap in Wiltshire with a Commander.

The only Commander I am aware of in private hands in UK is the prototype that was sold off many years ago. Does anyone know of a Commander in private Ownership, who can fill in any history, or the chain of ownership that now finds it in Pewsey?

    Mike,

Surely if you have just had a late request entry for GDSF you have the persons contact details on the request ? just give him a call and ask him where it came from.

  4. Sorry John - the interior of an OT-90 does not lend itself to carrying the cam-corder. At least - not if you want it to be in one peice at the end of the session! :)

It's a good point you make there about the noise heard though - with the headsets on everything changes.

That is also an interesting point, here is a picture of my friends legs after he had a ride in the winch operators position in the M578 on the Friday afternoon session in the arena. He was trying to us the camcorder, by Friday I had gained a bit of confidence in driving it at speed and it was now nice and muddy so it was also sliding around a bit, I managed to launch Ian up in the air, he came crashing down again and so did the seat back hiting him in the back of the legs and knocking him to the floor inside the turret. He did manage to keep hold of the camcorder whilst all this was going on, I will post the footage when I get it off him ! His wife who took the pictures when he got back (on the Monday after) was not impressed !!!

  5. A number of M578 have been sold in Denmark now, and i think a couple have been exported.

its a nice bit of kit to have when your working on tanks and the big stuff. But they are not very good at pulling things due to the light weight.

We had an accident at a show in denmark, where a Abbot skidet in to overgrown ditch and flip over, they tried to pull it, on to its tracks and up with a M578, but tracks on the m578 just spun. then they tried a Centurion with a better result.

That is why they are equipped with a 27 tonne winch and a ground anchor, when the spade is emplaced they will pull a massive ammount.

  6. Saw this one going around the arena a few times - it looked and sounded very, very, good!! :) :yay: :)

Did anybody get any video of it in the arena as when you are driving it you do not get the sound that you hear outside the vehicle ?

    John.

  7. I visited the first Beltring show to pick up 2 Antar cluch plates off Peter Gain who had a stall their. I recall that there was an FWD SU-COE in attendance. I then continued on to visit Hardwicks yard in Ewell, South London to view an Antar trailer. I was their this year with the M578 Tracked Armoured Recovery Crane.

  8. Just bought a book on old time heavy haulage. It is a collection of articles from certain Military and commercial vehicle magazines. I was surprised to read in there that the Mk3 Antar had a road speed of 40MPH. I thought that seems fast so I looked in the user handbook and at max engine revs the Mk3 Antar does 35 MPH but elsewhere in the handbook the maximum RECOMMENDED road speed is 30 MPH. For the record the relevant handbooks also show that my model of Antar , the C6T (again erroneously identified in this magazine based book as a prototype Mk3!!!) does 32.5 MPH at max engine revs and the Mk2 did 28.5 MPH. Seems there is still a lot of room for myth busting......

Incidentally the Mk2 had an identical transmission ratios to the C6T. The C6T is faster because the diesel Rolls C6 actually revved higher than the Petrol Rover Meteorite....

I would agree with you Mike, did many miles in my Mk3 and on a number of occasions got my wife to clock my speed when travelling behind in the car. It would cruise happily at 35mph with a little bit left over, was revving at around 1950-2000 rpm. 40mph was never achieved.

For those unfamiliar with Antar rear axles, the inner wheels are carried on one set of studs (135) The outer wheel is carried on an adaptor ring that has another ten studs. (un-numbered but extreme left of illustration.)

The adaptor ring is carried on ten more studs (145) that mount it onto the hub. The half shaft drive flange (143) (or the dummy half shaft cap) is sandwiched between the adaptor ring and the hub. Taking out the half shaft means removing the outer road wheel complete with its adaptor ring, removing the half shaft, sliding the dummy half shaft cap over the studs (145) and remounting the outer road wheel. This is not an easy job, since all four hubs must also be jacked in turn, before the road wheel can be removed. The outer road wheel with the adaptor ring is over 5 Cwt.

Not giong to argue with that explanation, only to add that my ANTAR came with 2 dummy caps, someone must have aquired another one during a recovery operation.

  10. OK, we must have a race one day, to avoid spinning the actual diffs (which only have plain bearings) you will need to pull all 4 half shafts, fit the dummy ends and stow 4 oily half shafts. I only have to disconnect one companion flange from the leading axle and tie up the front prop (12 nuts?)

I don't think that when in service they were too interested in speed. Removing the half shafts means that you are not "back driving" the worm and wheel assemblies during the tow, reducing the posibility of damage to the axle and reducing drag slightly, at that sort of weight everything would help !!!

Having said that I think I would prefer to pull the halfshafts as the easier of the two jobs.

    John.

  11. In that post #79 what would the max allowed speed be for a combination like that ? 12-20 miles per hour ? And what distance would be allowed as the Antars wheels would be turning the transmission the whole time .

Most Antars carried dummy hub caps which could be fitted if the half shafts were removed, which I can asure you would be easier than removing the props (they are big), this would mean that even the differentials would not be turning.

I am also puzzled about the "Technical Imposibility" as this is a real photo.

    John.

  12. Has anyone got any idea what pressure should be in the Michelin XL 16.00x20 on a Foden 6x6 limber? Also I been told that the tyres should be rotated front to back so they don't wear uneven, I have a very noticeable wobble on the steering, bang on 40 mile a hour, just above or just below, it goes, thing is that when we go to shows the MK and MJ that I travel with drive at 40. If this was a slight wobble I would properly put up with it, but the cab shakes worst than belly-dancers navel!

Going to War and peace, will be in the area behind the arena as usual, now I have sorted the living boxes on the truck, I will be able to crane them off so I can take the truck around the arena, and down to Tesco's!

Suggest that you travel at 65mph and get the kettle on for the bedford boys !!!
