  1. What a strange way to carry out the recovery. Can only presume the Explorer got there first and was being dragged back towards the Saladin as it winched and then the Martian was used as additional anchor. If both had arrived at same time then it would be a no brainer to use the Martian winch.

  2. This photo from March 1993 shows a Scorpion that I had purchased by tender being loaded onto the late Frank Derricks lowloader.

    Posted justed for your interest.........

Bob, at least the Scorpion clearly had an engine in it ! I remember a certain Abbot arriving back in the Northwest engineless !

  3. t when we knew him

I think Richard was reffering to the tractor unit in the picture, but you are quite right he did have a number of Diamond T's over the years both ballast tractors and wreckers, latterly he ran a postwar Autocar 6x4 with Detroit 8-92 in it, thats where I got the bug for Detroits from !

Sadly Frank died about 8 years ago from a MRSA related ilness.

  4. Bob, was Frank's truck a Mack?

No Richard it was a White, Ex Ruttle plant hire in Lancashire, spent many happy hours in the passenger seat or sat on the edge of the bunk if there were 3 of us in there. It was fitted with 13 SPEED Fuller, however closely I watched Frank changing gear the change pattern never seemed the same !

  5. still waiting !

You will be taking the longest tacho break ever !!! I must admit there were occasions when I passed it I thought I could easily have that away, just nip over Woodhead with the ANTAR one Sunday morning, back the trailer up to it and just winch it on, then nip back over Woodhead. No one would have batted an eyelid !

After it had gone it did look like it had actually been fixed to the plynth, there were signs of burning gear having been used. It is understood that it was actually craned onto a low loader.

  6. Believe it or not all the work for that project was done in Heywood, Greater Manchester 2 years ago. The Centurion is the ex Phil Benham one. It was completly gutted and then carefully cut into 5 or 6 slices so that it could be containerised. the motive unit is a large electric motor with some big reduction units connected to one final drive. We were not allowed to photograph it during its creation. The turret had about 10" milled of the top and a large steel plate welded on so the whole thing would be stable when assembled upside down.

  7. Sorry again for the dumb questions, but as some of you may know we are looking at getting an FV432.

My concerns are if it breaks down, and it cant be fixed at the roadside, how do I get it back to its storage?

Are there companies specifically for recovering larger vehicles or MV's?

Also, what if I throw a track, or worse both!! Is it a case of being a 14tonne uncontrollable wrecker?

With regards to your 3rd question," throwing a track" is a term not to be taken literally, mostly this reffers to a situation of "de-tracking" where the track comes over the idler or drive sprocket but not completely off. It usually causes a situation where the suspension is compressed and the track is jammed. If the vehicle is properly maintained and driven de-tracking is highly unlikely. De-tracking 2 tracks is near imposible as you would have carried on after the first one for that to happen.
