There are in fact 3 Champ military engines
1 Rolls Royce built, originally painted black with cast alluminium rocker cover, with BSF /BSW threads, very rare
2 Rolls Royce built, originally painted blue with cast alluminium rocker cover, with UNF / UNC threads, quite rare
3 Austin built to Rolls Royce design, painted blue with pressed steel rocker cover, with UNF / UNC threads, quite common.
The 2 latter rocker covers were interchangeable so to be absolutely sure you have a UNC/UNF Rolls built engine refer to engine serial number, the ACOC website will then advise.

Welcome aboard looking forward to pictures of the 8x8. As you can see in the list below I have the only M746 8x8 in the UK.

Leyland took over Scammell in 1955, long before the Crusader was introduced in 1968. Front and rear axles were Leyland group products.
Over 500 Crusaders were built at Guy Motors Wolverhampton with GHV chassis numbers.
I stand corrected, thanks Mike.

Crusader - Scammell or Leyland?
I have always considered the Crusader to be a Scammell product, albeit that some appear badged as Leylands.
Without wishing to upset sensitivities, how much influence did Leyland have in the design of the Crusader?
Who can explain the nuances (and the facts) surrounding the Crusader?
Where was the design work done (and by whom)?
Leyland had no influence on the design, just the fact that by the end of Crusader production they "owned" Scammell and wanted their name on the front, by the time the S26 came along they realised the value of the name.
All Crusader chassis numbers are WHV (Watford Heavy Vehicle) so were all built at Tolpits Lane Scammell plant.

Hi all.
My annual insurance renewal for my military vehicles is due on the 29/03/12.
I have been insured with Footman James for years and been quite happy paying on average £150-£170 per year - until now.
I received a letter from them asking me to contact them in regard to my policy renewal. The letter stated -
"Due to a change in underwriting terms and conditions we are unable to offer a renewal quotation on the current basis."
I rang them and was asked if all my vehicles are ex-military? Yes I replied. Then asked if I had a limited mileage policy. No I replied.
They then put me on hold for around 5 minutes.
They came back to me, eventually" and said they could offer me a renewal - £310 for the year!
I said, I'm sorry but I don't quite understand why my renewal has shot through the roof all of a sudden.
The lady replied well you have an American vehicle that costs more to insure and you have a trailer which is classed as a flatbed lorry!
I tried to reason with her saying the American truck is a WWII wrecker that does maybe 150 miles a year at most, a 55 Tonne Chieftain ARRV that will cover at most 20 miles off road a year and the Love trailer is not a flatbed trailer but a living trailer that can not carry a load.
However, I didn't matter what I said the price was £310 per year.
Now to state that I am very pee'd off I a massive understatement.
I have tried a few more places but they want to insure each vehicle on a single policy. This is obviously working out at a ridicules cost.
I have informed Footman James I shall not be renewing with them - I'm beginning to wonder if this is the beginning of the end in regard to fair insurance costs for our hobby.
Be aware if you are renewing with Footman James - you may be in for a shock.
Can anyone recommend an insurance company that covers a group of military vehicles for a fair price.

Evening Mark,
I have the whole fleet insured with AdrianFlux after getting no sense out of Premium choice 3 years ago who I had been with for 27 years one way or another (A C Miles originally). They are easy to deal with and very reasonable on price.
John .

If you have problems let me know, checked today and my local factor has the common thread sizes and can get the unusual ones usually next day
Nigel
Ah but they will be modern ones that are aluminium, the Explorer ones were cast steel.

Point of info, the Scammell Commander that was the gate guardian at Buller Bks which left a few months ago returned today on low loader looking all very shiny!
Brought on a low-loader with a Foden tractor unit that looked suspiciously like a ex mil one. I think it was a 4000 series unit.
Picture ?

Just had a look at my house, I have a 6 foot high fence but you can still clearly see my Crusader and Reo. The camera must have been over 7 foot high when filming !

Hi,
Nice pictures, do you have any more of the vehicles in the 4th from last picture? Do you know if any of them are for sale and what sort of condition are they in inside and do they have engines?
Regards,
Mark
By the length of time they have been there (i have a set of the same pictures but taken at least 10 years ago) they are for sale but at prices that reflect current retail for fully restored versions, Sidney Zetler is a very shrewd man ! (Hope I spelt his name right did that without going and getting his business card out). The place is well worth a visit though Mark.

Cannot remember the FV number but it was the 50/60s standard 2 ton built by various trailer makers adapted for all sorts of different uses. Two axle drawbar type with Ackerman steering and 2 line air brakes, on 9.0x20 sand tyres. Not legal behind a Landy as no brakes (unless you have a landy with air brake outlets).
Did once see one converted to carry a Bren Carrier towed behind a Jimmy with the air lines just cable tied under the rear of the Jimmy to look like they were coupled up ! It was out in Normandy and the owner was from the UK.

As a reasonably regular visitor to AF Ross I can advise that the Dorchester has gone, not sure where but I understand it went for restoration. Coincidentally I'm going to Scotland this week too !

It is on the front of the injector pump, had to bleed it every time I started the damned thing when I owned it if there were more than 4 hours in between starts.

Just been reading a book about British Military vehicle colours (Warpaint Vol 1, and very good it is to)
In one section the author talks about the Stalwart listing as an armoured vehicle as it has an armoured cab
I always thought the cab was aluminium not armoured.....................or have I been wrong all these years :embarrassed:
Stalwart cab is not aluminium, it is steel of about 1/8" thick so not armoured either.

Sorry to disagree but that is not Douglas in the soundtrack, I suspect though that it may be Paul Southerington driving with the handbrake on ! for got to ask him this morning when he gave me a guided tour of the contents of the refurbished storage hangar which is now always kept locked.
