  1. Great clip, especially as it's my mk1 steel bodied Antar being driven by Roger, does anybody know when it was filmed?

I disagree with Rogers comment that it's not fun to drive, as I think it's bloody great fun.

Must have been a good while ago as that ANTAR was "swapped" out of the REME reserve collection for a more appropriate vehicle at least ten years ago.

  2. If someone can give me an FV number for the wheels and/or number of bolt holes I'll take a look next time I'm there, if you like? He might not necessarily know what vehicle they're from anyway.

Hirst's know exactly what they have, they are all NOS Chieftain road wheels in stacks of 5 on the purpose made carrier. They primarily sell them to the traction engine boys for retreading road wheels. They even have the facility to turn out the centre of the wheel so it can be split then opened out in rollers to fit the diameter of the large road wheels on traction engines. These are then welded to the original steel wheel to give a full solid rubber tyre.

  3. I spoke to the seller last thursday evening, he says it is complete but they have not had it running but sees no reason why it won't run. As previously stated all the parts that could be removed without it affecting its outside appearance are for sale to fund a cosmetic refurbishment of the outside of the vehicle. An absolute shame and further proof of how skint the mod are !

  4. I have a champ with a winch which is a Turner originally built for a landrover of the same era, the PTO is a very well engineered copy of the original albeit a fabricated casing not cast as the original ones were. Malcolm Scots civi Champ has an original PTO.

I bought my Champ about 12 years ago with the winch already fitted by the previous owner who had his own machine shop, it is in very original condition never having been "restored" only maintained. It has stood in my garage since purchased awaiting the day when I stop playing with the bigger toys, then is will get a nut and bolt restoration. I even have a brand new set of Dunlop Trakgrip tyres for it.

  5. OK, OK! I'll put my hand up to being a boring old fart, then. I did watch it, if only for the MV bit, and yes I did snigger a bit, as well. It's a pity they didn't have the CETs anchor to fire, that could have been interesting with the right aim :-D

Ah the elusive CET anchor.... would like one of those....

  6. I was talking to the RE group at Chatham a while back, as I was thinking about buying one. There advice 'If you can get it going a great tool, until you shut down again'. :-D

Don't be put off by some hamfisted squaddie, if you understand vehicle engineering you will have no trouble keepinig one in good order. They are complex but a super toy to own, had one for 6 years now, and yes there are 50 ABRO refurbished ones sitting at Withams awaiting disposal.

  7. About the same as the New Holland I use, provided the boom isn't extended. It does a good job of moaning if you overload it, with a buzzer and flashing red light saying "Stop"!

Any machines built since October 2010 are subject to EN15000, if overloaded they will cut hydraulics, so keep hold of your old machines for jobs like this !

  8. the t16 that was outside went to george sanders of urmston who restored it with his brother from a shell to running condition. i also went to grange cavern as a kid but my memory is sh1te but i do remember an antar outside. i heard off someone that the sexton didn't meet the reserve of £1200 at the auction, i'd happily give them that for it now :D

I've got the auction catalogue somewhere Rick with all the prices penciled in it, must dig it out ! more nostalgia. I also have loads of pictures stashed somewhere. Their most famous exihibit was the LRDG Chev smuggled out of the Libian desert in the early 1980's by a bunch of collectors. From what I recall they used a Bedford MK craned or winched it on the back then sheeted it up and drove away.

  9. I don't have any welding gear and I need some fabrication work and a small amount of welding to be done.

Attached is a picture of my Turret Basket from the Saladin. The Commanders hatch was pilfered from it some time ago and the rain got in, causing some localised rusting . The rest of the basket is in good condition, but this part needs a reapir section fabricating and welding to a good standard. I dont mind paying a reasonable amount. I am in Derbyshire, near Ashbourne . Any takers ? You can do the work at my place , or you can cut the rusty part out and take it away for fabrication? I know its a complicated section , but someone out there may be familiar with repairs to vesels etc. Failing that , anyome know where there are any NOS baskets ( Now that is a long shot !) . On the main photo , you can see the rusty section. the other picture shows the reverse.

Look for a local welder / fabricator I am absolutely sure they would be able to do it. I can recommend one in Stockport but that will add extra cost for transport.
