1. My great uncle was gassed on The Somme, and struggled on until 1928, before his lungs finally rotted away.

Struggling a bit to see how a supermarket could be built on consecrated ground, I always thought it was forbidden to erect a building in such a place??????

Amazing what supermarket money can do to planning departments !

  2. I think the Dorchester was the Armoured Command Vehicle, there's one at the Royal Signals museum too. The armoured cars were like a Ferret's big brother. I've not seen one in the UK but there is one in Holland.

The "Matador chassis based" statement put me along the lines of the Dorchester. Matador is live axle on leaf springs, the Daimler armoured car was somthing completely different, the Dingo's big brother on coil springs and fully independant whishbone suspension.

  3. A quick question...

Is there an example of the Matador chassis based 'AEC Armoured Car' (any MK) in private hands in the UK? Also....which/if any museums have one????

    Quick answer,

They were nicknamed "Dorchester" and I'm sure there is one at Duxford on display.

  4. The top items are CET steer units, unusual in as much as the core (centre bit) is a diff steer unit similar to those used in fv432 and the outer bits are skid steer assys (like a bulldozer). They were conceived to drive on road using diff steer and skid steer whilst digging!

These are upgraded units as sappers found it easier to dig fast using diff steer and surprise surprise they broke. So a mod programme was introduced to enable them to do same (The stresses whilst digging using diff steer are horrendous and the intermediate shafts snapped like carrots, doing something they were never designed to do). There are some quite exotic materials and mods inside.

I gather the modded units worked well. I can't say I blame the poor old sappers, if you're being shot at whilst digging you want to do it fast and with the mods boy could they do it fast. The easy wat to tell they're modded is by the stiffening webs on the outer casings. Jerry

Thanks for that snippet, I have had CET's for the past 7 years and was not aware of that fact, will check mine has the uprated one on Sunday.

  5. The info I have found says that the prototypes were built at Leeds but production vehicles at Nottingham. This is the internet though so it could be all lies..!

Someone told me the hulls were all built at ALVIS as they had all the alluminium welding skills / capabilities.

  6. Nice one, now you have added your location, we can see where you are from and apreciate logistics and ambient temperatures.

I know nothing about CVRT's (apart from selling a few bits now and again when I come by them).

My reccomendation is forget those poxy little toy tanks and get yourself a CET, Withams have plenty of completely refurbished ones for sale. At least you can do something with it like dig, doze winch and wade.

Sorry just winding up the CVRT boys, I took my tracks test in one it was great !

  7. How about if you set off to move your friends vehicle with a full fuel tank, move said vehicle, friend accompanies you to the filling station and pays the bill to refill the fuel tank, no profit made just covering the cost of the move as clearly that will be the biggest expense. He can then always drop you a few quid to cover all the other expenses such as tyre wear and maintenance consumables.

Hi, i run the dingo register (with Danny Bosma from the Netherlands).

Ive obtained from Philip Winterburn, some dingo photo's of acar he used to own.

It was unusual in that it had a tow hitch fitted. and painted sand/green 70's style camo pattern.

Philip cannot remember the F number.

We would like to findthis out to try and trace it / establish if it still exists or is another thathas magically vanished over the years. Is this the same one you restored, can you assist in identifying her?

We are up to about 200 surviving vehicles now! is this another one?

    Cheers

    Singe,

Yes DSU553 is my old Dingo, unfortunately I do not have any record of the documentation, it all went to Phil Winterburn Senior who sadly died a few years ago when I sold it to him back in the early 90's. I manufactured and fitted the tow hitch so I could tow a Champ trailer to shows with all my camping equipment. About 4 years ago I saw it for sale on Milweb at a very reasonable price of £7795. It sold imediately, I think Marcus Glenn may have purchased it. When I had it amongst the documentation was the release papers from Long Kesh in Northern Ireland where it was last in service.

  9. Both my vehicles need oil changes.

does anyone have any recomendations where to buy the oil, i need sae 30, ep 90, ep 250 and a big bucket of grease.

local to Sussex would be good or a good mail order service.

or a good cash deal..... :-\

    thanks

what do you use the EP250 in ?

  10. Thanks Ian,

Nice picture of this mark 3 on Antar Gallery thread 5. Perhaps you can enlarge on the situation. Do you know which one this is, as it appears to have no markings on it, in either photograph? Is this the end product of the Rush Green pair?

Alternatively, if "theashcollection" could return with some information on it, it would be most appreciated as the Ebay book advert attached to the Antar link is decidely uninteresting. Visual post or pm fine. Thanks.

    Bw,Mike.

That is the ex Alan B ANTAR, yes the product of the 2 sold AND COLLECTED out of Rush Green. Funny how I have looked at that photo in post 5 a few times and always saw it as the Ex - Manchester Airport one which Brian Bailey owns (actually thought that it was Brian squesing down the side of it). The picture in post 6 is of course the Mcr Airport / BB one clearly distinguished by the different front bumber without headlight holes and the short exhaust tail pipes.
