  1. How does one go about gaining access to the archive of pictures at Bovington?:-D
  2. The bin is held on by 8 studs welded to the hatch in two rows of 4 with a spacer on each stud to allow the bin to clear the outside edge of the hatch. They were located well in from the outside edge of the hatch, maybe 4in's or so. I took extensive pictures of my rebuild, but sadly not of that part. Ross
  3. How many extra jerry cans were you expected to carry, or did it depend on the exercise?
  4. Haven't bean to War and Peace for a few years now, the Irish ferry hop makes the trip quite costly. But I am seriously considering a nice replica 7.62 for my ferret, Andy. I can (I think) get a 30cal at the right price so a nice cheep mount for it could be the way to go.
  5. Welcome fellow stalwart owner, love to see some pics. Check out my restoration forum. http://hmvf.co.uk/forumvb/showthread.php?25641-Alvis-Stalwart-18-ET-29-restoration-project/page15
  6. Ok my bad, yes I should have known better. Hear is a link to the page I was looking at. At 3.45 mins in you will see two ferret's, check out the bin added on to the rear of the vehicle where the VRN is normally painted. http://www.britishpathe.com/video/exercise-storm-king-on-salisbury-plain/query/ferret+scout+car
  7. That's fascinating, I had no idea that the size of the fuel tank was a problem. My observation was based on ease of access to the engine bay. were all ferret's fitted with extra bins?
  8. That was kinda my point. It might be easer and cheaper to change the mount to the Browing and fit a 30 cal instead of a GPMP.
  9. It seams that the Browing gun mount is just as hard to get as the Gpmg.
  10. Not quite related, but a question for the experts. Has anyone ever seen or have on there vehicle a bin like this on the back, a much better idea than the cage bin over the engine bay I think. Mod Edit: Copyrighted images removed
  11. Were ferret's not normally fitted with one 353 and one 351/2 for remote operating? It meant you could hide the vehicle in the trees and set up a radio in a trench away from it. You could also set the radio to remote and plug in a remote handset using don 10 cable. We use to do this a lot in the Artillery. Does any one know the dimensions of the triangle shaped radio frame fitted into Ferret's for mounting the 351/2 on. As I wish to make one up. Thanks Ross
  12. Good work guys, another ferret nailed, I know your pain as I am one of many trying to find there ferrets history. Would love to see some pics on hear. Ross
  13. That was my thought too, far easer to knock out an existing window and turn it into a set of double doors, at least then you can take it out again. Ross
  14. A Fantastic looking champ mate, it's a real credit to you. Have followed this thread from the start, your a great inspiration for me, thanks and keep it up. PS, what's your next project (once you sort out your wiring of course) ?
  15. Not sure this is the right place for this thread, but hear it goes. A lot , if not most of the mechanical parts in our much loved military vehicles are standard of that time. So if you need a bearing for the front axle of your 1942 Morris commercial, or an oil seal for a bevel box on a ferret, where did you find it? was it the same part as the oil seal in Massey Ferguson tractor? My point is if you found a hard to get part in an unexpected place, please post it on hear and keep our green machines rolling!
  16. Well I'm not going to get into how much I paid for certain items, because that's not fair, Richard does a fantastic job and I have found if he hasn't got it then most likely it cant be got! But things like oil seals, bearings etc are worth shopping around for. When it came to overhauling the brake master cylinder for my Stalwart he hadn't got the part, but Past Parts had a modern replacement part that I needed, saving me from getting the hole unit from Richard. It's true, who else is going to have a NOS Commanders seat for a Ferret, but shop around for the other stuff, you will be surprised what other vehicles used the same parts......... I smell a good topic for a new Thread.:-D
  17. I always found Richard a bit expensive, but supper fast, have often received parts before I have even sent the money off. He is very easy to deal with too, I mucked up the VAT difference between Ireland and the UK and he didn't bother me with it until my next order. :-D
  18. Hi Guys. can any one give me the dimensions of the triangle shaped radio frame fitted into Ferret's for mounting the 351/2 on. As I wish to make one up. Thanks Ross
  19. Hi All, things are a little slow with the Stalwart at the moment. Getting married next month so that seams to have taken over most of my spare time. I have also bean working on extending my work shed area as the parts storage seams to have taken over. This will mean the doner vehicle can be stripped, the parts put into storage and the hull sent in scrap. This will probably take priority over the restoration of 18ET29 for a while. But keep following and posting, and thanks to you all for your support and advice. Ross
  20. When it came to doing my gearbox it worked out cheaper to do a part-x for a NOS one, just as well I did as the casing turned out to be cracked, probably as a result of the fire!
  21. I did see on another thread someone doing an adapter for the oil filter, so you can use the standard disposable ones. But I cant remember the thread, sorry. You can get new old stock filters in the UK from Banisters. If that's any help:-|.
  22. yea, I cant remember what its called but that sounds like the stuff:rotfl:.
  23. just read this thread, good luck with the restoration your really going to town on it. Ross
