  1. So are you being put in charge next year?
  2. It's easy enough to swap tracks but the rubber pads are integral to the track so you cannot swap pads over like on a 432. There is steel track and there is rubber track. The links are integral in both cases and have no replaceable wearing surface.
  3. I suspect you're not that bothered! Just happy to have it preserved.
  4. Good question....... Argentina would be a likely candidate though I think their tanks had been through at least one re-engine programme before then.
  5. Yes, it was. The T stands for transformer, meaning to change or alter. It's quite an easy mod, as the multibank and radial use the same clutch and there is plenty of room for the engine! New engine mounts are required and the electrics are different regarding the ignition. They also seemed to use the rear mounted radial installation aircleaners though I'm not sure why as it would have been very easy to use the M4A4 cleaners in their original locations.
  6. There is restoration and restoration. Strictly speaking, to restore a vehicle is to return it to some previous state. We accept restore to mean 'as new' though there is much interpretation to this..... In the case you cite Mike, your Matador could be restored in any of it's previous guises, all would be correct. As for originality, I think most of us accept that there will and indeed must be compromises in some areas such as tyres, batteries, canvas and such. I think the phrase 'as original' is more correct. At the end of the day, it's up to the owner.
  7. He does but it's not together enough to be used for the intended purpose!
  8. My wallets ok thanks. Contrary to popular opinion, you don't have to be wealthy to own armour. Mind you, I have had my Sherman for 18 years!
  9. I would not have been impressed at that point. If he admitted that he failed you deliberately on a point that would normally have been an observation simply to get at the school operator, I would have been taking it up with the area office.
  10. Still tracklayers so exempt from testing but not 'steered by their tracks' so can be driven on a 'normal' licence.
  11. Not allowed as a class of vehicles though the speed limit would also prevent them being on the motorway.
  12. Tracklaying vehicles are exempt from testing because they are tracklayers, simples! There is a speed limit, 20 mph ISTR but it's not well known and shouldn't be an issue unless you have a problem.....not that I am suggesting you break the law. :stop: :-D All classes of roads except motorways.
  13. Display flying and pleasure flights are two different things. Crowd overflight is allowed in the course of taking off and landing. As the operator would need an AOC, the site would be approved for use. Turbine helicopters are noisy though.....!
  14. I'll be there Wednesday morning....
  15. Lloyd, yes, it is. It's outside the county, but only just! Adrian
  16. Jim has a radial in his so with an M4A2 (there is one near me) you would have the three main engine types. We could have a race!
  17. 5000 hrs will last them years! They would be lucky to put more than 25 hrs a year on it.
  18. Jim, is my bow gun case catcher ready? Can I collect next week?
  19. In the interior shot, you can see the hand throttles and twin tachos of the M4A2 installation. The position of the exhaust fishtails is also a clue.
  20. Bummer! They have done well though....:-D
  21. To get 38 mph out of a Sherman, you have to run the propshaft at over 4200 rpm..... I would be concerned at that speed. It's not just more power from the later injectors, he must be running higher revs. The 6046 engine pack does gear up the output speed compared to the crankshaft speed but even so! When the tanks were new, it was not recommended to run them at more than 20 mph for sustained periods because the roadwheel tyres were apt to fly off the rims! Looked impressive though!
  22. There is no connection between tracklaying vehicles (steered by their tracks) and goods vehicles. You need a standard licence with H group, the vehicle needs to be registered, taxed, insured and 'roadworthy'. There is no prescribed list of features that make a tracklayer roadworthy, they are exempt from testing but it would be for the court to decide in the event of a problem. Some vehicles have features that may make them a problem to register and operate on the roads.
