  1. Maybe I should just shut up... but 'll have one more go. :-D What I was trying to say was that a vehicle that saw active service may be seen as more historic than one that sat in stores (cos it has bullet holes for example) but in fact the one in stores may be the most 'original' and therefore a better representation of the vehicle. Does that make more sense? :dunno:
  2. Now you've made me question myself! If the Dak was put back in regular RAF service, would it then not be historic anymore? And does the fact the RAF Memorial Flight operate one already mean it isn't historic ? That's not 'regular service' though, so I reckon it shouldn't count.... Hmmm :?
  3. Hi all, I have made some great contacts on the Harley adventure, so thanks to those who've helped - although must say most contacts were provided thru re-enactor forums rather than vehicle Owners on HMVF! Maybe 'HMVF members have bigger equipment' ... now theres a catchline for you!! I'll bug you again sometime soon on the other ideas - all of which are for bigger machinery! Maybe we can kill a number of birds with one stone at Beltring... Cheers, Phil
  4. All, As I was a teenager during the Falklands Conflict, with a dream to join the RN (at the time!), I have always had an interest in the history of that period. With the 25th anniversary imminent, I thought I'd start a topic for any anecdotes or recollections from the conflict. I have no idea if any members were involved - but maybe they know people who were, or may even have come across vehicles that took part. I for one would love to hear of any experiences. I think of particular interest to this forum would be any recollections of the Blues and Royals Scorpions/Scimitars involvement, BV202s, beach recovery vehicles, etc. So post-away!!! Phil PS Moderators - move this wherever you think appropriate if I've put it in the wrong place.
  5. Cheers for that Neil. It'd need to be a big strop. Will wait to see if there are alternatives.... if you dont mind. Since you've been so kind as to make a constructive suggestion maybe I'll pop down from Ashford for one of your next tunnel adventures :n00b: Phil
  6. Mr Marian's not exactly got a bad job, eh?!! Have just read the list of vehicles on the website, and my keyboard is now damp with dribble...
  7. Hi all, I support everything that Snapper says about you guys who have kicked this idea off - great idea, so well done and thanks for letting us be involved. As for the details : I agree with Snapper that the arena probably isnt worth pursuing. As for the landing area... I recall last year they had 2 choppers and left them on site overnight. So if we plan to use the landing area in Americas we will need to be sure that a) they aint in the way and b) that all the vehicles we want in shot can fit in! If the location used is the same as 2005 and earlier, the only background 'obstacle' is the tank driving/offroad course so its promising that we might get some decent uncluttered pics. As a fallback I still reckon the overflow carpark is as probably good as anywhere else. As for timings - unlike Snapper  I am not doing offical show photography for the organisers this year  so I can turn up pretty much any time ;-) ... if we can get something together as soon after 5pm as possible we'll have some time to play with... and I still think a weekday might be better than the weekend, before it becomes manically busy. How would this suit you guys... ??? Finally - ladders and stuff. I dont mind going up fairly high as long as its safe, eg basket, cherry picker, etc. Did an offshore transfer on the outside of a basket once and nothing could scare the hell out of me more than that did... (that is not a challenge, by the way). The crazy thing was they put the luggage/gear INSIDE the basket and we hung of the outside... offshore tiger, me!!! Anyway, Rex wouldn't be too impressive if one of us fell and broke our neck. Phil
  8. I would tend to agree - if it's passed out of service then it's historic. As to the 'active service' rather than 'in the stores' aspect, this relates to your perception of the vehicles 'involvement' in history. Obviously a battle worn example carries more history than one that resided in stores, even though if you saw them both running the active service vehicle may only be say 50% of the original vehicle that saw combat, compared to the stores example being maybe 90% original or better. But that's another debate...
  9. Simon, If no-one on here can help, have you tried any of the re-enactor forums? You didnt say what era, but presume WW2 so try wwiireenacting.co.uk for a start... you could also try Andy Colborn through the SBG website http://www.sbg1.mistral.co.uk/ whos always a helpful bloke... Hope I wont get told off for directing someone to another forum... :-D Phil
  10. Clive, If interested, PM me the details and I'll send you (or someone else in the group) a CD of the pix taken at Legends last year. Phil

    VW ILTIS

Here we go - Am now waiting for the inaurguration of the Iltis Appreciation Society, Essex Branch. Btw should we say Iltis, or Ilitis's, or Iltises...?
  12. Clive, Who's the guy in the middle of the trio? He might like of know one of my mugshots from a Duxford show last year is on the cover of the latest edition of Armourer mag. He looks the biz... in fact you all did. Can try to do some more pix this year if you're going again. Actually I thought you guys were a section of FAAA as they were there in force, but obviously I was wrong... whoops! Sent Lee a batch of photos last year, so not sure if they got thru to you. Cover shot at http://www.armourer.co.uk/ Phil
  13. Hi all, I have been asked if I can put together some decent pix for some new books in the pipeline from Ian Allen. I'll no doubt be sticking new posts up from time to time about it as there are a number of irons in the fire, the first of which is Military Harleys - preferably WW2 but post-war also. This first book is fairly well progressed already, and they are looking to get a few colour pix to finish it off. So if you've got a Harley and dont mind me taking a few snaps - with and without you in it! :-D - then please get in touch. I'll of course sort out CDs of the pix, and I've been promised there'll be a few copies of the book to pass about. Like Snapper and the CMV pinkie request, I'm based down south and so cant travel the length and breadth of the country to do this (especially as time is relatively short on this first one) but will do my best if anyone is able to help. A heads up for the next books - Land Rovers, WW2 armoured cars, Red Ball GMCs and WW2 german softskins and halftracks are planned. Again if anyone can help out it would be great. Bit more time for these, so can try to get together at Beltring, etc. I've contributed to a book once before using mostly show pix, which was all very nice but this seems like a good opportunity to do a good job - for everyones benefit. PM me or stick a post on here if you can help, or by all means point me in the right direction to someone who can! Thanks and my fingers are crossed for some positive respose... :thankyou: Cheers, Phil
  14. Cheers for that Berni, If no-one else sends me any info I guess I'll be there early! Presume you'd have a 'clubmobile convoy'? Phil
  15. Jack, Yeah.... thanks for asking ! Bit of a mixture of pix at my own site http://www.depthoffieldimages.co.uk . Loads of (good and not so good  ) MV pix from last years Beltring to be found on the War and Peace website in the 2006 gallery (funnily enough those tagged 'Phil' )... if you have the stamina. Also lots on other sites eg Military Odyssey, 2nd guards, Rolling Thunder/AIPS, Armchair General, etc... all worth a look irrespective of any work of mine being there! I have another interesting photo project which I'll post about soon, and hopefully a few HMVF members might like to get involved - am currently scoping out the details... Phil
  16. Brilliant - really well done. Just shows, even if a building/location looks old you still cant imagine what events actually took place in/around it... that hospital shot is amazing. Phil
  17. Hi all, Was gonna put this in the W&P convoys topic, but probably best if its on its own. I've told Rex I'll be available in the fortnight leading up to the show with a view to TRY to photograph any vehicles or convoys en route to Beltring. Its a side of the event that isnt normally covered, and I've often wondered how some of the vehicles I've seen got there! Since I'm based in Ashford, if I get enough warning I can dangle myself off an M20 bridge and take a few shots, or get down to Dover to see ferry arrivals. So, if anyone is planning to head up the M20 through Ashford, or knows of someone bringing vehicles in through Dover (and especially any convoys), then post here or PM me, and we'll try to get you up on the W&P website photo gallery before you get to the Hop Farm (well, maybe not)! I'd also try to cover any large convoys heading down from London. My contact details should go up on the W&P website under convoys at some point soon. Oh, I do love planning for Beltring with almost 6 months still to go...! Phil
  18. Anyone planning to head up from Kent? PM me if so.
  19. Hi all, Heres a couple of multimap links which might help... ignore the red circle as thats over Sellindge village - see Johns earlier directions for Swan Lane. http://www.multimap.com/map/browse.cgi?client=public&X=610000.297070335&Y=140000.844345864&width=700&height=400&gride=609669.297070335&gridn=138651.844345864&srec=0&coordsys=gb&db=freegaz&addr1=&addr2=&addr3=&pc=&advanced=&local=&localinfosel=&kw=&inmap=&table=&ovtype=&keepicon=true&zm=1&scale=100000 http://www.multimap.com/map/browse.cgi?client=public&X=610000.297070335&Y=140000.844345864&width=700&height=400&gride=609669.297070335&gridn=138651.844345864&srec=0&coordsys=gb&db=freegaz&addr1=&addr2=&addr3=&pc=&advanced=&local=&localinfosel=&kw=&inmap=&table=&ovtype=&keepicon=true&zm=1&scale=50000 Drop me an email if any probs - I'm an Ashfordian so might be able to help, altho' I dont think I'll be around at the weekend due to family commitments. Theres also another event at Woodchurch west of Ashford on Sunday - airshow and vehicle rally - just in case you fancy a change. http://www.woodchurchwardbirds.com (although the site seems to be down at the moment). Btw if anyone is coming down my way anytime and fancies some pix done of their vehicle just drop me a line and I can try to meet you somewhere - Pat Ware at CMV is always bugging me and the other contributors for decent pix, and its always nice to see your pride and joy in print! At events like Beltring theres so much going on its really difficult to do something 'special', tape everywhere, etc, and I know some good local spots where we could do some great pix. You'd get a copy of them all of course. Have a good weeekend wherever you go! Zoomer (Phil Royal)
  20. Paul - Did you look on the W&P website gallery?? We were snapping away at anything that moved and so would imagine you would have got shot by one of the photo team!!
  21. Yeah - email IMPS and ask to be put in touch with Andy who wears a kilt. You're get a reply from Andy Mitchell, so then say 'No not you, I want the young Andy who wears a kilt'.
  22. I thought it was a BTR40 - but then I only take picures and normally havent a clue of what!!
  23. Hi Cara, I don't know if we are at liberty to say. Snapper - can we tell 'em? How about a clue... Zoomer was in the landy with you, was definitiely not tall and thin, and almost castrated himself climbing into the front seat, while Snapper was in the other landy wearing sexy shorts... any help? Zoomer
  24. Hi all, Love the mono pics on the website! At the risk of exposing (!) my inability to take good photos, the show pics by myself and Snapper are up on the war and peace website gallery. Sadly there's a few duffers got thru the editors net, but it was a tiring week so we'll let him off (until we see him next). Cara - I assume you recall being the back of Andys Landrover with me for the Red Ball Express - what an experience - hope you enjoyed it too! For some reason our pics of the Express dont seem to be on line yet but both John and myself got some good'uns so they'll turn up... sometime... Zoomer (Phil) PS The clubmobile tea was classic. Shame I couldnt be around for one of the film showings but the photo team were run off our feet... hope you had good turnouts.
  25. Yeah, I did write a piece for CMV about almost a year ago about taking pix of MVs, which obviously went down well as I got no feedback whatsoever! But as I dont seem to have the luck of happening across a Dodge turned into a Calvados distillery I have to just stick to what I know, ie the bits on me camera. As for my equipment - nice of you to compliment me Snapper, but envy is not a nice character trait. Anyway, mine may be bigger than yours, but yours is more shiny. That is, until day one in the dust... Fingers crossed for a good Beltring so we can all get some practice in!!!
