  1. Could I fit it on my MW ? :cool2: its been sat in my shes for years so would be nice to give it a good home so to say :-D
  2. Heres the pics of the rear lamp for you John. Under the lens on the bracket is stamped LWD MT4 what'da reckon ?
  3. Yes sorry got your message will give him a bell.
  4. Did 5 miles on the bike today as a test run and clutch seems ok I removed a plate in the end because the cover still rubbed the inside of the chain case, it does make it a lighter clutch to use but I'll get a good few more miles on it and the gearbox before le belle France in June Thanks for all your advice and help. RR.
  5. Did 5 miles on the bike today and all seems ok with the box, at least it changes gear easier plus there seemed less false neutrals than before thanks for all help and advice. RR.
  6. They look very familiar they look bl**dy good too, Johns done a real good job on them I can't wait till I get mine :cheesy: the bulk heads the next thing on my do do list. keep up the good work
  7. Yaay ! I have a rolling chassis Well on the 1/35th scale one Meanwhile down t'shed and work today on the 1/1 scale is actually easier :nut: Front springs are back on along with the front flexi pipes for the brakes now the front tressle has been removed the front cross member can be sorted next. All the hubs and drums are sorted with the brake shoes adjusted inc the handbrake. Must start looking for some decent 900x16 tyres soon.
  8. Hi all has anyone got a paint code for USMC forest green as a mate wants to paint his jeep in the correct colour. Many thanks RR.
  9. Managed to get some work done on the MW today after sorting the Norton's clutch and gearbox I disassembled the front pair of springs cleaned all the leaves before greasing, reassembly, etch priming and an undercoat.
  10. Well done  where did you find that horn push ? I've part of one but could do with a complete one. I think that's an early type unit you have there later ones had two heads visible on the front. I used 3mm white letraset off epay to restore mine, fiddly job though :nut: plus you will need to spray it when done with a clear laquer to protect the transfers from rubbing. Later type assembly
  11. Yes a bit steep with the postage I'm sure Russells would have one I've just got a pair of N.O.S. top and bottom fixing bolts with nuts and washers for the gearbox at very reasonable cost
  12. Hi Wayno what's this I hear your going into farming ? call by when your passing I'm doing some preventative on the Norton at the mo which means things have slowed a bit on the MW.
  13. Gearbox sorted all ok, just waiting for the kick start pawl and a couple of bolts from Russell motors before it can all start to go back together :-D
  14. Well the gearbox is back together , well almost as the kickstart pawl was showing signs of wear and needs replacing plus I have 1st gear a neutral and three 4th gears :nut: looks like somethings not quite right ! have added that shim in front of the main bearing and it as taken up some of the play will have another go at it tommo.
  15. I aim to shim between the main bearing and the case of the gearbox to reduce the travel out toward the clutch side of the gearbox, before stripping the box I had over 1/8" of movement I think if I shim anywhere else then it will push the shaft further out which may mean the clutch rubbing on the chain case again.
  16. New bearing arrives tomo clutch plates arrived today so clutch is sorted :-D it seem that the missing washer is not unusual so I think I'll shim the end of the shaft to take out most of the slop.
  17. Ok having got the clutch thing under control I noticed a lot of end float in the main driveshaft coming out of the gearbox so.... how to get the gearbox out ? well first of all you have to dismantle the rear end of the bike :undecided: Quick wash off to get rid of lots of crud then get stuck in At first glance things look ok no sign of wear on the bronze thrust washer so what caused the end float ? quick check in the manual and I realise the concave steel washer is missing altogether :-( Does anyone have a spare washer knocking about please ? Also after stripping out all of the gears and shafts the main gear bearing is rough so will need to be replaced, other than that it looks like it hasn't done much work all I need now is to remember how it all goes back together :nut:
  18. Never ever throw anything away !! Having removed the outer chain case to get at the clutch I noticed one of the fixings was missing between front drive sprocket and clutch note oval shaped hole. , on further inspection something seems to be amiss. there is supposed to be a threaded stud that carries that part of the chain case. Roll back a couple of days and knowing that I was going to have a look at the clutch I remembered seeing a box of odds n ends that was left over when we first got the Norton together when I was in my early 20's so a quick trip to my parents and there tucked away in a corner of the garage was the box of bits which I thought may come in handy, So bought them home. So I thought I wonder if by any chance ........... and yes :-D after a good old rummage this afternnon there was the stud and bolt that looked like it would do the job  :rotfl:  Another rummage and a nut was found along with front engine stud that carries the exhaust clamp :-D So there you go Never ever throw anything away ever ! those parts had been waiting the best part of 30yrs to go back on the bike :nut: My only defence in not fitting this stud in the first place is that I found the bike in bits in a couple of tea chests mixed up with othe parts from a Triumph and a BSA and being only 19 yrs old and at the time I did the best I could with limited knowledge and skill  Doh ! looks like I am missing the crankcase breather now am off for another look you never know :cool2:
  19. Have parts on order and am lucky to have the large A4 size manual that contains some nice exploded views of the gearbox which I am now scanning to take copies with me into the garage before I start to tackle the gearbox :cool2:
  20. Thanks for the info very usefull will take a look at the gearbox over the next couple of days and see what state its in  hopefully bronze thrust washer will help but will also check for other wear and tear.
  21. Checked end float on main shaft and there does seem to be a lot of movement so this could turn into a lot of work :-( but if it needs to be done then so be it better now in the workshop than on the side of the road in France  how difficult is it to rebuild the gearbox ? :nut: Ok the plot thickens as I now think that the clutch fitted to my 16H is not the original type but a later one.
  22. There's nothing worse than having to pull on your shaft when your clutch is rubbing so they say :wow: am going to speak to Russel motors tomo and order up some parts as you say some investigation needed.
  23. At last I've had 5 mins to make this - Thanks for the info :-D
  24. HI All Thought that I would have a look at the clutch on the Norton, I've not been happy with for a while so before Normandy looms on the horizon I though it a good idea to sort it. On removing the chain cover the first thing I noticed was this - Wear to the inside of the chain cover ! wear to the clutch spring screws On removing the clutch basket I noticed the clutch plates almost proud of the basket looks like new friction plates were put in when the clutch was "professionally" rebuilt !!! friction plates look ok but will replace them along with the steel plates that aren't too good. Pulled the clutch thrust pin and found this - Is this correct ? looks like someone has added it because of the thicker friction plates hence the wear marks on chain case, also circlip missing along with outer band. How many plates should there be ? at the mo there are five clutch and five steel plates, can I fit four plates intead and do away with the add on piece of clutch rod ? Help please as the rivet hasn't worked on a Norton clutch before  Thanks RR.
