1. I assume that you are refering to the faulty pistons issue??.... when inferior materials were supplied for their mnufacture.
2. Hi, welcome in from the deep south, photographs please, one is worth a thousand words.
3. The second photograph with the four RAF guys was taken 1944 / 45 North Africa, the guy third from left was my Uncle Jack, my younger sister and myself had lost our parents by the time that he returned home, he took on the role of "Father" to my sister and myself, at first he was a hard task master. I suppose that that was a direct result of what he had endured in North Africa. However I learned to love and respect the man, he has gone now, and I do miss him. The first photograph is of the "Graveyard". Thats where people going on demob would plant a "Grave Stone". Some would be expressing the sheer joy of their return to civillian life, while others would be rather funny, we all looked forward to planting our own one day, but strangely, I lost the desire to do so when the time arrived. I knew that I was going to miss all of my buddies, so it kind of put a damper on that idea. The third photograph illustrates the "Windmill" Cafe that was situated on the autobahn, and we all frequented the place regularly when out on the autobahn. The final photograph shows us on exer
4. Four of us in Amsterdam, Holland. 1957. I am on the right. A winter scene of the lorry park in front of the tank workshops, Hamm, Germany, 1957 / 58.
5. These have aged, litterally, they were taken 58 years ago when I was in Germany. The three in the photograph (me on the right) was taken at the foot of the Monnhe Dam. The two wrecked trucks are the handy work of two of my friends (I still meet with them now, all these years on) The Leyland Hippo is myself just loaded some scrapped items for disposal. The horse riding, me on the right, out with a German group, the man drinking schnapps was our Adjutant........... great times.
6. Patton was pulling his hair out, because he lost so many trucks to cover this problem (Faulty Pistons)
7. It seems that sub-standard materials were supplied, and I do believe that the same sub-standard materials filtered through to the motorcycle industry also.... it all resulted in excessive cylinder wear and burning of oil. (Pistons and rings)
8. I was talking with a gentleman yesterday while showing our vehicles at Manchester Airport. He told me that he was researching Austin K5s and in particular, the major piston failure that they suffered after the D.Day landings. I told him that I was quite sure that the vehicles involved were Bedford trucks. I am afraid that he was absolutely correct the vehicles involved were indeed Austin K5s, so if he should read this, then please accept my apologies.
9. I believe that its overcharging, and needs the regulator setting.
10. welcome in............. many happy returns of the day.
11. I wont tell anyone if you dont !!!
12. Well done, good luck with the restoration of the M20, I am hoping to be in Normandy 2014 with my Royal Enfield WD. CO........ I have other vehicles, but the bikes are great fun to ride.
13. I see lots of tow ropes that have pulled the knotts so tight that they cant be undone, this is how I have always fastened my tow ropes. Three loose loops and then a slip knot, done the same at both ends, undoes very easily, just make sure that the slip knott is secure. Its never failed for me, even after many miles of towing, The three loops prevent the slip knott from pulling tight.
14. They tax everything else, so you might as well tax our brains............ welcome to the friendly forum.
15. Buy a Dodge........ I did, they are bullet proof, well almost.
16. I am drooling all over my keyboard............ fabulous motors.
17. Pics as promised, I made this breaker from scrap materials, apart from the sledgehammer head, in a couple of hours at work (It was my business, now our sons) it works very well and any one with a midicum of welding ability can make one.
18. My life has been so enriched by my involvement with this hobby that I could never contemplate leaving such a great bunch of people, long may it continue.
19. During my service in mid 1950s (Germany, REME Armd Wksps) when ever we went on schemes I was the only motorcycle rider in the workshops. I did convoy control, both for our own workshops and some times seconded to to HQ Bunde, 6 Armd Division. The M20 that I am sitting on now belongs to our son, but when I restored it, I did the markings representing my old workshops. I used to ride M20s or Matchless G3Ls......... nice old bikes, I enjoyed it then, and I still enjoy it now. I still have 3 motorcycles, 2 Royal Enfields and a Harley Davidson WLC, so I still get the occasional ride.
20. If I cant take it with me.......... I`m not going, and thats final.
21. I made my own, it works fine, I will try to remember to photograph it tomorrow and post a picture. I made it when I had to change all of the tyres on my GMC.......... 11 wheels.
