Hi, the Austin K2Y ambulance markings change quite a bit during the war. there are records at Kew. If you do not have any pictures it a bit hard, do not rely on the instructions given by the model supplier as to paint or year. if you are doing an Austin K2Y model, these ambulances change on nearly a yearly basis's a 1940 austin is quite a bit different form a 1945 Austin or an Army rebuilt one, Rob van meel (www.robvanmee.nl) books has a reprint of Vehicle Marking in the Middle East. 24th March 1944, and a few othere books. Just a mix of pictures next British, Australian , New Zealand. off to war c1940 Dunkirk note the gas patch on the bonnet. early Austin K2 North Africa Caunter scheme ( no red cross on rear body only the small Red cross plate as on the front) Alamein Italy well i could go on message me if you want more pics. regs Rupert

hi My limited knowledge, (81" Land Rover) on the B40 engine was Rolls Royce were black, rocker covers were marked UNF for the Austin engine, Rolls Royce were plain and the threads were BSF, I have seen a few black painted engines with plain rocker covers in champs in WA reg Rupert

Hi I am looking at the propeller shafts and they are different, at each end, the book shows them to be the same was there a production change, or are these part chev. or othere type? that is they should be had splicer type at each end, and not have the extra long bit. as below

Hi I think maybe a Bedford Bedford MW for the earlier pictures.

well i am looking for a rad, but might have to go for a made up one, the radiator could be Bedford although its very similar to the Humber LRC mark II, rad (P.72235),has that Bedford type top cap,(P.72688) the Humber rad being P.47611, and cap P.47687 the I C A humber there is a tube on it, I think it was in one other film after ICA. i check the link.

there should be a very original one in New South Wales, that came from Western Australia a few years ago. and one from Singapore in New Zealand. there should be more in aussie but, i only know of two. the one I have will need some work, my local gym at home. regs Rupert

Hi the windscreen changed to the rounded type on later models, the one in the picture top, this info would indicate that it had been rebuilt. 90 YG 98 , M4379881, ch.no. 8350254, contract V.3829, FAR.CR 31/12/56, picture Bottom is M4379727, Ch.no. 8350100, contract V.3829. of c1941 buy chance had this info, Does look like Korea though. FAR would be the key. maybe, Far Asia Region? there where pullman conversions but I do not know much about them. regs Rupert

Hi I notice the MoS plate had a "civilian" number, From what I have come across this is not unusual for Government Vehicle's, I doubt the RLC will be able help with that ERM, they do a chassis no. search the Kirkhead trust maybe able to help.or BBC. best i can do is London JAN 47-AUG 47 So likely still with the Military/ Govt dept. Hi I am so pleased to have found this post, Some good work done here. I have Just bought a Humber which all the woodwork has been replaced at some point (badly), and has now rotted away, most of the bulkhead was also cut around, So apart for a couple of front floor boards, thats all the woodwork. I cannot rely on any of the wood, as it dose not fit well, list is too long. cab floor and drivers seat wood still there the rest of the wood is replacement, looks really good in this pic. the rear wheel wells are 6' lower and 6' further out(cut down. I basically need sizes for everything and a truck load of parts, A radiator as well as I think it has the humber LRC one fitted. regs Rupert

Hi just scrolled this, i have being trying to find a unit no/sign. I found the diagonal went \ or / for a headquarters unit also the RAF used the / please court me if Ian wrong I am still trying to decode this one, but I think it has been over written with the unit serial no. which I am also still trying to trace. numbers and flash are white, the 7 is certain back ground is a worry.

just an up date here the wreak has now being restored, these Ambulances (about 72) served with the 1AACC Queensland ,2AACC NSW, 3AACC Victoria, some maybe with the 4AACC South Australia. the ones in the AWM book were 2AACC NSW, and carried both Australian Army numbers and their original British Army number, the remaining Austin Ambulances carried the British WD no.(only) with or without the 'A' prefix, and served in the 1,2,3,4, AACC except for 2 in the 3AACC being registered as. AUSTIN 1 & AUSTIN 2

Hi Nice find, later type body from chassis no. 63965 on wards, the sheet metal is an add on post war or when it became a shed. there should be a contract plate above the door (if you are lucky), I have been told the body no. is 12710 , so early contract S.3165, or unknown as there is a grey area before this contract and the end of contract S.2797. regs Rupert

hi looks a good kit,I did comment on the Airfix site about the many errors, with the kit, mainly on the grounds that Austin K2y ambulances can be Identified by year,as the vehicle had lots of changes over the wartime period, and the kit was more represenative of a wartime rebuilt vehicle or post war rebuild, As for the surgested desert paint scheme that was way out. Red cross's on the rear doors appear after c1942(not painted on in the factory) from single red cross to duel red cross's on D-Day (about) lots of variation in size and shape, its best to find a wartime picture and keep with that, as local units did thier own thing. 30 corps picture, regs Rupert

hi Snowy Later wartime Ambulances in the M.E. had the bridge plate changed to 5 tons,as they carried a lot more stuff.Circa 1943 so after Tobruk, these c1941 (contract A.1445) model Austin K2Y ambulances, roundels not used after 1944, these ambulance's have camonetting supports fitted that came in c1943.and larger cross. It the film there are quite a lot of errors, the chassis is and Austin Chassis, its only the axles and transfer box that are are from a chevrolet (Blitz)C8A/X, see the hyde park pics above.

Hi I am trying to make some sand matts but there appear to be diffrent types. the LRDG pictures show a flexible matt. this barn find had rope inserts (bad pic ) as I could see the rope ends. AWM pockets with rope inserts I have made a set but i fitted 2 1/2" X 1/2" ply strips in they look great, but wrong, the pocket size in the LRDG pics appear to be about 3" wide X 17", there is rope in them,but with large gaps hence my error. first type (i found not by manufacture) second type these have rope inserts easy type used bamboo, the ones in ICA are a bit sort on length as i calculate they should be wheel base plus two wheel diameters or more, they also have the canes protruding, and are wired in, I think this was to produce a better effect for when they were ejected from under the wheels, i.e. sand everywhere. regs Rupert

hi as a help I found soidier of fortune usful for those extra bits of kit, that jack handel /shaft, 2H 338 jacks not the right one. 3/4" square drive x 42 ", 1/2" dia for Terry Clips. So keeping with the austin,does anyone know where the spare front and rear springs where kept on an Austin Ambulance, when in convoy , ME/overseas, but could be anywhere?

Hi All I noted that ERM plate below in standard formate the top line being the ERM. which I have found, 11 AA 11 number letter number, except when its not, But still using the same plate ex, JXX 953, KYW 807, etc So be careful on what you rub off. Civilian formate does not mean Civilian, but Government. regs Rupert
