  1. I will have a closer look Richard, nothing really obvious I noticed as I was working on it but you never know. I did wonder about it maybe being off a trailer. Duncan
  2. Cheers Richard, that will do enough for me! Duncan
  3. Probably well known to everyone but myself, but I've just retreived a tyre off this rim which definitely isnt off my Bedford. 16" split wheel, 5 stud fixing. Tyre is marked 'for British inch and a half rims only' So there is half a start!
  4. An MW I saw previously rotting in a scrapyard (I posted a link to pics somewhere, in the pre-crash days) I remember had the spare in the back and so I assumed this was standard. The man wasnt too happy with me climbing all over it and at the time I thought nothing of the fixing arrangement. I suppose I am going to have to make the trek back and view it again . Thanks for the input guys. So what do other owners do if they dont have 'run flats' I wonder. This should be in the 'stupid question' section I know, but how are run flats identified?
  5. Ok, seems no-ne has a pic, anyone care to describe their setup for stopping the spare from floating around? Is it just a bolt through the front woodwork or should there be something more substantial as per on a Dodge step?
  6. Anyone got a pic they can post showing the mounting for the spare wheel in a GS body? Nothing in my (rebuilt) body for holding it. Was it just a bolt through the woodwork or should it be something more substantial? Cheers
  7. OK, that seems to be it! It is just that with some of the journeys I have done recently I have had to start from scratch on an uphill incline (not necessarily 'a hill', but going up). I have got up to third but then had the grating when trying for top. The incline would have been taken in top no problem if I'd had 'a run' at it, which made me think it was a problem which had developed. You assume the situation correct, it grates but will not engage. I had not heard of this phenomenia before but if it is par for the course then fine, glad to know about it. Saves stripping the box!! Thanks for that Richard. Duncan
  8. I'm finding if I am going uphill (any kind of incline) then it can be almost impossible to get in to top from third gear. It is almost as if the driver train being under pressure is stopping selection due to wear somewhere, and the slowing down of the vehicle as the power is lifted off as a change is tried to be made prevents full/proper movement of some part of the selectors Am I thinking on the right lines here? Once over the top, or on the flat, selection is not a problem. Any suggestions as to which part of the 'system' to inspect first?
  9. Good to see some pics of the event, Rob. That busy I didnt manage many myself. Glad you and the rest of the guys had a good time. Shame more of the public didnt turn out on the Sunday but I reckon the lure of the coast on the first good weekend of the year was too much. Nay matter, we all had a good time eh? Lots of good feedback received locally from those who were there, lots of praise for the quality of the L/H groups. I did try to get some period vehicles there but for one reason or another they didnt materialise. Cant win 'em all! Dunc
  10. quote{Gents, can we settle one thing once and for all? The 1914/18 war was known at the time simply as 'The War'. during the 1920's it came to be reffered to as 'The Great War'. it did not become known as the 'First World War ' till after 1939, simple really before 1939 no one knew there would be another world war. So 'Great War' is the acepted correct title.}quote If I'd been posting this in the 1920's I dont suppose I would have referred to it as WW1 either, but I'm here in 2008. So if there isn't WW1, what is the 'accepted correct title' for the 39/45 conflict? You can't call it WW2 by your reasoning, as there isn't an official WW1.
  11. If anyone 'oop North' is interested in seeing a small scale, but quality, WW1 event they could do worse than going along to the Barnsley Pals Tribute Event being staged on the site of the Pals original training camp at Silkstone, nr Barnsley. Some slight traces of the original camp survive. Unfortunately it is the same weekend as Wings and Wheels at Elvington May 10/11th. All gate proceeds to Ex -Service Charities. £2.50 per head to get in.
  12. OK chaps what is the modern equivalent of C600 in a gearbox? 'Fraid this means nothing to me. (Bedford MW) A manual I have is overwritten H (undecypherable) 90. Maybe this is 'hypoy'? Anybody out there in the know? Is it sae or ep? Ignorance is not always bliss
  13. Are Clements Trading in Holland ? They sometimes have part finished bikes which they describe as 'almost complete'. I look at the pics and smile. Sorry but I dont know the names of any of the other dealers but I will ask around. Do a Google search as Holland is a good source of ex-ww2 HD parts so there must be other companies.
  14. Donkeys years ago as a callow youth I went to Hawker Siddeley at Brough applying for an apprenticeship in something or other. It would be around 1968 I think. Half way through the interview a bloke runs in to the office where I am having a quite good interview with some office man and says 'they're coming' and dashes off. ' Come on with me' the suit says and next minute we are dashing out through a maze of corridors then in to a hanger and next minute we are out on the apron in front of it with probably the whole of the factory staff. 'They're an hour early' he tells me '..er.. what are' says I 'the Vulcans, we make them so we are getting a bit of a show!'. Not many minutes of straining eyes and then suddenly out of the blue over the Humber come low and not so steady four Vulcans in close formation, right across in front of the factory, but then it got better as no sooner were they over us than another four came out of the blue and another and another!!! In total there were 32 aircraft made the pass. I have to say it could have been 16 coming around twice but it didnt seem that way. To be there was to remember. As we went back inside the guy told me that this was the first time ever that so many Vulcans had been in the air in one formation. Maybe it was the only time ever? An hour later as I was waiting on the railway station platform I suddenly heard the boom of engines again, so I legged it up to the top of the pedestrain bridge as one after another from all points of the compass they came back. Criss - crossing over the factory. Tremendous. I heard a rumour once that a film exists of this flight but I've never come across a copy.
  15. Dont know if this has been listed before, apologies if it has. Came across it while searching. http://www.desertrats.org.btinternet.co.uk/artefacts2.htm
  16. I am of the opinion that this picture shows the loading of the same gun. Both pics can be found on the IWM site. I forget what caption went with either of them.
  17. Its good to see that on the Chaplains jeep there appears to be a Thompson in a scabbard(?) just in case the crucifix fails :-D :-D
  18. Isn't this a still from a film? It seems to ring a bell somewhere in the depths, but will happliy concede if I'm wrong.
  19. Anybody else think that the pic of the tippers links up to the left of the scenes down the street? In the pic of the Chaplains jeep there is a GI behind the GMC. You can just see what appears to be the same figure sliced off to the extreme left of the tippers shot. The ruined building also appears to be the same 'pattern'. Agree?
  20. Anyone know if there was a specific practise of painting military vehicles with the white strips on bumpers etc, as was put on civvy vehicles in the blackout? Did it happen? Was it confined to 'non combat' vehicles? When was the practise dropped? Just as a point of interest.
  21. Regarding the Avro v. Boeing, I seem to recall reading somewhere that although the B17 was produced in response to a USAAC competition in 1934, that the Boeng company did actually use/refer to a British Air Ministry specification as a major part of their start point but that this has been forgotten with the passage of time. Regrettably cant find the reference, so I could be wrong given the same passage of time! So maybe we can claim the B-17 as being 'British' as well?
  22. The two Humber forts are very neglected, covered with an incredible layer of seagull s***. the south one is accessible at some low tides, insofar as walking/paddling up to it but its not easy to get up on to it. Must be more than 10 years ago I remember the local tv being allowed on as there was talk(not for the first time) of the northern one being converted in to a hotel/holiday attraction, a bit along the lines of the one in the Solent, but as far as I know it has never come to anything. The amazing thing was that it was a bit of a time capsule as it had cereal packets from the time on the table, rusty bed frames etc still in the rooms. No armament though! IMHO neither the Humber Forts or the Thames ones though match the Dover Turret. Now that is one of the best kept secrets!
  23. Please add me to the list, thanks. As and when, no rush. E-mail in profile as per the rest. Excellent and generous offer. Was given a set of D-Day 60th anniversary maps as a pressie, they will go well with these.
