show report Overlord.
martinsaunders06 replied to rambo1969's topic in The meetings log and photobook
yep totally agree, we took 2 trucks just short of 200 mile round trip from glos down and really enjoyed it. felt like a mv show of years ago and unlike most shows where hi-viz jackets are choking the shows. very safe tho and a well worked arena where drivers were given some credit to be able to drive their vehicles in more than 1st gear.lots of stalls as well!. -
very sad, a another person who seen a different world and who took part in and influenced history.

show report LIVE from the W&P Show 2010
martinsaunders06 replied to Marmite!!'s topic in War & Peace show.
sounds like everyone is having fun but loggy is right it is not good when you turn up mon or tues with one or two vehicles to find large areas roped off, often massive areas with hardly any vehicles in making it very difficult to find a space. A week off work still aint enough. show organisers ought to have more control and stop people being greedy. -
manuals for M62..is the m52 the same.
martinsaunders06 replied to paulob1's topic in American Vehicles
m62 should be petrol and has a different crane (austen western? i think) as opposed to to multifuel and garwood crane(i think) but they are certainly alot different looking/operation. -
yeah you sure dont hang about, will the the axle prop clear the cummins sump or do you run without 6x6?. Seems to be the normal for the engine/power to be the weak link in a lot military trucks and i suppose it makes sense when having numerous drivers who dont own, really care or have to gough up when they break things and also if not overpowered you are less likely to break the transmission/propshafts when loaded and working, although suppose petrol had it over diesel in the war anyway.? what weight is a kitted up WLF?. my 816 is 17-18 ton and the N/A 14 litre cummins was underpowered with the gearing until turboed.
-
yep hats off to you both!, It really does take committment, vision and confidence to crack on with a job like this.Lots of of talk about doing things like this and talk ourselves out of it.I thought i was brave when i turboed my cummins in the 816 wrecker butthis really is a job.Its amazing how the clutch/transmission/engine mate up so well and that gearbox looks almost identical to the later m series casing/bell housing. One question is what sort of rpm"s did the original petrol run compared to the cummins and will it affect ratios/road speeds etc? interesting post. Thankyou.

14th January 1943 RAF Kemble
martinsaunders06 replied to martinsaunders06's topic in This day in history.

The 14th January 1943 was a very sad day for the OAPU unit at RAF kemble in Gloucestershire as at just before noon Halifax B11 W7844 was preparing for take off, she had arrived the previous september and after various modifications was due for a routine test flight prior to delivery overseas. On board were three aircrew, F/LT F.Harrison the C.O. of the despatch flight,F/SGT J.Thomas, and Cpl H.Munson.Looking forward to going for a ride,as many people used to do at the time were five young aircrew,Cpl. W Ashworth,Cpl F Heywood,F/O H Hamilton and A/C"s L.Smith and V.Hadrill. Although F/LT Harrison who at 24 was a very experienced pilot, he was somewhat unfamiliar with the Halifax having just converted onto the type after flying Wellingtons for some time operationally in the mediterranean and then at kemble. After flying for about 15 minutes in the vicinity of the airfield during which it "shot up" a wellington, the halifax chased a OTU Spitfire that happened to be in the area. The pilot of the Spitfire took evasive action ending up in a steep turn to port and the Halifax followed in a very steep left hand turn during which it fell into a spin. The spin was checked at a low height but the aircraft struck the ground in the resultant dive into local woods at oaksey, approx one and a half miles from kemble. an outbreak of fire occurred on impact and the aircraft was totally destroyed killing all 8 on board. It was a harrowing time for all at kemble as at the time no one knew exactly who was onboard and due to the fire identification was was difficult. One lucky man was that day was Cpl K.Harman who was due to go along as flight engineer but 2 of his colleagues needed to get more flying hours in to qualify for their extra one and sixpence aday flying pay, so they asked him to give up his place which he did. F/O Pardoe of the accident investigation branch at gloucester inspected the crash site.Their enquiry concluded that the accident was due to an error of judgement on the part of the pilot resulting in the aircraft stalling and spinning while carrying out unnecessary manoeuvres at an unsuitable height. f/LT Harrison was buried with full honours in cirencester at 2pm on the 19th january. From that day on no one "went for a ride" unless necessary!.

nice looking truck. The big singles do make the trucks look good but also mess up the gearing making a already not over powered truck more sluggish and certainly they dont need any more speed for a truck with brakes designed in the 50,s and single line drum brakes at that.

been couple of times altho not for two years as rain stopped play and last year they didnt want static vehicles as this they would take up valuable hard standing car parking or so they said and i was told they would review it for this year but have not heard yes or no yet?.And the rules were you had to be parked up by 7.30am and had to be off site between 6.30 and 8.30pm with your vehicle (if you wanted) to go to your own pre arranged camping site ie not on the airbase and not their problem.martin

hello stuart, for peace of mind if nothing else when i put reo on suspended tow on wrecker i use strops and cross diagonal them and have also been assured they are plenty strong enough, also the strops are more flexible as i can route to an ideal length. martin

M62 A2 Medium Wrecker
martinsaunders06 replied to LoggyDriver's topic in Transporters & Wreckers (All Nations)
?mpg possibly not quite that much altho with figures like these 0ne or two is irrelevant!, would very much depend on type of journeys as lugging that weight with a 7.8 litre multifuel which is basically same capacity motor as a 2.5ton m35 altho uprated it would be working quite hard if stop start journeys. My m35 on a good run will do 12/13 mpg if driven sensibly but 8 or 9 if hammered about. The cummins wrecker prob does about 4-6 mpg all the time regardless of load and altho the cummins is original fitment the gearing dont really suit that motor as the transmission was designed for the earlier multifuel trucks which has a few more revs to play with. I only use diesel if possible as i beleive the multifuel aint designed to run on crap fuel all the time, the military used it as a emergency option not a everyday thing. The diesel is the lubricant and altho parts of the fuel pump are crank pressure lubed the distributing head and injectors arent and if if lots of petrol is used then it will hammer out injector seats and wear other moving parts over time.martin -
M62 A2 Medium Wrecker
martinsaunders06 replied to LoggyDriver's topic in Transporters & Wreckers (All Nations)
Id say it looks a tidy truck and having the multifuel aint no bad thing, certainly be less chance of running probs, easier on fuel? and easier to maintain the engine. The only thing you have to remember with the wreckers are they are heavy for what power they got as this truck will be 15/16 tons empty and with 200hp and less you have to" drive " them unlike a m35 which is like driving a van around. My 816 weighs 17ton+ kitted up and even with 14 litre cummins its only ok. Originality shouldnt be a prob as there aint no original pre 1960 m35,s around as these would of been petrols and then came the non turbo multifuel and finally the turbo multifuel that we know was not about until the late 60,s and with the most common m35 " 1C" whistler engine being intoduced to meet 1970/71 US emmission levels according to my data plate. martin. -
M62 A2 Medium Wrecker
martinsaunders06 replied to LoggyDriver's topic in Transporters & Wreckers (All Nations)
yeah i totally agree jimmy, you can only judge on personal experinces. i must admit they had or have access to some great kit which within the uk there is definately a lacking of a good "M" series parts supplier. I deal with a guy in belgium called Rudi Goossens and he is honest, realistic prices and does what he says and its amazing the postage from belgium to the uk is cheap even with the euro and makes are postage costs within the uk look a rip off. martin -
M62 A2 Medium Wrecker
martinsaunders06 replied to LoggyDriver's topic in Transporters & Wreckers (All Nations)
yeah that been advertised for abit now,An original M62 should have a 10 litre petrol engine altho its certainly got the M62 style crane etc as the M54(next model) was multifuel and had a totally different looking crane etc. Its prob a selection of various bits .And its definately Rod of marltrax fame.I had M series for last 9 years and had dealings with marltrax many years ago and as with lots of people had some poor experiences.Truck does look tidy tho. martin -
i once followed a MJ to beltring 140 miles in the REO and it was painful,we were down to 15 mph most hills. I get spoilt with the REO as with the pump tweaked they"re good. But my M816 wrecker with its 14 liter will do do 50mph easily on the flat but see a hill and you get plenty of excercise changing down and then will go anywhere in low box.We need to remember these trucks were designed some time ago and mainly expected to spend alot of time offroad going slow and not sure what an average convoy speed would be but prob not 40mph. Ive also read that most military vehicles/engine were never over powered deliberately so to protect the driveline/suspension etc from the average driver, better to wear an engine out than break things in the field. martin

Why do you wear military uniforms?
martinsaunders06 replied to robin craig's topic in Clothing/uniforms
I think if it compliments a vehicle or display then its great but there are alot of people who have a real EGO/ IMAGE thing with it!. not sure if they think they look cool or tough but they definately love it. Take for example war and peace show as with many other shows, once the public has left and the days re enactment has finnished they still end up in the beer tent dancing to the "village people" or "bee-gees" dressed right up and that has no relevence to living history or vehicle displaying but is just an image thing! martin -
yeah got mine and it does look really tacky, much better without the added fog or a peroid photo would of been great. martin

show report Kemble MVT 2009
martinsaunders06 replied to AndyFowler's topic in The meetings log and photobook
yeah the Hunter was real good, i was lucky enough to go for 40 mins ride in that black hunter last october, pretty awesome as got to fly it and flew my own loop the loop along with some level stuff thro breacon mountains..As for kemble would imagine be the last one altho think the show will have just about paid for itself. Should of known things wouldnt go well as Rolling thunder started the arena each day with their customary 30 mins late start which they have perfected brilliantly at every show they do! which guarrantees the watching public wander off bored.. thanks martin -
show report Kemble MVT 2009
martinsaunders06 replied to AndyFowler's topic in The meetings log and photobook
two of the biggest probs at kemble were that out of the 300 vehicles booked in literally halve never turned up! and then on sunday quite a few of the ones that did come got their coats damp and packed up leaving the paying public watching vehicles drive out. Also the amount of people prepared to go around the arena was very poor, over the last few years many military shows are turning into military camping shows(like a green version of the caravan club). I can remember a time when owners que"d for ages to get into a arena and were proud to show off their vehicle, you go to steam rally and every tractor enters the arena and you go to a military show and a handfull go round!, luckilly the SAS/DESERT landrovers put on a excellent display as usual and great evening entertainment sat and sunday
