  1. Thanks Tyler, It makes you think, if it wasn't for these HERO'S,- and I make no excuses for calling them ALL by that title, although, those I know, that served, would be highly embarased, by the term,- where would these so-called programe directors be. Seems like it's all to easy,- and cheap, to fill the evenings viewing with so called 'reality tv',.........although, whats 'reality', about a group of so-called "celeb's", who wou;ld'nt know...............No, not going there, but I guess you get my drift; Matt, got into Wilfred Owen, while at school, Anthem for Doomed Youth, and never lost a liking of it since, as for favorites,.........as you say, Strange Meeting, captures reality in its haunting lines; as do, The Next War and At a Calvary Near the Ancre. Have you read any of Siegfried Sassoon ? Memory. When I was young,my heart and head were light, And I was gay and feckless as a colt Out in the fields, with morning in the may, Wind on the grass, wings in the orchard bloom. O thrilling sweet, my joy, when life was free And all the paths led on from hawthorn - time Across the carolling meadows into june. But now my heart is heavy - laden. I sit Burning my dreams away beside the fire: For death has made me wise and bitter and strong; And I am rich in all that I have lost. O starshine on the fields of long - ago, Bring me the darkness and the nightingale; Dim wealds of vanished summer, peace of home, And Silence; and the faces of my Friends. Siegfried Sassoon, written 1/2/1918. " At the going down of the sun, We WILL remember them........" Andy
  2. Cor, those are three V.Interesting sites; Only went on, for a quick look,............................ Paul, the airport site, is that shoreham ? Gaping Gill,..........not thats one great trip ! used to be involved in assisting with caving parties, and we'd exit 'up', at that point, when the lift was running;-only a couple of times a year, if memory serves me right. ---Woe betide you, if you didn't hand in your disc;.............lots of unhappt cavers, at the end of the day !!!!!! Graves

Well Done, Matt. Must admit, I know there are a couple of wartime graves, one german, in local grave yard, but not thought about the maintenance issue; Must go see........... That sounds like a good, positive idea Jack; Might be worth getting the British Legion involved, or at least contacting them. Andy
  4. Why, Oh Why, couldn't 'The Last Tommy', not have been screened tonight. (11/11) Looking at the prog listings, (on 'normal' bbc/ivt, any way) you'd be excused from realising that IT IS Rememberance Day. There was a (very) short clip on bbc news, regarding the oldest surviving airman, (who flew recon for the battle of Jutland !!) being honoured in recognition of his services, and that of this non surviving comrades, in france. Apart from that, NOTHING. -So, from myself, honouring those who have given their time and blood, so's I can express myself freely, IN HONOUR OF THE FALLEN. WHY DO YOU STILL MARCH ? Why do you still march, Old Man with medals on your chest, Why do you still grieve, Old Man for those you laid to rest. Why do your eyes still gleam, Old Man when you hear those bugles blow, Tell me, why you cry, Old man about those days so long ago. I'll tell you why I march, young man with medals on my chest, I'll tell you why I grieve, young man for those I laid to rest. Through misty fields of gossamer silk come visions of distant times when the boys of such a tender age lost lives,...and mothers pined. We buried them in blanket shrouds their young flesh scorched and blackened A communal grave, newly gouged in bloodstained gorse and bracken. --- And you ask me why I march, young man ? I march to remind you all, But for those apple blossom youths, You'd never have known freedom, at all. written by Bill Ridley Lest We Forget. Andy
  5. Seems to me, Jack, those rules are both comprehensive, and sensible. I for one, appriceate the existance of your forum, and thank both yourself and the other guy's 'n' gal's who regularly input info of interest. Good luck with the continued growth of HMVF. Andy

Must admit to having a pile of books to read,..they are something like bus's,.........look for reasonable priced/free books and not much about, then all of a sudden.................. 'It never snows in september', Robert Kershaw. about Market Garden from the german side. Commando Dispatch Rider, Raymond Mitchell, a vet who served with 41 Royal Marines through NW europe, as well as Sicily, as a DR. 'Go To It', Peter Harclerode, the illustrated history of 6th Airborne Div. + a few others; Is it just me, or does anyone else find collecting good readable books catching ?? Have just finished reading My Moving Tent, diary of a Desert Rat; by A.A.Nicol. Well worth the read, Just starting on The Epic Of Dunkirk, by E. Keble Chatterton, this looks to be interesting as it was published in '41. Not bad from a 10p basket in a local charity shop. Happy reading to you all. Andy
  7. Hey, Paul. Is the sand/camo pig that was at newhaven fort, when Stuart had his run there, yours. ? Andy
  8. Now thats a good idea,       I'd second that. Jack,.got your ears on, :?: I'm sure,we'd all be prepared to spend a few beer vouchers on something that could/would 'break the ice', at any events visited. Great thought, Karoshi. Andy
  9. Well, how about it; ? How many times have we all stumbled over a cracking site, and, maybe, not had the means to share the discovery ?? Just an idea. Andy I'll start with a few found, recently. http://www.geocities.com/gpmatthews http://www.military.cz/panzer (turn the volume up/down, dependent on tastes !!) http://www.armourinfocus.co.uk http://www.lrdg.org http://mailer.fsu.edu/~akirk/tanks http://pbase.com/Kees_s/root Club wheels contains some interesting photo's,..........but then, have a quick look through the other albums,...there's a few 'gems', within  Looking forward to seeing any comments, etc
  10. Interesting site,...........Big Boys Toys. Andy
  11. ----thats what I mean,----small world   Andy
  12. Ashley, yes, thats the one;...................must have walked past you, a few times. Its a small world in military vehicle/re-enacting circles. Andy
  13. Daren, Certainly looks to be a challenge, are you jersey based, or do you need to ferry it back ? Regarding identifying modle type, it may be worth,if poss, borrowing the following, from your local friendly libary, if held in stock; (cheaper than buying on spec !) Alvis Saracen Family, by Bill Munro. In National Service, by Pat Ware,-( of Classic Military Vehicle mag) Some where, I'm sure I've got some gumf on the 6 wheel Alvis's, so will have a root about; -(you know what its like, when looking for something specific,...........it hides !) Good luck,.............it does look like you'll need it  Andy
  14. Sabre Sales, Castle Road, Southsea. 023 92833394. Sorry, Commander. Andy
  15. Ashley, Expensive Ice cream, from what I've been told................. It will be a shame, if the new facilities, do turn Bovi, into a theme type park, catering to those with no real interest,- or causing a sense of displacement, ie, the removal, of the very real reason that those with a passion, go there for , Tanks on plinths, indeed !! I have got along to a few of the evening lecture's in the past, the one's hosted by David Fletcher are (to me,) always interesting. Only prob's with then, they are held on a thurs evening, and its a good 120 (ish) mile journey each way. Oh well, who needs to sleep, anyways........... I was down there, the weekend before their do, and an MVT group were camping there, then. Andy
  16. Well, to give you a clue, Jack, and as I said, it was a while ago now, it goes out on a sunday morning. (silly time),..................oh, and its on BBC1, unless sport/hamsters f65t8ing type events are on, then normally moves to BBC2. To my mind, Whistlinwolf, the best time of the day. And yes, the less people about, the better it is........... Oddball, so you've seen those shots of beaches in, spain/portugal/south of france/blackpool (on a hot day). Wall to wall, frying sardines;....Euck ! (no sardines were hurt, whilst the posting of this comment.) Andy
  17. I do aim to please;....................    Andy
  18. Oddball, yes, the idea of baking me c*ds off, in some foreign clime, gives me as much enjoyment, as spending the day locked in a room with myself, after eating Baked Beans;................. :?     Andy,...................... (who loves the sound off water dripping off tree's....................)
  19. Jack, http://www.milweb.net/go/sabre/ is the link, I use. Good luck, and give yourself plenty of time, if planning a visit. Andy
  20. Jack, I reckon the reason, the idea of shooting these wildlife/gardening/lifestyle prog's, abroad, is simple. The producers get a free holiday, - well, if BBC, its paid for by us ! Funny, I've been told that, when asked ' how longs this going to take ?,- in bored tones, whilse charcoal burning;...............when told, ' can we speed it up,- off camara ?,..............the worrying thing about this conversation, was the person asking, host's a countryside programe, and wasn't prepared/couldn't understand why I was sugesting he was going to need to come back next day. The programe, was all about, woodland industry. Good point, Matt. Sorry wildebeast,................is that ok, whistlinwolf ?? Andy
  21. Having just returned from my first,- but not last, visit to Sabre Sales, I'd advise anyone thinking of a visit, to GO............................ I'd heard stories, regarding the webbing room, and put them down to excitable enthusiasm,.blimey, was I ever wrong !!!- webbing by the (room) load.................... WELL, well worth a look, but be warned, you'll be in there for longer than you think, and the traffic wardens are very keen round there ! And no, I've no connection, whats so ever, with them,.although some commision from any sales generated from this posting, would be nice. Anyone else found a good spot for buying kit ?? (I'm after green blanco, sabre have sold out !!) Andy
  22. Matt, Dad say's he was first based at Neptune camp, before moving to Mofar Camp. I think he went back a few years ago. Andy
  23. Well, Ashley, after my last posting under Other Chatter, I'm NOT going to say,' theres always Monkey world, just up the road........'. I take it, you took these during one of the tanks in action days, ? I must admit, I've just become a friend of, (tank museum), so not I get in free, and also have access to their libary;......when I can get down there. Also, with the plans, for the new building, I get the feeling,(wrongly,I hope), we've seen the best days of bovington. I can remember climbing all over AFV's that were outside, - before all this compensation culture came along,- (thr frightening thing is, it wasn't ALL that long ago, really.) Still, well worth a visit though,.......intrestingly enough, in sept, I did bovington and cobbalton, back to back, now that was a contrast; and no, in not going to say, which I enjoyed the most !! Anyone go to the arms through the ages event, hosted there? (bovi) Andy
  24. Tend to agree with you, Matt,...the typical 'war film', screened on the box,I guess, having not been 'under fire', bears little comparrison to the real thing; - and no, I know in a film, there are limitations etc; Getting the facts correct, esp, for the '39-45, period, should not be one of them. (If it was an american production, for an american audience, I could, (just) understand, as the general viewers would,(maybe), not have noticed, esp, as they did not have the (real) need to black-out.) Jack, Like you, I do wonder at the amount of money spent 'putting down', the british people, like the myth that the romans brought civilisation to these isles:.........................what a load of Bu**%h^t. (my opinion) Its like nature prog's, I'm pretty fed up with wildlife on the african plains, and monkeys in the jungle,-for pete's sake, once you've seen a lion kill a wilderbeast, you've seen it. - but, how many programe do you see, on english wildlife and flora 'n' forna ? In relation, not much. Like you, I was involved quite heavily in encouraging a greater awareness and understanding in our fantastic countryside, and woodland crafts, in particular;.......why could, even a small preportion of moneys spent on stuff, away from these shores, not be spent on 'entertaining, and informing, those, who may benefit, and take that new found knowledge, out with then and understand that they are looking at, and how it 'fits', into history. PHEW,...........................Rant over !! No offence meant to any americans, lions or monkeys who log in. Andy
  25. Matt, My Dad was RASC,amphibian training wing, based at Morfa camp, Towyn. (Tywyn, as the welsh, and 'new' maps pronounce it). Along with DUKW's, also trained drivers on Alligators.Buffalo's,Weasels and Terrapins. When he talks about those day's, and its not that often, he certainly re-lives his time there. As an aside, he is gob smacked at the prices DUKW's are fetching now; Andy (if I can get some of his photo's scanned, I'll post.)
