  1. Hi Marco. Have only just picked up on this question; I'll ask my dad, he was involved in the instructing driving/maintainence of DUKW's when RASC during the war. I'll get back when I've got something; Till then, Andy
  2. I've recently got this title from the libary,- reads very well; The author is canadian, and he has written a number of books on the canadian contribution, and actions of WWII; - although, perhaps, suprisingly, not on Operation Jubilee,.....the Dieppe raid. Anyway, from where I've got to, its a good, well informed read. Well worth checking out. "Dip gently your scythe, good reaper now, O'er the fields of the hallowed dead. For young men fought, and young men died, Near the sea, where the earth is red." (Capt. S.E.Higgs. 3rd canadian inf div.) To me, that verse, -taken from frontspiece, of above mentioned book, say's a lot about a beach invasion. Andy
  3. I've just picked this book up from the local libary. Not had a chance to start it yey Andy
  4. Good luck, Jack. As a subscriber, I'll look forward to reading it/them. As has already been said, the 'nuts and bolts', -non cheque book restorations, are, to the majority of people, I guess, all the more interesting, because, its being done, the way, again, I guess, most vehicle owners, have done/are doing, it. Mind you, It could just be that I don't have mega-bucks.............. Andy
  5. So thats a No,............I guess, Clive  Cheers. Andy
  6. AH,.................Thanks for that, Clive. He did say that one was looking quite shot, although there was a spare that seemed ok. I'd mentioned to him that pig one's were occasionaly advertised, and that i'd keep my eyes open, for them;........................no go there ,...then! How much bigger are they?? If he was lucky enough to find a full set of pig rims/tyres,- would they fit, with clearence, etc? Explosive Cord,......... cor, that would make the 'kwik fit, -fitter's', day................. Again, cheers for the info. Andy
  7. Clive, Spoke with my mate earlier, he'd been back to get photo's etc, yersterday, and have another GOOD look around. He says that there is no hole/hatch in rear floor,- But there IS an 8 bolt mounting, spaped like half a lozzenge, with a hole in the top. The canvas has covered flaps(4 of) in the sides. He also managed to persuade it to start,-something that supprised him, and I think he's hoping to get a 'test run',somewhen soon. Oh, and the awaited photo's,............unfortunatly, there arn't any; In his general 'excitment', yesterday, he left the camara on the bonnet, where it sat overnight:.......................exit one camara. Again, cheers. Andy
  8. Clive, cheers for that. No worries about the seller looking here,- if it was a 'huntin an shootin'site, I'd be a little more careful, but good point. I'll relay details to him,(he's a no computer person,- at present), and he can take it from there. Will (try)post pic's,- if he sends them. Thanks for all your help. As Jack has said,in the past, this is a friendly, helpful site; And long may it continue. Cheers, Andy
  9. Cheers for that, Clive. Were the hatch covers canvas, or metal coverings ? Now the big question...................as a drivable vehicle, with, some (visible)rust, very roughly,.........whats the value ?? I'm awaitimg photo's of it, so I cant help there, and its 'op country,' sonewhat for me to go see. (mates use to land rovers, so is use to looking at chassis, and 'metal'. Not wanting to 'put you on the spot', but the seller has, I think an idea of what he thinks its worth, so's I don't want to see him (my mate) ripped off,-or laughed at, when he makes an offer. Again, thanks for the speedy reply. Andy
  10. Clive, Cheers for the reply. From what my mate has said, the vehicle is up and running. Thr majority of the (visible) rusting seems to be around the front wings and windscreens. Canvas rear cover is said to be in good,no holes condition. although he did say that the roof 'hatch', covers were missing. (the vehicle, at present, is stored undercover.) I'll ask him about the rear floor, if theres a hole, I take it ,- its a reasonable size, and can't be mistaken for a rust 'cure', patch ?? What were these things like to drive, ? and to 'live with', I understand its got a rolls engine, and is of the same 'family' as the champ, although, I 'm given to understand has a larger engine. Is it multi fuel ? Sorry for asking so many questions, but I don't want to give the wrong info, etc Cheers for taking the time on this. Andy
  11. A great idea, Jack. I guess quite a few of us, get, at times, quite complacent, about some of the attractions/suppliers we may have 'on our doorsteps', With the 'membership', of hmfv, growing, and localities spreading, I would think the response will be very positive. I can pprob, do something on sabre sales, even though its already been said somewhere else on site, cobbaton , and local to me, newhaven fort, if anyones interested. Andy
  12. sticking my two pennth' worth in, I have to agree with Clives comments, I also visit forums, that can get 'taken over', by a small minority of its members,- becoming, almost a 'private conversation'. To my mind, hmfv, and Jack, has got the balance right. Long may it continue. Andy
  13. Anyone any experience/, etc for this vehicle ? I know the pig was based on its chassis, and a friend has got interested in one that he's found for sale;- but cannot find out much about them. Spares availability, etc Here's hopping someone out there has had something to do with them. Andy
  14. A very merry christmas to all. Here's to a great new year 2006. Health and Happiness. Andy
  15. No Jack, not my images,...........I saved them for my own useage from another site. Will try and find which one, and ask permission, before going any further. (after posting last message, I found that posting that you refer to,.although, it looks complicated to me) thanks, and I'll keep in touch. Andy
  16. How does one go about posting pics onto site ? I've a few,on Jpeg, gleaned from another site,.whats the score regarding these being pe-posted here ? (I cannot remember which site I found them at.) Is there a copyright issue, - maybe ?? Not meaning to sound negative, with these queries, (honest). Andy
  17. Well, I've said it here before, -try your local libary,...................... I thought I'd give it a go, on the off-chance that a copy maybe lurking on a shelf, somewhere in the southern half of england,..and what do you know, there is a copy, soft back, on the shelf,..............in Bexhill, !!!!! approx 10 miles from where I was standing. To say I was Gobsmacked was an understatment,......but it just goes to show,.....................libaries, I love them. Andy
  18. I dunno about anybody else, but I'm dreading opening my e mither port,- just lucky I don't have children/easily shockable people around,- what with the 'increase the size of your........................;' ' I stayed e£^ct all night, etc,etc..........', I know I can block spam, but, I recieve mail that I'm expecting, that also comes in as spam.............. I guess the sensible advice, that someone told me, is to never respond to such c$ap. Andy
  19. Paul, I'm down nr polegate, and go up there fairly regularly, like you, I've not heard of any, so I'd be interested to hear of such, as well. Will ask about, next time I'm up there. Andy
  20. Its a good idea, Jack. Having seen thoughts similar on a couple of WWII forums, recently, one of the biggest 'stumbling blocks', I can see, is , for example, take a Tommy's equipment/uniform. 1) what period, because it did change, - slightly,-during the war. 2) which uniform, due,in part to the style changing, again, slightly during the period. ( think of seeing the BEF, wearing puttees, and to a certain extent WWI uniforms) Also, the uniform itself, whilst being reasonably 'standard', did have differences, dependant on where produced. (I've a RA uniform, dated 1943 make in canada, and the karki green colour and material is different to that produced here in the uk. A good starting point, regarding BA uniforns, certainly,I have found, is WWII Tommy - British Army Uniforms, Europe 39-45,in colour. Please don't take this a knocking your idea, which, is a good one, and one that could well be of benefit, to all. (I've also a pair of KD shorts, and would like to 'complete the uniform to those, so, desert/italian campain uniforms would be good) Be interesting to see others comments on this subject. Cheers. Andy

  22. Paul, Spoke to Rodney tonight, mentioned there MIGHT be a possibility of vehicles turning up, and his response was,.great, just give him a bell, and he'll cone an area off, so's there's a space available. No's 01424 439601 It does sound like a fairly local do, -I guess, 'reading between the lines,' people from the church, so's it may be worth speaking directly to him.
