  1. It has probably been answered a hundred times before and there are threads on here somewhere but can't seem to find them. With reference to the G503 lube chart etc. What are (modern) british equivalent types of oil and lubricants that will be compatible with the jeep -e.g. engine oils, gear box, transfer case and axle oils etc I don't want to relube and change oils etc to find that I have used wrong type that will rot or melt seals etc. Jeep previously from California and never been serviced here until now Thanks Gary
  2. Quite right Kuno It would be nice to see but is too far off our intended route, perhaps for another trip in the future? Regards Gary

  7. Lee, CW, Adam and Kuno apologies but was snowed under with work and this exped planning to get back to any threads etc. Will pursue all links and still trying to get loan of a Bagnold compass- I have an engineer and technician who can make copies of any artefact and produce same in brass, stainless etc. Repro is fine as long as accurate and working. Re azimuth tables thanks for info and will pursue. Kuno do you have photo of same? Regards Gary
  8. Some formations were marked up with white crosses to effectively take them out of the exercise whilst moving to a new area or serial in the exercise then at the new start point remarked as blue or orange forces and fed back into the exercise. Saved fuel and the logistic chain moving them in formation etc and lessened any confusion between opposing forces seeing large amounts of armour and vehicles moving through or round their lines etc. Gary
  9. Commonly known as a Glengarry with red/white chequered pattern all around it Gazzaw
  10. The first diagram a few missives above is the correct dimension for the comd shelter and was always 4 arches (3 bays) in main part and 4 for missile and entrance bays- the purpose of the missile bay was to allow any blast effect (e.g. from grenade lobbed into entrance or nearby explosions) to travel into this area and upwards pushing soil and Flexible Revetting Material (FRM) absorbing some of it. To put an elsan in there -if you were to spend any time down there- would have been untenable - with approx 10 people disposing of their excreted compo into a bucket, unless you wore respirators at all times (good NBC (now CBRN) training) The FRM was cut and wrapped around the upright stakes and over the arches in a certain way before wiring to stakes and backfilling- this was an art in itself to prevent the FRM bulging inwards and drastically reducing your working space. hope this helps Gary W
  11. It was primarily designed to be dug by the Light Mobile Digger (LMD) (Thornycroft??) basically a rear mounted conveyor belt with teeth that dug down to depth (approx 1.3m) then driven forward pushing earth upwards and outwards from the excavation. The MEXE (basic comd shelter) could be dug out with 3 passes for main area and 1 for missile trap/entrance bay. with a section of Asslt Pnrs and LMD it could be in the ground and backfilled in an hour (trained troops) to hand dig was obviously a lot longer but have put them in within 12hrs of hard graft. depending on soil/ ground types- a lot longer on Salisbury plain that wrecked every hand tool with its flint/chalk sub soil -parts of GDR /BAOR ex areas were very sandy and easy digging. 12. Hi Does anyone know where I can get information about navigating by sun compass and desert navigation from British Army WW2 training manuals and techniques etc. Repro booklets, info or anything else welcome thank you Gary
  13. Re the velox, is that not a vauxhall wyvern, more bull nosed than velox which was flatter if memory serves me. I also remember the Vauxhall Ventora souped up 6 cyl beasts used by rmp in Berlin to race along corridor and as chase cars etc. (white mice?) gary
  14. Does anyone have any cookbook data/ rations info for the western desert campaign and other relevant information to allow a small LRDG re-enactment unit to follow recipes and use similar foodstuffs to 1941-43? I have had a request for this but we are not rations or Chef (Old ACC now RLC) type of unit. Or point me towards any relevant books etc Thank you gary

  17. Dear All Now becoming clearer and vehicle was uplifted for restoration by Alan Galt via the original owner, although a lot of this info was never passed although it was recorded by our local Sqn it came about from a third party. I am relieved that is has not been stolen and it has gone to a good home. Will update when I get more info and initial fears of movement unaware to myself, who is holding the records and photos (passed on from original custodian) for past 20 years have been resolved. I will contact Mr Galt and offer him copies of all our records. The problems arose because the local Sqn, with no interest in vehicle restoration, were happy to get rid of it and the solution was presented when the original owner asked Mr Galt to take it over and it was subsequently taken away. All of this was never passed onto others who were interested in its well-being . Gary
  18. My 43 GPW is Bouncing Betty, well upholstered and gives a good bounce when stripped for action Gary
  19. Hi Guys n Gals Does anyone know if you can get the little blackout masks for the inside of the GPW front marker light doors. I have the working lights with these missing from inside, everything else working but need them to make them right for blackout mode. Alternatively are there any templates to make same? Thanks Gary
  20. For what it is worth the top hole looks like a shaped charge penetration from a beehive or nesting beehive (CD11 or other CD charges) This would have to be placed and secured by some method to ensure stand-off etc was correct. Gary
