On July 15th 1942 the first train with deported Jews left for Auswitz. In it were 1137 people of which 962 from Amsterdam, the rest were Jewish orphans and German jews who fled Germany to Holland hoping to find a save haven.

Another 92 transports would follow, deporting 101.800 persons. Less then 5000 returned alive.

Around 24.000 Jews went into hiding, of them around 16.000 survived the war. I'm proud to say that my grandma hid a Jewish man who survived.

The courage your Grandmother showed was, well it defies words. Many people who hid Jews or in the case of Jersey Russian prisoners from the Germans ended up in the camps themselsves. Many did not return either.

She has left you a lot to live up to old mate!
