First flight of the Westland Dragonfly.

The dragonfly was a licence built version of the Sikorsky S-51 light helicopter.

The British version used a 500 hp Alvis Leonides radial engine. (The S-51 had used a Pratt & Whitney R-985, 450 hp engine.)

The Dragonfly entered service with the Royal Navy in an air-sea rescue role, but it would also go into RAF service (as a communications helicopter)

Westland were to develop the Dragonfly by increasing the cabin capacity and replacing the Dragonfly's rotor head, blades and gearbox by the units used in the Westland Whirlwind. This model became the Widgeon.
