AlienFTM
I was browsing in Waterstones before Christmas and spotted this book on the shelf. I read it nearly 30 years ago (so I am working from memory here) and was pleasantly surprised to see it back in print. If you've ever read the works of Sven Hassel and wondered what it was really like on the Russian Front during WW2, this book is for you. It records the author's story of his time in the elite Großdeutschland Panzergrenadierdivision. I cannot really recall much detail except how it was so cold dug in that whenever anybody needed a slash, they all gathered round to get the warmth of his urine into his hands. I am cold just thinking about it. Should have put it on my Christmas wish list. (
Degsy
A very good book I read regularly, the urine on the hands was a treatment for chilblains, it certainly gives an excellent account of the conditions in the east.
ArtistsRifles
Read this one years ago - definitely agree with the recommendation. IIRC the author was a French volunteer too .....
