Mick,

I always use Silver Hammerite, of the smooth variety. The original paint is aluminium paint, I forget the exact make up of it, but Hammerite will do a good job. You can also paint it over rusty areas which is a bonus.

While Hammerite is good I've found Black Friar's QD 90 to be a lot better. It comes in loads of different colours ( including Land Rover Green ), is heat resistance to 150 C and their rust inhibiting primmer stops rust coming back for years . And you can thin it and clean your brushes with normal White Spirit. Which is nice! ;-)

You won't find it the B & Q type places though, I get mine from a local Crown Paint Center.

Paul,

I have a tin of that stuff, some people complain it stays soft and comes off on your clothes. I don't think it does much to stop rust, I've not seen many vehicles which have been painted with that stuff without rusty patches.

I use gun wash to thin Hammerite and haven't had any problems yet? :dunno:
