Chieftain and Challenger 1 over-pitched sprockets

Recommended Posts

I was looking at the AESP for the AVRE, which says 96 links when new, condemn at 92. Nothing about different-sized sprockets, which seem a rather odd idea to me anyway - why would you bother?

When in active service, it would be of more benefit logistically to carry over-pitch sprockets rather than sets of tracks.

I was going to say that makes sense, but not just carry on taking links out?

OK, I think I've got it, so I'll answer my own question. Once you get below 92 links, the links are so stretched that they no longer fit the sprockets properly. So to go to 91 links in the absence of replacement track you take out a link and fit the larger pitch sprockets. Simples! :-)
