Truck Virgin

Recommended Posts

The story so far. We bought a truck a year ago A 1989 Bedford MJ 4x4 ex mountain rescue, surprisingly good nick. Im fitting it out as we are going of travelling in it, no plan as to where, we giving it 5 years, see how far we get. It was all fitted out but badly done and any way it leaked like a sieve. Ive been a woodworker all my life, started as a boatbuilder and yacht fitter, moved on to furniture then settled for traditional coach builder, so the insides are no problem. We are in Suffolk, truck is in Cornwall, is a long story, another time. It runs fine and nothing major showing up, however gearbox came out as it was showing crap in the oil and exploration showed case hardning worn through on 5th gear. rest of the box is in excellent condition so trying to find a replacement 5th gear cog rather than replace the whole thing. This where it gets difficult. Have done about 10 of the obvious candidates so far and no luck. Most react with " they were 4 speed boxes" and "have you got a part no?" Its a 5.4 Litre Turbo engine single rear wheels, the spec sheet shows they did a 5 speed with the 135 bhp version, question is it a Turner or a Spicer, seems to be some confusion. No tag on the box any more. Question - where can i find part no for the cog, is there a parts catalogue available. I have manuals. . . all except the gearbox section which is missing. Look forward to hearing from anyone with bedford experience, stories etc.

The British military MJ did not have 5-speed boxes, this must be a retrofit, possibly a Turner box. you could try one of the Bedford spares specialists, for instance Ditton Service Station, near Maidstone, the parts dept. number is 01732 844920
