Jeep speedo problem

Trying to sort out my speedo in my GPW,needle just bounces. Whats the most common problem for this. My cable is a little tight [53"] but looks in good order. Is there anyone in UK who has experience in servicing jeep speedometers?

I had the same thing, bouncing speedo for 6 years. Put a new cable in and now runs nice and smooth. Don't know why I waited 6 years:nut:

Worth a try for a tenner or so.

You could try detatching the speedo end and running some light oil down it, or remove it and give it a petrol bath while turning it in a drill to rinse out any crud, then oil it.

Will give it a go. Would like to keep the cable I have as it looks like an original metal type. Would the inner cable be damaged but not show i.e stretched?

If you take it off from both ends, and turn it by hand, you should feel if there are any tight spots from dirt or kinks.
