spanter Posted June 22, 2012 Posted June 22, 2012 Was wondering when did the practice of painting gas detection patches on vehicles and aircraft stop, were any vehicles coming ashore in Normandy still equipped? Cheers Steve Quote
Pete Ashby Posted June 22, 2012 Posted June 22, 2012 Good question , don't know the definitive answer, but as troops landed on the initial landings with gas masks and anti gas impregnated uniforms I am guessing that gas patches were still applied to vehicles. Pete Quote
Tony B Posted June 22, 2012 Posted June 22, 2012 Some of the vehicles going ashore definitley had the plates still in place. On the Bedford QL it was a metal plate under the driver's windscreen. Quote
Lauren Child Posted June 23, 2012 Posted June 23, 2012 Keep in mind that (from what I understand) the gas detection paint normal colour changed from yellow (early war) to green (later war), so you may not be able to see the markings on later green vehicles. Quote
spanter Posted June 25, 2012 Author Posted June 25, 2012 Thanks for all the replies, I have had a google about and found a thread on g503 showing someone's jeep where he had found some of this paint and it was a off lime yellow, would you do this to your vehicle to help it stand out or am I asking for trouble from people asking why is it like that? Cheers. Steve Quote
Tony B Posted June 25, 2012 Posted June 25, 2012 Tell them that the paint will change colour in the presence of a clever person. They'll stand there for hours waiting. :cool2: Quote
spanter Posted June 25, 2012 Author Posted June 25, 2012 I like that, It's guaranteed never to change colour while I'm around. Quote
Pete Ashby Posted June 25, 2012 Posted June 25, 2012 (edited) Thanks for all the replies, I have had a google about and found a thread on g503 showing someone's jeep where he had found some of this paint and it was a off lime yellow, would you do this to your vehicle to help it stand out or am I asking for trouble from people asking why is it like that? Cheers. Steve I painted a large yellow splodge on the bonnet of my C15A 12 cab (see photo below) and was pleasantly surprised that most people new what it was for, and those that didn't asked and were always interested to hear how it worked. I would do it but make sure you get the colour and position correct is all I would suggest. Pete Edited June 25, 2012 by Pete Ashby Quote
spanter Posted June 26, 2012 Author Posted June 26, 2012 Was thinking of painting it between the star and the circle on the bonnet as I've found a wartime picture of jeeps like this, at worse it'll be a reasonably easy part to mask back up and respray, I hope. Cheers Steve Quote
Tony B Posted June 26, 2012 Posted June 26, 2012 Wern't some of the stars themsleves gas paint? Quote
