Unimog 404

Hi Folks,

I haven't looked into joining a Unimog or merc forum just yet because the deal hasn't been finalised..... :D

The Mog is approx 40 miles away and a good mate has a spec-lift lorry that would cope no bother.

Does anyone know the configuration of the transmission/4WD system? Is it Hi/N/Lo selector and a 2WD/4WD selector?

I am looking into a suspended tow and wondered if the transfer box could be placed in neutral to allow the run home.

I am also considering it may be easier if it could be left in 2WD, lashing the steering and suspending the rear end.

Torque tubes means no propshaft removals, although pulling halfshafts may be an option. :D

Any thoughts?

Alec.

As a long term 404 mog owner i'd advise you join the "benzworld" forum and go to the unimog section as practically every question you can ever ask has been answered.

the gear box is a 6 speed with no HI/Low like on a LR but the bottom 2 gears are like a low box. Forward / reverse is a separate lever as is 2wd/4wd/4wd difflock. reverse only works in 1st and 2nd gear.

You cannot remove the halfshafts due to the portal axles and any form of suspended tow is not recommended for any distance due to oil starvation (if you can get it onto the Spec lift due to the 3 foot plus tyes). towing can be done on the ground with a rigid bar, according to the specifications the gearbox must in forward, 2WD and the main gear lever in the neutral position between the 5/6th gear positions (to keep the oil moving), with a top towing speed of 30KPH. it is advised to check the gearbox oil levels first and top up with GL4 rated SAE 80/90 gear oil. the use of any EP type oil in a old mog will kill the bronze bearings in no time.

PM me your email address and i'll send you the user manual. the maintenance manual is also freely available on the net. which saves you £100.

Anything else just ask

Thanks for that, I've managed to find/download a big file, 90-odd Megs worth of user/workshop/mountains of info/Mog-related stuff! :cheesy:

It's gonna be a flat bed just to be sure now....... :-D
