brian in denver
well in matching the terain features from the german map, I think here. http://wikimapia.org/#lat=31.8185743&lon=24.1379929&z=16&l=0&m=b&search=Latitude%3A%2031.8667%20longitude%3A24.13611 but i dont see any man made marks. and I suspect this is point 175 http://wikimapia.org/#lat=31.8105879&lon=24.2351961&z=15&l=0&m=b&search=Latitude%3A%2031.8667%20longitude%3A24.13611 BB
No Signals
This link has a basic map showing the relative position between the mosque and the airfield. http://www.nzetc.org/tm/scholarly/WH2Arti-fig-WH2Art040a.html This google earth image seems to back this up. The upper cluster of embedded pics seem to show the mosque and a blockhouse and the lower two pics titles refer to them showing some ruined part of the airfield. Of course the 'locations' of the pics is pretty appromimate i guess but the terrain seems to match up with the map on the other link. But little trace of much else to be seen, hampered by being on the boundary between some clear GE imagery and some lesser quality.
brian in denver
unfortunatly I cant seem to zoom on your map? guess I dont have the right program. looking at the NZ website, I think this must be the blockhouse. http://wikimapia.org/#lat=31.8134689&lon=24.2023551&z=17&l=0&m=b&search=Latitude%3A%2031.8667%20longitude%3A24.13611 I noticed on the wikimapia site theres imbeded pics on another level. but there way to the west. OK were looking at the same pics. Yah when you turn off the pics you dont see any bldgs. I think the guy laid em out perty randomly. I marked what I think must be the blockhouse. and measured 5 miles from the mosque to the block house. I see a white spot halfway in between that must be the stone airport tower. http://wikimapia.org/#lat=31.8087644&lon=24.1680658&z=17&l=0&m=b&v=8 I do notice another east west track running past the last (southern) gun emplacment you think this could be the Trigh capuzzo? No Signals
Another GE image that I've added the basics of the sketch map to. Ridges. roads, mosque. If, as it seems, the map is reasonably accurate regarding the relative layout of the features then my guess the airfield would have been somewhere in the box area. Happy to be put right by anyone with more specific knowledge. Was initially nearly misled by the (derelict?) more modern airfield a bit further to the west. Paul Drake
Yes, The airfield to the west was RAF El Adem, in use into the 70's, now mostly derelict.
brian in denver
as near as I can tell the power lines follow the Trigh Capuzzo all the way to the Fort area, at the Egyptian border crossing. any clues as to where fort madelnia is/ was. on the southern end of the border? maybe here http://wikimapia.org/#lat=31.4002148&lon=24.8702037&z=17&l=0&m=b&v=8 BB Edited April 15, 2011 by brian in denver
