Whilst i was at boarding school in the early seventies (NOT BORSTAL :-D....) in good ol`e B.F.E.S. germany the head of catering (ex Whermacht chef ) fed the whole school on various military cast off`s.
I can remember one occasion `having a fag `the smoking variety, and stacked by the bins were large food tins the produce being emptied out for the evening meal and they were all pre 1945 dated :schocked:
This guy was always proud to announce when cake and fresh cream was on the menu. but when it arrived the cake was broken up for pea shooter ammo in the dormitory that night and the cream if left would return to its natural state which was ....condensed milk, this was kept to make tea/coffee after lights out with water from the hot tap in the bathroom to dunk oatmeal blocks in

Hello all,
today the town of Wimbourne in Dorset Royal British Legion launched their `poppy appeal` the Dorset branch had been asked to possibly supply vehicles but only a maximum of four parking spaces were available.
Though it was a small event there was a fair amount of intrest from the public and many yarns were exchanged. Being late  i did not manage to get any earlier pictures so here`s are some from the square

sorry, all the picture discriptions have not appeared at all, vehicles attended were.......
1942 Bedford fuel bowser,
1942 GMC,
M20,
Hotchkiss jeep,
Ford GPW
The onion seller ( a Frenchman ) is apparently a frequent visitor to the town and as far as i know not a member of the resistance !

If I were given that vehicle to drive in combat in that state, at the first opportunity I'd slap a can of Olive Drab on it (or Khaki if applicable).
I would agree but forget the OD, see avatar

As long as you can appreciate that they were also built postwar (i believe the number was 500) some went to Switzerland but most ended up in America (Oregon?? forestry service springs to mind)
Ashley
I like those vehicles.
Hope I'll own 1 some day...

HEY, what happens when eventually everyone gets to the Field Marshall level :?

Hi Jack,
as you may have gathered from some of the local MVT members, if you sat them in front of a P.C. they would spend ages trying to find the B.B.C. and ITV channels :-D

Would we be having this discussion if it were German prisoners being shot??
Yes i believe so,
i know it has been documented that Allied soldiers killed prisoners of war but it was rather the exception than the norm.
But with the SS being such a political pawn of the Third Reich and the documented fear, terror, and ruthless execution of their duties caused them to bring shame upon the German people.

I totally agree with you Tim (too) and hardyferret,
to actually film such a scenario is bad enough, but to post it on a public viewing platform is as far as i am concerned complete and utter stupidity :nono:.
Yet i also agree with Jack, an extension of military vehicle ownership is living history/ re-enacting, and these are what the public want to see these days. Far from the early days of MV collecting when the Public were happy just to see the vehicles in static displays and arena appearances, things have moved on.
At the Horndean show this year i was watching some of the SS re-enacters, some accurate portrayals were evident, but also the fanaticism (aggression) was also very evident from one or two participants, and any of you who know me fairly well also know i have a keen interest in modern German military history (from 1900 - 1957) but find some (and it is just some) of these people somewhat disturbing who portray the political side rather than the military side.
But on saying that the German armed forces (mostly ) of the the period 1935-1945 were politically indoctrinated, apart from that....... great vehicles, uniforms, arms and armaments, and some people who fought `for germany`

Clive,
nice to see you this weekend, along with Berni, Ross and Rowan, and hope you enjoyed yourselves. Sorry to say that members of the Dorset Branch of the MVT were very thin on the ground indeed must of been the threat of aqueous solution probable by the Met. office
Anyways thanks to all who arrived with vehicles especially, those from out side the area. Sunday morning was quite active compared to Saturday, until the looming clouds forced a mass packing up session, except for H.K. Dave who tried to fly his tent like a kite :-D

Hi Clive,
this meet is usually very relaxed and attendance varies though it is usually well attended. Camping (sleeping in vehicles) is the norm for overnight stayers.
In the evening there is a road run for those who want to take part , this will have a pub stop :-P
People have sold their extra`s, double`s etc and there are no strict pitch payments
In the past there has been a tour of the reserve collection on the sunday morning but i can not give any guarantees for this year.
Also German re-enactors set up camp.
This has been the generalization in the past
Hopefully see you there (bring some sun with you please:) 0

Mr Hardyferret,
You could always go over the top and paint your Lightweight like the one in this photo.
It was one of five, that I built for the Honourable Artillery Company in 1988, for Royal Salute duties at the Tower of London. Gloss Deep Bronze Green, black chassis, white upholstery, chrome bumpers, etc.
Richard
There you are ! a good reason to polish/buff it until is shines like your 101 8-) 8-) :schocked:
