  1. That sounds like a remark I made about wall strength, but I did not mean it in the way you are thinking. Think of the Fox in its intended role, a combat vehicle, if a XL tyre had a puncture it would deflate completely, even if it had a bead spacer as the old Dunlop Runflats had, so would not be able to be driven further, whereas with a Hutchinson insert it converts a normal tyre in to a runflat, supporting the tyre somewhat to enable it to get to safety.
  2. Hi Montie, It could be a tracta fork shaft in the drive line that has broken ( one of four forks ), tracta joint broken up or epicyclic reduction in hub has stripped teeth. An inspection of the hub reduction gear might be worth doing to eliminate.
  3. Hi Montie, Looks like you are going to have to lift the engine out then. Bevel gears are matched pairs and have to be shimmed up to get correct tooth engagement, so not a job that can be done insitu. Are you saying the crown wheel can be turned without jacking up the wheel?
  4. Not many had power steering, only armstrong steering :-D
  5. Rob, I have sent you a PM ref. your post here.
  6. If it blows again, then you will have to check it out, might be a wiring problem...
  7. I did the Guernsey Liberation tour in 1990 and we had a day trip to Sark.........along with Royalty, Princess Alexandra. Transport is either bicycles, tractors or horse and cart, we had the latter. It was funny to see the Queens Flight helicopter crew travelling around in a transport box on a tractor :-D
  8. Mark, These have divided rims, not so easy. Different approach too.
  9. Mark, Read the link that Gritineye has put up. I worked for the Army in Kent when Fox was in service and there were no tyre companies in the area who could fit these tyres when they were issued as replacement for Trackgrip runflats. You may have to talk to Hutchinson who made the runflat inserts, to find someone with the equipment. It actually converts a normal radial tyre into a runflat by giving wall support and being a beadlock.
  10. Tom, A great report and a good test run. Plenty of things to check out now, hope your next journey is not so eventful !
  11. Just seen this; www.saddleworthnews.com/?p=1730 Click on the link in the news item, for more details.
  12. When GW1 blew up, the Workshops where I worked, went mad, all other work was suspended, with convoys of vehicles coming in from units for painting. All those painted would have gone out there unless they did not make it to the docks. We had lines of trucks, snaking through the shop being prepared and masked for paint, ready to go through the paintshops. Even had a load of coaches come in from Germany to be painted white with red crosses.
  13. No suspension either so chassis twist only, if it was used over uneven surface. more likely something used for a specific purpose within a factory perhaps. Cross member at back end does look like a Bedford front member where the front engine mount is, thinking O-type and similar models.
  14. Hi Andy, I don't think I mentioned that company, but have used their paint in the past. The C71 is the type of paint I normally use. If you are going to get one can mixed specially, I would try Jeeparts first, as it may be cheaper if they have some in stock already. Just done some DBG this afternoon, went off very quickly despite temp not being ideal.
  15. Steve, If you are thinking of the proximity of Rochester, Kent to Cadman's yard, then you should be aware that the JCB plant is in Rocester, Staffordshire.
  16. I have seen some of these Morris filters in recent years, for sale. A chap in Norway bought a large stock of MCC parts and in some photos was a pile of these.
  17. If I remember correctly, these grease points were done every 12 months according to the SS, there was a good chance the engine was removed for some repair during that period and things like that could be done at the same time.
  18. Jules, Got it in one ! Tread depth and whether the rubber is degrading, ie black comes off on your hands. Sending a PM Richard
  19. Hi Jules, One of the pitfalls is tyres, they are an odd size and only vehicle fitted with 7.00-18 Trackgrip runflats. That being said, I have fitted some truck tyres to one, found them in the US and they do not wear like the old runflats ( which were last made in the 1950's). Fuel economy, think it is around 10-12 mpg, depending on how you drive of course. Great little vehicle, needs regular oil level checks, due to primitve oil sealing of tracta housings. MoT.......I have had to have one tested, but others have been on an exemption sanctioned by DVLA, it is not asked for on the licence renewal. The customers one that I had to get tested was not an issue, a local garage did it, and I took the tester out on the road with his Tapley meter. Going price, well not too many seen advertised in this country lately. regards, Richard
  20. Can't see it from here, Tony :-D sorry, just realised you meant from your first post?. Looks like it is based on a Kegresse half track, not Citroen as it is too big, maybe it is based on Burford Kegresse that was used by the British Army?
  21. Andy, Forgot to say, it is a normal synthetic paint. you can use white spirit, but it is much better to use Standard Thinners ( you can get this easily from agricultural machinery dealers in 1 litre cans). Semi Matt is much like Satin, I normally use about 10% thinners to paint, it does not want to be too thin.
  22. Andy, Call Jeeparts UK, I have had Light Stone from them, it is a Semi-Matt, which has a slight sheen initially then tones down as it hardens. Does not absorb oil like matt does. They have two suppliers, Cromadex and Firwood. Cheaper to buy from them than to have one can mixed for you specially.
  23. Hi Tim, According to info from the RE Museum, just found the letter, during the war in the Western Desert, it was realised that Sappers required an armoured vehicle to perfom reconnaissances. Eventually each RE troop / platoon commander had a Daimler or Humber scout car as well as two being available at Company HQ. As for the number, I cannot say, because it depends on whether it was attached to an Infantry or Armoured Div and the numbers were changed at some point , possibly 1943. Mine was with an Infantry Div, with number 48, a Senior Field Coy RE.
