  1. Thanks Andy , where about's are you based ? Dave
  2. Thanks Louis , I'll give him a call on Monday , fingers crossed.
  3. We'll be dressed in best BD to the South Lancashire Regiment , my Dads old Regiment
  4. Thanks for that John very helpful , I noticed on the dash at the top there are 2 rivets but no plate ? I'll get in touch with RLC and fingers crossed might be able to dig it up . The rear lights ,now I know what to keep a look out for:). Found the Chassis number ok. The truck is in pretty good nick , more cosmetic work than anything else .I was told that the chassis brakes etc had all been done recently but I'll still go through it . There are small bits of the body which need to be repaired / fabricated. Bits that are missing which are obvious ,the bracket that holds the bonnet in place at the back, horn push, rear lights, brackets that hold the spade and pick axe, tow bar pin , and if I can find a Lucas switch panel I will replace that as the one in the dash is a bit ropey , I will no doubt come across more bits that I will need when I get stuck into it properly. Appreciate all the input very helpful . Dave
  5. Thanks Wally ,I'll have a look for it .
  6. Yes:) , I was tallking with him this year ,(thats how I got to be his "official" driver ) :cool2: ,he was telling me of the restrictions in place around the Caen and Sword areas too ,Imps as far as I am aware are involved .
  7. Hi Wally I'll have a clean around and see if I can find one , is the plate located towards the front ? I live nr Leeming Bar
  8. Hi I hope this is helpful : I know Adrian the Mayor of Arromanche and 2014 there will be restrictions on movement on the 6th ,his are intentions are .. allow ONLY British marked vehicles on the front (in the areas the ceremonies are held) what restrictions on the beach I'm not 100% ,for the 6th June ,I will be his driver(with Jeep) and run him around on his official duties on the day. I know he does not like the abundance of American marked vehicles, star and stripe flags hanging off vehicles in a British sector, he is going to Police and put these requirements in place for 2014 .I have been told Pass's are required for vehicle movement into the area and also into Caen and Sword Beach areas . When I speak with him in the new year I'll get more info on the vehicle requirements and see if pass's are available , or if they are for official vehicles only . As I say ,I don't know what the vehicle requirements/movements are for the "Beach" , only for the front . I'll get more info in the new year and post it .
  9. Thanks , I've been after one for a long time but they seem to be like "hens teeth" , and when they have come up I've been too slow off the mark . The engine runs nice but the rear core plug and head gasket are weeping (not a big job)..thankfully. It has 3 (look new) correct tyres? and the odd one on the front plus the spare is odd too.I did a bit of internet searching and found http://www.totectyres.co.uk/military.aspx , rang them and they expect delivery early in new year , they are the same pattern as the Dunlop Tracker which matches the 3 on the MW at around £135 each delivered ,which I thought was a good price ? Dave
  10. Hi I'm relatively new to the forum so don't know a great deal of people , I live in North Yorkshire , my small collection of vehicles consist of 42 Willys, MBT Trailer, Mk1 Welbike , and a folding Para Bicycle ,and now a 44 bedford MW under restoration .Dave The MW is unknown territory for me .I would be very grateful if someone could answer a number of questions so I get it right . On my Jeep I have the 'M' prefix number .Why has the MW a 'Z' number and is it possable to find the correct number that was issued? .I've noticed on photo's that some have the number on the door and others on the bonnet , also some with star's others without , were Div markings put on the rear tailboard as again I've seen them with and without. The vehicle I have found doesn't have the rear lights , has anyone got a picture of them so I can look out for correct lights , temporarily I'm going to fit the round Landrover stop/tail lamps . I would be very grateful if someone could aim me in the right direction .
  11. Yes that's the one , I'm going over tomorrow to buy up the MW bits he's removing and the spare's he has for my MW restoration .
  12. Its in the North of England , a friend of mine bought it to keep and finish it off as a "German" MW .
  13. Gonna make sure I don't put my tent next to the Griffin engine display this time thats just one noisy intimidating piece of kit :wow:
  14. I have just sold an original primed and painted for £80.00 complete with tags/plates
  15. Hi They are going to assemble 5 replica welbikes with chassis numbers 001 to 005 , as far as the replica frames they are going to make , I am not sure if they will be coding them . Dave
  16. The XXE which was modified / uprated during the war which had improved internal sealing. These improved engines can be recognised by a change in the prefix to XXA in the case of the JDL , and I would think as it has been mentioned, the numbers differed as the war went . Check the frame number and markings on the headstock for verification of a genuine welbike not just the engine number , condition is debateable , I've seen 3 in Arnhem in a private collection , they were in excellent condition , basicly taken out of their containers by the Dutch and kept at the end of the war , so condition mmmm not always the case . Just another tell tale on the early MK2 Series 1 , when assembled it was found that the tanks were too close to the wheel , another tank mounting was welded behind the first one , so you will find 2 tank mounting brackets on some, attached is a picture of an early MK2 Series 1 I am renovating with the extra mount . Chassis number 1260
  17. Speak to Malcom at www.welbikeuk.com quality stuff , hellish engineers , the engineer that makes the items has had welbikes for years he has just brought a MK2 Series 2 in from America to renovate . These guy's are the bees knees , I've just paid them a visit and had my steering sorted its perfect , they are now supplying european dealers with parts . Forget the Indian he's bad news ,I know of someone who's had dealings with him, stick with British engineering quality ! Dave
  18. Just thought I would update on my restoration of a MK2 Series 1 Welbike . I rang www.welbikeuk.com described to them the problem with the steering assembly on the above , basicly it was beyond saving . Malcolm invited me down to their workshops in Stoke to show me around show me some of the items they made ,and also told me to bring along the frame and bars to have a look at it etc (I had already dismantled it) . I went this morning (Wednesday) arrived after a 3hr journey and it was well worth it , they are such an accommodating friendly bunch of people. Malcolm said "lets have a look at the frame" , he took it into the workshop pointed out the lad (sorry forgot his name) that he was the expert and has had welbikes for years. Within an hour the steering components were re-assembled in the frame , I had only gone down to purchase the bits , but while we had a cuppa it was machined brazed and finished , absolutely PERFECT, the components are such high quality in material and finish , you cannot tell the difference betwen the original and new , the detailing even down to the nails! that hold the tube into the yolk (these were put in on assembly to line them up before brazing) are there even put in at the correct angle , the detailing is amazing . Malcolm showed me wheels , frames, forks, clutch perch etc etc , the wheels are machined out of solid square blocks of steel!! , forget the indian rubbish , these lads make the real macoy there also increasing the range of items , definately recommend these lads , and I would think any vehicle hard to get part if you had a word and they have a pattern to work from ,it wouldn't be a problem for them. I'll be definately be getting my grips and cables and ant other bits from them , yep I'm over the moon with the work they did for me can't praise them enough , Excellent.

    Welbike

Not many then ! I have a second contract Welbike ,it was bought from a steel foundry in Scunthorpe 1947 by a local garage owner for £1.00 for his children to play on , his children out grew it and it was then "dumped" in the back of the garage until 1999 when the person I bought it off came across it. I have a couple of small jobs to make it "road worthy" , steering and forks need sorting , tyre , clutch lever and a new coil , but I'll give it a full strip down and rebuild while I'm on , going down to Welbike UK next week to have a tour of the workshop and collect all the steering parts:)

    Welbike

Wonder if there is a Welbike Register (not Repo) any where , would be interesting to know how many have survived Dave
  24. I remember the one in between the garage blocks on our estate when were kids mid 60's , and they used to test it , apparentley incase of a nuclear attack !! , that was on top of a telegraph pole and it WAS loud we were only 2 houses away from it , there was one on the old fire station , one on the old tannery next to the old POW camp and one up near the army barracks (Ripon N Yorkshire) and they have all gone , apart from the old telegraph pole on my old estate.
  25. Hi Martyn Your right about the clutch lever it should face backwards , it has at some point been snapped off, the weld is still on the bars , I'll either make a new perch or buy one and re-weld the correct one on along with a new lever . The forks are bent and the wrong way around , must have been run into a wall , thats the biggest fault with it , I'll have to see what the best way around it is when I make a start , but that will be the first job on the agenda :-). The carb top is the XXX brass the manifold is brass but looks like the carb has been changed , have to keep my eye open for one . Dave
