    Rear axle back in place. New can of straight gear oil arrived yesterday, just need to tighten the U bolts and fill with oil, typically the weather isn’t playing ball to get it finished. 
     

    Opinions and advice needed in regards to Divisional markings

    I am going to order some stencils soon so I’d like a few ideas for 1944-45 markings, what’s division’s/regiments would have had a machinery truck issued during that period??

    I think that being so unwieldy to transport, and with other systems coming online at the time, many were delared ‘BER’ and abandoned at RAOC depots overseas. I can attest to at least the 53 found at Malta, all declared BER in 1968, and abandoned at Fort Mosta. All were actually operational, complete with CES, and more importantly, history records, and barrel history books updated. In fact, i know of another 4, also ex Malta garrison which ended up as hard targets on ranges in Libya, south of Ajdabiya, and these 4 must have been placed there pre revolution, since the words ‘Hard target’ were actually painted onto the front shields.

After the sudden demise of one of the founders, Mario Zammit, and various problems with premises, the Malta Historic Vehicle Trust was wound up, and vehicles, as far as I know with regards to these two Pigs, were sold, and have now been restored by the person who purchased them at the time. I have no contact with the current owner, but will attempt to see if pictures can be obtained. A third, was restored by the Malta police, and is in their collection. The fourth was retained for some time by the military, but has not been seen since, and the barracks where it was were demolished in approximately 2013, and no one I spoke to knows where it ended up.

    By the way, whilst attempting to look for some pics of the Malta Pigs, facebook turned up a picture of another Pig, apparently being shipped to Malta in 2016. No idea which one it is, and have never seen it on the island. Pic taken off FB below when said Pig was being onloaded at the shipper’s Essex base. It looks like the Armourgeddon one.

  4. Funny thing, just re read “only owls and bloody fools fly at night”, by Group Captain Tom Sawyer DFC. Apparently the Merlin engined ones, the Mk2, where quite unpopular. The crews were much relieved when the Bristol Hercules powered versions came into service, with much amazement being expressed at the vast increase in power.

  5. Just curious, was the registration actually RN1308, or 13RN08? Not that it really makes any difference, because contrary to the other branches of the MOD, the senior service never even bother to answer queries about their old vehicles. Also, registration numbers tended to get reused upon vehicle disposal just to confuse matters even more.

  6. If it specifies oil, I would use oil. I have lost count of MB/GPW steering boxes, all suffering from the same problem of having grease put in instead of oil. Grease just cannot do the job of keeping the bushes lubricated, it’s too thick.
     

    Whenever one of these vehicles comes into the workshop, the first thing I do is pop the bonnet open and if I see a grease nipple then the bronze bushes and sector arms are usually knackered, unless the substitution is recent, in which case, I still have to remove the steering box, open up, and remove all the grease to save the box.

  7. AEC Matador, with 7.7 litre diesel engine, probably 1940 built, rebuilt by the REME (RD registration) post war and re registered in 1949 as 09RD16. 
     

    There is a link to another Matador (chassis 0853145) from the same contract V3501 being restored on this forum, however this one has a petrol engine. If you scroll down the page you will see some information put by @wally duganregarding contract V3501 finishing in July 1940.

     

  8. Look at the poor thing in the link below (scroll down). Perfect wings, rear side lockers, just left for the vandals to do their worst. Makes me really grit my teeth when someone like Andy here buys a dog of an example to spend so many hours restoring it, whilst others have a good condition example, and just leave it to rot. Simply no justice in this world. Anyone know this one’s history?

  9. @LarryH57 Clive is correct, however, I have encountered boxes like yours. I distinctly remember one vehicle (RAuxAF lhd, 109) that had one like yours on one side, and one as Clive stated on the other wing. I was too busy, grotty and tired to go find a camera. This was pre mobile phone days!

  10. This was the antenna cable stowage box which was installed at military workshops when the Clansman system came in and most vehicles were still set up for the Larkspur equipment. There was an EMER for this, if I remember rightly, and again, I think that @fv1609 had it. 
     

    Later vehicles had the box installed at the factory, with just the lid being on the top side of the wing. The box itself was under the wing.
