Restored by John Moore who tells me that the NMM are going to auction it along with other exhibits to raise some covid survival funds. It also doesn't have a Vokes cutout corner?? Ron

Do we know the frame number. Looks right for a 44 with no steering damper. Has someone maybe filled in that corner of the tank? Or perhaps it's off another model. Are there any signs of two little tapped holes in the middle of the tank near the filler cap?
It would have left the factory in "Service" colour. Most probably Olive Drab but might have been Service Brown,

I haven't been down there for 2-3 years. They normally come up here. If you're a local? You must know them. Malc, Dad Jack and the family have lived there for most of Malc's life I think. Ron

Ah my Niece and her husband live there too Deena and Malcomb. I think their long cottage is the only one with views of the giant? Malc has a Triumph WD. 5SW. Ron

What area are you located Ian. Ron

It's complicated when there are so many gaps in the serial numbers. To start with though, yours is the 2644th bike from that contract, The first batch of numbers total 1199 machines. That means yours is the 1445th from the rest of the numbers. It's a case of sitting at the table with a calculator, pen and paper and nibble away at those other numbers. Then double double check your findings. Ron

I don't think you could use a 1/4" bolt on that clip. Far too big. I've used a 2BA (nut on the outside) Originally it was probably a 3/16" BSC which is near enough the same as 2BA. Ron

There are some prewar G3's listed in O&M but only two for 37 but with no frame numbers listed. I think you would have to ask at Matchless owners club or VMCC. Ron

I'll refit mine without the spacer nut. ☺️ Ron

I await the findings! Steve doesn't come on here lately so it seems I'm missing out again due to FB. 😪 Ron

We have discussed this before. Apparently these center stands were prone to break, plus it was quite awkward to heave the bike up onto it's stand, so a shorter one was produced (Although they seem to have kept the same part number). I can't remember if we decided when the mod took place. I have one of the shorter stands on my WD/C
Apart from the stand itself (which are quite hard to find) Hitchcocks usually have the toggles and springs.

I've emailed the Dorset council history archive to see if they can tell where the motorcycle school training area is (But Covid and all that???)
I've seen mention of Hengistbury Head as an army training area and along with the probable shallow water at low tide in Christchurch harbour and low flat dune beeches at Mudeford ????
Why is nothing written about the locations?

Hmmm! Since Bournemouth is right in the middle, It's difficult to call us South East. Especially as we come under the ancient area of "Wessex". I just looked it up on Wiki and they give our location as South West. I think anyone writing about this area would just refer to it as South. Ron??

Perhaps it's a language barrier? What I call a "Gable end" is the end wall of a building that has the pointy bit for the roof?
I've been looking at images of the RN cordite establishment at Holton Heath. Some similar buildings but I don't think it's there.
I can't find a printed location/address for the RASC training school.

Which picture are you referring to with the gables Jan? The problem is that nearly all of Bournemouth has been rebuilt with high rise student accommodation and apartments. I don't recognize much from when I was a child.
There are buildings in Oxford road that resemble this, but whether they are all new or refurbed, I can't tell from street view.
George Hartwell had his huge 'Rootes' garage in Holdenhurst road that went right through to Oxford Road, I went there lots of times, but got a job to work out were it was now?? Ron

I ride through this area regularly, and have been to a commemoration for those who drowned in the Valentine DD tanks. With the only surviving DD Vanentine

Jan there was another drill hall in Bournemouth that might fit the bill? (Wallisdown wasn't built till the 50's)

South Cliff Road is virtually gone due to road alterations and the construction of the Bournemouth Conference Center (BIC)
But the hotel remains ....Renamed Park Central Hotel......Overlooking the Pier (I have branches all round the coast!!)

We know that lots of pre D Day training took place around Studland and Shell Bay at Poole Harbour. (Fort Henry was built there and used as a safe viewing place for the King-Monty-Winston and Ike.

Maybe this one Jan. I delivered sand and gravel here when it was converted to apartments.

You're probably right Lex. I think I tested mine by using 3BA screws and nuts as a gauge. I certainly wouldn't have anything 5/32". I'll take another look tomorrow to see the fit of 3BA. Ron
