Uh Oh! Well Chris's eyes have picked up everything there. I must admit, I stared briefly at the rear wheel which looked odd and never twigged that the rear stand lugs are missing. I also know nothing about the post war numbering system.
I think it's still a fun bike as a bobber and mod to the "Bar None Club"
Tyler if you are licking your wounds? There is the "Customer protection act" as the bike was clearly advertised as a 1943 WD/CO, so you could be in line for a full refund. The wording of the listing makes me believe that the seller was also unaware of its true identity. Or maybe accept a reduction in price and the WD/C engine thrown in if he still has it.
Worse things happen at sea!! Ron

Also, speedo and speedo drive position, long twist grip and the triangle toolbox. Definitely a non pannier Ariel W/NG. Ron

Good man! I've lost the link to the listing, but from memory, a fun looking "bobber" with most of the correct parts to put it back as it would have been.
BTW, your photobucket link has nothing to look at!

I'm strangely attracted to that "Bar None" bike☺️ Ron

I make the frame a WD/CO from RAF contract S14219 (1943). The engine is from the previous army contract C13870 for WD/COB's (Burman gearboxes fitted)
It's a coincidence as my own RAF WD/CO from that same contract also had a WD/COB engine until I found the correct crankcases from the RAF contract.
No doubt Jan can give you more details on its date and place of despatch. Ron
PS The B&W pic is the only in service RAF CO that I've seen.

Ah Ha! Matchless as I suggested! That clears that up! 🙂 Ron

It's just that there's something strange about the picture with the Sq4. Looks like the ML is superimposed??? Just not heard of Ariel teles during the war.......Perhaps they're Matchless forks??? Ron
-
Well it's a job to understand the Amal numbering system. I can see the milled slot inside the flange though. Ron
-
Well 276/400R is just the mixing chamber number. As far as I'm aware, the finished carb number (276B/1J) would then be stamped on the flange. If you have the chance of a NOS body (preferably with jet block, at a reasonable price? Buy it, as all other new parts are available. Ron

That explains the mud on Jan's Hi Res!
Did Ariel have tele's in 1943? Somehow the picture looks superimposed to me.....Hey Ho! Ron
-
Something odd about that picture Lex! There's a tele fork Ariel Square 4 in the background??? Ron
-
This document that was sent to me by Amal UK should explain it. It seems that very early on the 276B/1J was modified where the drip hole in the jet block was sealed up and moved to the bottom of the flange. My carb has had the conversion but still stamped 276B/1J. Also see a new one that Amal make . Ron

I would try some gentle heat with a butane or acetylene torch. Ron

OK Tom. The head off is best. I just use a vernier. Ron
-
What/how will you use it Tom?
-
Tom can you confirm what you mean by "Timing Gauge" Ron
-
You would be better to start with the British Standard number for "Service Brown"
Colour Range =BS381C
Colour = 499 Service Brown

Dave XG46363 is one of 3000 bikes ordered under army contract S5514 in 1944. I calculate the tank census number to be C5365133.

Ah the picture has come up now. There's no disputing that the HF180 were fitted. But lots of changes....especially with Matchless. We can only make our best judgment from the parts lists (often wrong) and period pictures. This picture of Signalman Tom Hoy on a first contract G3L (same contract as my frame) you can clearly see at least one of the Altette screws.
As an aside, This is from a series of pictures taken by the press for promotional purposes I guess. Tom was well known to me as his son Steve was my business partner for about 10 years.

No picture Lex.
I haven't got a parts list for the 39 G3's but what I have is this.
Contract C5247 (mine and Steve's) Lucas HF1235 fitted
Contracts C6094-7183-8078 Lucas HF1235 fitted
Contract C8947 Clearhooters HF500 fitted (The Big one)
And we know that the Clearhooters HF180 was fitted to at least some non panel tank G3's

I disagree Lex. There are definitely a mix of Clearhooters and Lucas on G3L's as seen in these original pictures with Lucas horns
. The G3 parts lists quote the Lucas 1235 (Altette) and then later the HF500 is listed which is the large Clearhooters with 8 screws that Andrew Honychurch has on his. Then we have factory pictures of none panel tank G3's with the Clearhooters HF180 fitted.
The one you mention on your RE is a Clearhooters HF320 (6 screws) and these are often badged with the Miller logo. There is such a mix up with horns on Matchless's that it's my opinion that they fitted what was the next available from Lucas and Clearhooters. Ron

Yes Philip. It's one of the "Men at Arms" series. Page 11. The thin book is more to do with the uniforms. Ron
