  1. I am trying to get a font that looks about right for the military reg on my Ferret. I am hoping to print it out, then cut it out as a stencile. I have worked out that about 300 point is close enough (that ~ 3inch high), but cannot find a suitable font. Closest I can find is MS UI Gothic, but the letters seem to be a bit wide. I can mess with the number "4", as that seems to be incorrect in any font. Thanks Mick
  2. Jamie, I believe that Rolls Royce issued an update to say the B60 is OK on unleaded, however (and I can hear those "snake oil" shouts right now)... I dropped one of those fuel catalysts (the metal pebbles in a wire bag) into my Ferret fuel tank, and it appears to be running a hell of a lot smoother. I want to do a few tank refills before I am 100% sure, but initial impressions are good. Mick
  3. funny enough, I think Richard Banister was out today dropping my turret off at a courier I am sure both Marcus and Richard would ship international?
  4. Hi, I got mine from Marcus Glenn. Assume this is for a Ferret/B series engine? Mick
  5. Andy, good point! I will just clean the rust off, then leave it to develop a lovely patena I ended up getting a new bare turret from Banisters in the end. The hinges were so bad, and two were broken, plus getting it cleaned up from the fire the donor ferret had just didn't seem worth it...the turret ring and wheels/bearings are in surprisingly good order, and the ring appears to be the difficult bit to get hold of. Cheers Mick
  6. I have taken everything apart, and in the process of cleaning everything up. On the actual turret ring, where the bearing wheels run, I would assume that is not painted? Should it be greased to stop it rusting, or left dry, bare metal?
  7. There is also another new (to me) program on Men and Motors. was on today at 12:30 and 1pm, called Military Motors. Was on last week also, so look like a series.
  8. from what I understand it just the transaction details, not content (you can imagine the amount of storage that would be required to store content!!). So basically just logfiles, most corporates and ISP store logfiles anyhow for diagnostics etc, so its no real change to how things have always been...just the retention is a bit longer (although financials keep data for up to 7 years)
  9. Sorry...just realised after re-reading the manual that I need to remove the plate and ring together by removing the bolts under the turret. Better get the bolts back in teh bearings!
  10. How do I seperate the turret from the turret ring? I have undone the 4 bolts on each of the three bearings, but there seems to be something else holding them. Thanks Mick
  11. It is actually 1/2" hex. I use a hex drive from my socket set...don't think it would be easy to get a 1/2" allen key. Mick
  12. Go to City Road, Bristol, then have a look at the junction with Stokes Croft...look towards the Church Maybe they could use that in an insurance claim?
  13. I have printed that off I thionk the syncronisation is correct, its a NOS distributor with the red paint intact on the fixed points, but I will play with the old one I have just to get my head around that.
  14. Hi Grumpy...reality check I guess all those things I have been told when I was younger are being dashed...I thought that with older engines static timing was a bit hit or miss due to wear, but I can see your point...doing it by ear will almost guarantee hit or miss... So I set the timing mark to 1 or 2 degrees ATDC, and the points should be just opening? Anyhow...I checked the position of the slot at the top of the distributor drive shaft with the timing mark at TDC and it appears to be in the correct position (parallel to engine), so the oil pump appears to inserted OK. One set of points did seem kinda burnt (the ones NOT directly attached to the capacitor) . I checked the continuity between the posts on the two sets of points and there is continuity. I will keep playing.
  15. Hi Tim, yes, but I should be able to advance the timing enough while on tickover to start making the engine change tone or miss? Mick
  16. I have always thought that to adjust timing by ear, with the engine idling, you advance the timing until it just starts missing, then back it off a bit? On a ferret, the two bolts that hold the distributor down, are through two slots in the mounting bracket, with a limited amount of mevement, about 15 degrees? If I advance the timing as far as it will go (rotating the dist anti-clockwise) it never gets to that point where the engine starts to miss or slow down. Could it be possible that the oil pump has been replaced, and has not been put back in correctly? How far out would it be, if the skew gear was 1 tooth out? Do you think I could move all the leads around one place and then fully retard the dist, just to see if that advances the timing enough? I could just get cylinder one to TDC and check the distibutor driving slot on the top of the distributor drive shaft, but my starting handle appears to be the wrong one.
  17. Not sure how you guys ship stuff you sell (or buy!). I have used these quite a bit: http://www.interparcel.com/ They come out way cheaper for heavy/bulky stuff. You enter the weight, dimensions etc and it gives you delivery/courier choices, you book it and they come and collect from your door. The good thing is, if you buy something that you need to collect, you can get the seller to package it up and address it, and the courier company goes to them at a pre-agreed time. Mick
  18. as if by magic!! http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/CVR-W-Fox-Armoured-Car-Gearbox-Transferbox_W0QQitemZ230329878456QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_Cars_Parts_Vehicles_Other_Vehicle_Parts_Accessories_ET?hash=item230329878456&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=66%3A2%7C65%3A1%7C39%3A1%7C240%3A1318 Thought you guys said gearboxes were hard to come by and he has some tyres for sale also!
  19. Towing the Pig downhill no longer seemed like a good idea!!:nono:
  20. Hi Catweazel, what problems did Lord B have with his ferret? I added the fuel catalyst to my Ferret at the weekend, but have not started her up just yet. I'll be interested to see if it makes any difference Mick
  21. I have been following this with much interest. Although my ferret is running a whole lot better than it ever has, it still runs badly, with loss of power when hot. I have noticed the exhaust manifold glows cherry red, and a lot of the things said here sound exactly like whats happening to mine. I am about to order up some of these : http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/JAGUAR-E-TYPE-XJ6-XK-ETC-RUN-ON-95-UNLEADED-UPTO-4200CC_W0QQitemZ180331511857QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM?hash=item180331511857&_trksid=p3911.c0.m14&_trkparms=66%3A2%7C65%3A1%7C39%3A1%7C240%3A1318 I'll keep you posted Mick
  22. I have a few Ferret manuals, both electronic and hard copy. I use the paper copy to browse, then print out the relevant ones when doing the work so I do not get the originals dirty. happy to share. Paperless offices were a fine idea, but will never work....how can you read the manual in the WC on your laptop!!!!
  23. I also use AVG free edition, and agree it works well. I sometimes turn off the content filter in IE to speed things up when I trust the sites I am on (like HMVF ). Other thing I have done is make my PC dual boot, with a linux partition, back all my stuff up to that drive. Never get any viruses etc on Linux, and if all else fails I have all my files.
  24. Thanks Lee...I think my brother's mate has an OA setup, so will see if we can budge it.
