  1. I have used TA paints as I'm pleased with the way their paint sprays, for a primer 2 pack aluminium etch primer (NO its not the poisonous stuff) but it, in my opinion, has to be sprayed on. It sticks like nothing on earth owing to the fact it etches to the aluminium or steel, and is the primer most used by the military.

Then there's a choice of acrylic, enamel or 2 pack epoxy (Again its not the poisonous stuff). 2 pack epoxy is hell to remove but its really hardwearing, on the other hand you cant get it in aerosol, since an aerosol is handy to patch repair or spray small parts.

You have to be careful what different types of paints to mix, for instance cellulose on top of enamel wont go, but enamel on top of cellulose will!

Having tried cellulose it chips too easily.

Can anyone recommend a supplier of the right quality Deep Bronze Green Paint. I've found a several places on the net, all claiming to be the genuine OE article with varying prices.

I don't want to waste money ordering a load only to find it's not that good.

  2. Quite amazed at all the problems changing 2 belts seems to cause, removed old belts (they were in fact new), replaced some fan bolts, replaced the belts with no real problems using the technique employed by Richard - job done.

I will admit to using a large flat bladed screwdriver to do a bit of levering but that was it.

  3. A range of bronze bushes can be bought from http://www.bearingboys.co.uk/

Once pressed in it will of course need reaming.

There's no seal as such. The kick start shaft runs in a metal bush (I can't remember if it's steel or bronze) This bush has probably worn and possibly the shaft also. You can remove the kick start and inner covers with the box in the frame. A good engineer will be able to make a new bush, pressed in and honed/reamed matched to your shaft.........Again from memory, the nut on the end of the main shaft might be left hand thread. Too cold to go to the shed to check my manual. Ron
  4. Hi John,

    Do you mean this?

Hi Diana, we have plenty of poles, but there seems to be a reducing bush that fits in the top of the pole that the beacon fitting goes in to. The big problem that we have is that the current parts list is not illustrated, so we have demanded 1 of each item on the list, except for the beacon as we have a lot of those, then we will try to put it all together. We would like an exploded diagram to check that we have demanded the correct components.

    John.

  5. There is a pole currently on ebay, that pole plugs into the spigot which can be mounted on the vehicle, any spigot l fitting will do, alternatively there is a spigot pole that mounts into a fitting and has cabling from the pole to the spotlight. I do believe I have the fitting that holds that type of pole onto the vehicle body somewhere,

Green Machine Surplus used to have that type of pole complete with cables but it's not currently on their site.

I was wondering if Item 4 was relevant.

Lacock, oh yes please its quite a unique event with a very good public IQ.

  6. If the braking system is 100% then it may not be worth the bother.

100% = shoes all good, cylinders working properly, brake fluid has been changed in last 3 years, all drums are unscored and flexible hoses are in good condition, the master cylinder seals are good and the brakes are properly adjusted.

My own Ferret will stop dead and has no servo.

Hi all, hope everyone had a great Xmas. My question is how easy/simple would it be to install a brake servo into my Mk2/5 ferret. I have looked in to it and seems possible but not sure as to the right way to go about it. I have a bit of room at the rear L/H side of the oil cooler to try and fix a mounting bracket, but then the master cylinder is in the front foot well. Will this mean having to get a brake pipe from the servo to the master cylinder and also replacing the inlet manifold for the servo to connect to. Is it worth all the hassle. I know trying to stop 3tons at speed would take a strong right leg on the exiting brake set up, but I don't think I shall be pushing the old girl to that extreme when up and running. Just that I have a servo that came with the ferret.

    Many thanks in advance

    Steve.

P.S. Hope to see some of the Suffolk members at Adrian Barrell's this Saturday at 2pm. Thank you Adrian for the invite.

  7. You can usually find out quite a lot about a person - more than most would think - if you enter the full address of their website in a whois. Name, address, e-mail and phone number.

PayPal is also very handy too when it comes to getting money back for goods not delivered, or faulty/misrepresented goods.

Any positive feedback on this company??

Well, judging by my current situation I think Classic Military Corner are a bunch of chancers!

Bought two sankey narrowtrack canvasses on the 12th, no sign of delivery, no response to emails or a letter.

Going to try to claim my money back via credit card next!

    Alec.

  8. The diagrams on Andy's site do not show a master switch, I never had a master switch on mine and a lot of people have added one.. It may have been an official mod. Richard Farrant may have any idea if there was a modification.

    Diana

Ahhh, thats interesting that they didn't have a master switch. I have a large twist switch that has 4 terminals on top labeled 1-4. Its the same color as the trans. I also have wires that fit it with labels such as M/S 1, M/S 2, etc. It looks like each battery is terminated to this switch and from there, a 24v feed ties into the sleeve connector on the Distribution Panel.

I am no expert on Ferrets, but this all looks very factory. Even the batt cables with the MS labels are the same type as all the other wires in the harness. Yellow shrink sleeves with the label, armor covered, etc. Are you 100% sure there was never a master switch installed?

**Edit** Here is a link to the exact same switch. Seems like it was in other British military vehicles...

  9. Ferrets never were fitted with a master switch, if its a single pole switch it is likely to be the 24V feed from the battery via the switch. I do believe, from memory, that the terminal with a nut is in fact the earth terminal - but I cant look as my ferret is all sheeted up.

Could someone tell me how the posts on the bottom of the distribution box are set up? One has a sleeve post and I have a wire that fits it coming off the starter(also ties to masterswitch). Then there is the other post on the Distribution box that has nuts on it. What goes on that?? Is it an earth?
  10. As far as I know the only diagram is on the Ferret website and its not logical - by that it shows the lengths of wire and where they go, although the diagram does relate to where items are in the ferret in some sort of physical way.

Your best plan is to work from the front, find the wires that will fit in length from point A to B and then when you run out of wire use new wire for the remainder.

    Diana

So my Ferret came with 2 bins of wires all mixed together and now I have the daunting task of sorting out what plugs in and where. Since this is a huge task I am trying to start simple.

Does anyone have a logical diagram of the wiring from the batteries, to the master switch? I also need the wiring diragram for the distribution box. I have the pigtail that goes from the generator box to the distribution box but I cant read any of the marking on any of the wires.

My goal is to just get enough installed and working so I have a functional master switch, proper connections to the generator box and proper outputs from the distribution box. The gauage and switch panels will be worried about if I get through this :)

  11. A recent article on The BBC website throws all these proposals on deactivation out of the window.

It indicates that most weapons now used by criminals and terrorists are from the Balkan states and one of the weapons of choice (for criminals?) is the handgun.

So whilst The EU is blabbering on about deactivated weapons its failing to look at what live weapons are used and where they come from.

    Diana

Agreed, but that only refers to changes in deactivation standards, not the apparent decision to outlaw existing deactivated Section 5 weapons.

    Andy

  12. You make a very important point, there must be thousand of deactivated weapons in the UK.

I would much prefer they are registered as deactivated and if out of the owners possession through theft or lost that the owner has to report it. I personally would have no objection to having any deactivated weapons I own being registered with the police.

    Diana

If it is deactivated to sec.8 & certified. it is NO LONGER a Firearm, & is NOT a threat!!!!

Or are the Government going to say they were wrong, when they implemented Sec.8 ?............

And we all know they Government NEVER admits it is wrong!!!!.....................

To ban these, they would have to offer compensation. As it was THEY who passed the act in the first place!

They nearly crippled themselves the last time they offered compensation on Handguns.

& definitely could not afford to do that again!.........

The authorites can NOT cope as it is. With renewing Firearm & shotgun Certificates in their system.

Could you imagine the HUGE & MOUNTAINOUS Task of registering HARMLESS deactivated weapons.

And also those mounted in Vehicles?.................Nah! :-X

They cannot cope, & that is THE bottom line! They cannot enforce the VCR act effectively. & releye on Us

To Police it ourselves, which we obviously do.

there are tens of tens of thousands of LEGALY held deactivated Firearms out there. Can you even BEGIN to imagine

The Chaos & problems that registration of HARMLESS lumps of Metal would bring?

There are FAR more pressing & important matters to attend to. than hounding Harmless Collectors & Enthusiasts!!!

  13. Had all this nonsense earlier in the year online with my Ferret, rang them and was told to ignore it. The Ferret does not need an MOT.

    Diana

(At least this time around I did not have go to the nearest Post Office to hand them a V112G which they promptly threw in the bin last year)

Received my V11 Vehicle Tax reminder for the 1943 Chevrolet today. This is the first of renewal after importing and licensing the truck.

It is exempt from goods vehicle testing by virtue of its age and I submitted a signed V112G at time of registration with DVLA.

    Exempt from MoT as pre-1960

Easy I thought, just went on the DVLA system, and it will not progress my renewal because it does not have an MOT certificate.

Close examination of the V11 reminder form highlights the sentence: "This vehicle needs a goods vehicle test certificate from 1/1/2016"

So my question to the forum is, am I missing something new:

"Has there been a change in testing requirements of historic goods vehicles in UK to be implemented from 1st Jan 2016?"

  14. I once bought an SDS hammer drill off ebay, it may even have been a Mikita, it looked well made and did the job quite well, by chance I found a website that pointed out that quite a few people had been electrocuted by this drill and trading standards had condemned the make of drill, a Chinese import.

Horrified I promptly cut off its lead and put a hammer through the drill.

I also bought - again off ebay - a 250 watt soldering iron, upon examination I found that the metalwork was not earthed and the flex grip was next to useless. When I challenged the seller pointing out that this product was illegal he said there had never been a problem, maybe every one of his "problems" was terminal ! (terminally dead)

    Diana

Mikita ?? Is that the fake version of Makita, and generally sold by people touring the country in plain white vans? ;)
