  2. for the smaller vehicles I think a well sorted light bar on the back may well be a recommendation we should all consider...i am certainly thinking about something as the lights on my M62 are awful at the back...I am going to fit some LEd lights and indicators...

but perhaps we should talk about this in another thread, we should keep this thread open for those to pay respects to MARC AND HIS FAMILY...

  5. diesel K60 for instance gets the same mpg as a B81, use gas and you save a fortune and get effectively 5 or 6 MPG..a lot for a stalwart...the problem with the stolly is the amount of friction in the drive train there is a lot...

I am doing a zil 131 to gas this week once that is done will have a look at my B81's...I have 5 of them to convert...2 in stollies 3 spares...

  6. Foden Drops are very pricey at the moment.

    Striker would be nice

I already have a Leyland Daf DROPS, a foden 8 x4 beaver tail GS and a 14 ton drawbar trailer for hauling them about...could do with a low loader likely at some stage in the future but will need a more permanent storage location first.

Other things that interest are a KRAZ, and a BMP..maybe

Not sure I have much choice on my theoretical amount...

    Ferret

    CVRT

    T72

Ural 4320 or a fifth wheel Kraz maybe..

A saladin would be lovely but prices are a bit high at the moment

  7. Okay just supposing one had £50,000 to spend on toys, what should one do...

    this is my list...

    Spartan, Sabre or Scimitar...10-12k

    Samson.

maybe a T72 or T55, maybe an Abbott.

    a Fug (in hand)

got my tatra 813, just got to get it from Scotland

thinking about a chieftain but they rarely come up for sale., and i never have the money when they do.

    anyway serious ideas please...

think I would love to have a TM or an MK,

    just what would one buy..

  8. 1. Check all plugs are firing.

    2. Check timing and points...especially if there is a general sparking or firing fault.

    3. Check fuel supply...fuel pump, is there any fuel in the engine oil, is the pump leaking slightly.

    4. Check the accelerator pumps on the engine, they sometimes fail. Check for dirt in the carburettor, check filters to make sure non are blocked etc etc...

    5. If you know the compression is okay then its unlikely the valves need adjusting but it may be worth doing as they may be just on the edge of out and so when it warms up they dont actually close properly and you will get reduced performance as the engine warms up...

    6. Is the fault a general lack of power or a sudden loss of power, if the latter check the tank for vacuum...ie check if the breather is okay...

If all this fails to identify a problem then you have to start checking for more mechanical faults on the engine itself...

  9. Hi Paulob1.

Not all of the drops vehicles were built in the 1990's. At lest 25 were build before scammells shut in 1988. so it might be an early one?.

    hope this helps

    Clive

Thanks Clive mine is a 1989...so your right...still most of the current regs apply though. It needs a tacho...

    Paul

  10. Taking my drops for mot tuesday , I am told i am best taking it loaded so I have put a cvrt on it .

question once its loaded is there any way to lock the rack on .?? the multi lift switch above the driver in the cab has several positions is one of these a locked position

    thanks dan

    have you fitted a tacho

  11. We always load CVRTs with 4 chains, 2 crossed over on the front towing eyes and 2 on the rear ones. You can see them move down quite a bit on the suspension as you tighten up the chains.

On a wheeled vehicle straps are normally acceptable but on tracked i would not feel safe with anything other than chains. Infact these days I dont feel safe with anything strapped on without chains. My stalwart once stretched some 5 ton strops enough for it to be basically floating free on the back of the truck. Luckily it was in gear and with the hand brake on and I am a very slow driver when loaded but still very very dangerous. I never moved it again without chains...

  12. Morning all,

We have 3/4 project vehicles at the moment and are due to take two of them out to different shows this year. In the past when I've only had one project vehicle I have used Footman James to insure it, think it was about £70 last time. Does anyone know of any other insurers who can do this type of insurance (off the road and public liability cover) and any who can do more than one on the same policy?

    Thanks

    Ed

    i use footmans too

  13. Hi Guys,

thanks for the resposnes; I've got to agree with the last one in particular! Just answer some of the other questions. The engine turns over fine, in fact the oil looks very clean (in fact all the fluids are very clean) so I agree with Richard's assertion that this vehicle has not been used very much since the engine fitting. The big problem is the amount of corrosion and sand everywhere.

Anybody know how to get to the fuel pump without removing the engine?!!!

Is there anything special that I should be careful of when removing the cylinder head???

    Many Thanks

    Todd

get a manual, there isnt much of a problem but why do you want to take the head off, the plugs should come out with a bit of effort and unless you intend or think you have dropped material into the head she should be fine. Cant imagine the engine will have suffered much as its pretty well sealed up and if she is turning freely you cant have much to worry about there...

The hint was I might just have a B80 cylinder head or two or three spare. I certainly have two B81 heads as well, think they are a simple bolt on replacement and would improve power but not massively so. The B81 has a number of other changes to make it more powerful...but the head would help I understand, maybe increase power to around 210 or even 215 bhp over the 190 ish of the B80, just a guess...
