Removing those pins is hard work!... but it is perfectly possible with the arms still on the vehicle. I've done it on the petrol Spartan we had. You'll need to make up an extractor, I borrowed one made by another forum member for the same task. You will also require a very long breaker bar. I think we had to use one that was 900mm long or longer to get enough torque to pull the pins through. The new inserts will go in much easier, I think we knocked them in with a hammer and block of wood.
If you do have the time/space and a press it might be easier to remove them from the vehicle and do it that way.

Steve,
I would be interested if you decide to sell it. I need one for my GPW.

From Wikipedia:
1 Air Mobility Wing - The 1 AMW is a specialist unit of the RAF trained in the loading and unloading of transport aircraft. This unit operates in conjunction with the Hercules detachment.

It's worked very well on the 2 tanks I've done with it.

Thank you and I will sit down when I go to ebay but I will check some of the trimmers in this country to see if there is any thing close, I will go with the sand and black but is it just standard paint with out luster.
Do you think it is currently sand and back? Because the photo shows a faded nato green and black vehicle. The mod infra red reflecting paint fades quite quickly to a colour which can look grey or sand.
The paint colours are listed in BS381C as NATO Green shade 285 and light stone shade 361.

Hi Rebecca and congratulations on your military Land Rover. Before you start bolting guns and antennas on to it you should find out what you actually have.
I believe you don't have a true military land rover but more a civilian model purchased by the mod and possibly fitted with military towing equipment. What makes me say this is the 5 door station wagon and emerald green colour. It is currently NATO green and not emerald green, which is a civilian colour, but one the MOD chooses when they buy land rovers which are not destined for use on the battlefield. 99.9% of military land rovers are only very basic 3 door vehicles. Have a look at http://www.mod-sales.com to get an idea.
If you look on Google for a Land Rover vin checker website you can decode the vin number and see what body type it had. You can also get the MERLIN database report from the MOD using a freedom of information request. Try the search box on here and you should get the email address. Once you have the report we can tell you where it's been and who had it.

If you have to pump the brakes it will fail an MOT!

It's been ages since I got to spend any time on this one, but this weekend was a bit of a mixed bag. The brakes are now sorted, everything electrical seems to work ok and so we put the drivers seat in, bulkhead on etc. Also fitted the turret ring. It was a bit tight without the turret on, with it on I can't turn it at all. It needs to come of for further fettling but for now the turret is bolted on. I took it for a thrash about and it has developed a clicking noise from the clutch at idle, seems to run and drive fine otherwise.
Looking much better with the decks on!

Paul,
What are the rubber bits on the sprocket carriers like? Do they look like 50p coins or are they still round?

Long has the head and short doesn't.
Seems like a lot of money for a pile of junk, it doesn't sound like there's one complete one between them. When I needed a piston I got it from xk engineering, but banisters probably have them too.

Hi Ian, welcome to the forum. I just bought a '43 GPW in worse state than yours, but it's a long term project. Looking forward to seeing photos.

Duncan,
If the date of manufacture is already on the V5 then I don't see why you have to prove it again! My Sabre was built in 1973, to make it historic I just took the v5 to the post office with the taxation class box in section 7 filled in as historic. Walked out with a free tax disc and got a new v5 a few days later in the post.

You might want to try one of these rather than a drill on the next seized bolts:

I bought my 110 Wolf down for the day on Saturday. Never made it to the show before, I'll try and bring something armoured next year!

Watching him lose control and go across the road and take out the hedge on the other side was pretty scary. I was driving the Spartan behind it in the video. He was all over the road, no track pads, no number plates and it looks like no drivers seat!
-
Not if you had to follow him!

Are the numbers on both types the same? Fox uses the same brakes.

This one just sold in the US. I have no idea if 00GM81 is a valid or correct reg#. It looked nicely complete.
It's a Belgian vehicle painted to look like a picture in a book. VRN is incorrect and it sold to a forum member.

Charlie,
Have you got the Merlin report for it yet? That might answer some questions.
