Lee,
I have the original sales brochure, issued before it was taken into service. It's definitely called the 'Daimler Fox' in there!

Richard,
To be honest I don't know, it's not my site. I thought the turrets were built by Alvis though?

Technically Leicester isn't part of the East Midlands MVT, but Simon does have a Jeep and his email is simon.king@nhs.net

Lee,
The guy who maintains the website is called Gavin. He has just bought a Fox too. I'm sure he'll get round to it soon.

The Alvis Fighting Vehicle Society website now has a vehicle register, which includes all the vehicles produced by Alvis. http://afvsociety.co.uk/ If you've got one, you might as well add it.

Looks like that Stuart needs a new set of tracks!

Jack,
This site is excellent if you're interested in our history post WW2.

Postwar vehicles were in service for a long time, Ferrets were in service for over 40 years, 432s will have been in service for over 60 years when they are finally scrapped. In this time many thousands of people will have used them, even lived in them out on exercises or in small wars and peace keeping duties. Most of them have seen much more active service than wartime vehicles, anyone who thinks they are not worth preserving obviously didn't think it through properly.
I have found when I've had the Ferret, Spartan or Fox at a show (or even at home when working on it) that a lot of former crewmen always like to stop and chat about them. They all have stories, I met a bloke who froze when he saw the Pig we had. He wouldn't go in it and it took him a few minutes to finally talk about it, last time he was in one it had been petrol bombed and he was on fire. Another man used Ferrets in Malaya and had photos and stories of his time out there. We put him in touch with the owner of his old Ferret.
I think the 1940s thing is mostly an excuse to dress up and have a party.
Bedford RLs do turn up on ebay quite often, but usually painted in stupid colours and full of holes. You could of course buy a RLH, Withams have hundreds of them and can't give them away!

Jack,
There are plenty of us with post war vehicles, but have a look through the show listings that are produced every year. Wartime weekend here, 40's dance there etc. There are a lot of shows out there, but those of us who own something other than a jeep or a GMC are usually not invited.

The best way I've found to do this is:
Get some strong wire, that thick stuff they uses in houses is good. Cut a length, and twist the ends together making a long loop. Grip the twisted end in some mole grips, put the other end of the loop on the spring and pull.

20mpg maybe, but I'm sure I get more Smiles Per Gallon in my vehicles

Richard,
I shall have to check, but the one we put in the Fox seems to be working fine. I bought a spare, so I'll check that one.

I did wonder why these servos should be stored vertically, yet they're always installed horizontally. It also seems a bit daft to put the storage instructions on the servo, in a sealed box, and not on the outside of the box!

There are a lot of these knocking about since Jacksons:

Is this the same as the Humber Clive? I know these fit Ferret and Fox. I had to change one after accidently connecting it up to the heater outlet on a CVRT J60

Matt,
Was this the trailer Withams had on ebay? I was bidding on it but it went a bit too high for me! I have a copy of 13953, I may be able to scan some pictures for you. My comms trailer was originally a relay station and spent its life at the army apprentice college before being converted to an ABDR and sent to RAF Coltishall. The chassis and underside are like new and I don't think it had spent any time outside, it was still in deep bronze green albeit rather faded and patched over. I have the poles for one of the side tents but no canvas. If you find any spare tent parts let me know!

I agree with the Ferret idea. We started off with an Austin Champ, which was on the road, and quickly moved to a Ferret and then on to heavier stuff. My Ferret was our first restoration project, it was very enjoyable and we didn't have too many problems. There are loads of spares around, they are great to drive, small and compact and there are plenty about. At the moment there seems to be loads for sale, recently a nice mk1 was on ebay at £3500 with no reserve, and did not get any bids. I am only 23 and so can't drive heavy vehicles but a Ferret Mk 1 is under 3.5 tons so no problems there. Oh yes and it's made of real metal, not like those tin can GMCs!

Everything to restore it can be bought from Gary's Halftrack parts in the US. If you look at his vehicles for sale, the one in the photo here looks in pretty good nick!

Saracen tyres are 11.00 x 20 for Mks 1, 2 & 3 and 12.00 x 20 on the Mks 5 & 6. If you have runflats on already then you will have the inserts, but they aren't really run flat inserts, they are just to stop the tube from rubbing on the tyre and pinching when assembled.
Chris

Vor,
I haven't seen any runflat tyres for sale, but they were not always used. You may be able to find the Michellin XL tyres a bit easier. Try the ex-mod truck dealers.
Also make sure your Fox is listed on my Fox website! http://www.cvrw.co.uk

Berni,
Yes theres still plenty of free food and drink on offer, and some unusual stuff to eat too! I saw the old military vehicle area, this year it was full of animals. I don't know if the weather put people off, but it was a good show despite the rain as there's so much other stuff to do.

Berni,
I hadn't been to Stoneleigh before, but aparently they moved all the vehicles last year into the spot furthest away from the main entrance, which is where we were this year. There were only around 50 vehicles, mostly quite packed together. There was loads of free space, which was annoying as we were told the show was fully booked. We only managed to get a pass because someone we knew wasn't able to take a vehicle. I did not see any moles....

We got a bit wet...

Those of you who own more than one vehicle will know what an achievement it is to have them all attend at least one show a year. We have 4 vehicles, having just sold one, and all of them have been to at least one show this year!
The Fox has been under restoration for the last four years, and after not making it to two shows this year finally made it to a quiet and wet Stoneleigh.

Leicester and Ansty would be under the South East Midlands area.
