  1. There is another side to this subject and that's the daft things some MV owners say about their own vehicles! to name a few I've heard... "Yeah it went ashore on D-Day" "It's the only one ever made/only one left" "I fully rebuilt it,it's completely original" It's hardly surprising that members of the public ask daft questions when you consider the cr&p they are fed in school,on TV and through video games concerning the second world war.
  2. Tony, It's probably best to contact the RAF Museum with your question. As you mention you have found parachutes there is the possibility the site could also contain remains of the crew so I would talk to the staff at the JCCC Historic Casework section at RAF Innsworth and the Air Attache at the British Embassy in Paris. Matt.
  3. I was hoping someone might be able to ID this switch/button? it is being used as a horn button but is not standard to the vehicle it is fitted to. Is it British or American?? Thanks, Matt.
  4. Another factor is parts are pretty easy to find(both genuine and repro) and not too expensive.
  5. Good to see the tail of the Sterling which crashed on Mickle Fell is in good hands.
  6. Looks like an International to me,maybe a T-9? it has the road type track pads as used on the T-9's fitted with Trackson swing cranes used in bomb dumps by the USAAF.
  7. I have yet to see wartime colour photos or film of RAF vehicles painted blue during WW2,most were either matt green or camo. Matt.
  8. I was just thinking about how many Cletrac's actually survive of the 8,000 or so built? I wonder if we could start a database of survivors as has been done for Dodge WC's,CCKW's,Shermans etc? there seems to be little information and production data on Cletrac's and maybe such a database could help identfy detail changes etc. Matt.
  9. Thanks for the suggestions. I will PM you and update the thread in the archaeology section as we are going rather OT!. We have covered a lot of ground on the project since 2007 and a lot of work has been done "behind the scenes". Matt.
  10. Hi Adrian, There are several factors which effect when it will happen, but mainly it depends on finding a suitable "home" for it,which in the UK really boils down to either the IWM or RAFM,both of whom have expressed an interest but the problems of space and funding have to be overcome. Fortunately it has remained covered since 2007 so is hopefully safe enough until the time is right!. Matt.
  11. I agree, whether it's vehicles or aircraft which have lain undisturbed where they came to rest it seems such a shame that in the rush to recover them all too often details are lost before they can be properly recorded.
  12. Thanks Guys. Mark please keep me posted on the tracks and how much you will be looking at per set. Paul I'll send you a PM! I'm interested in your lights. I haven't got it home yet, hopefully by the end of January but it depends on the guy who is transporting it,and to some extent the weather. Cheers, Matt.
  13. Ok,not as many Jeep pics as I thought I'm afraid, just this one. And another showing a Dodge Command Car which was taken by the same photographer,Capt.F.S.Taylor who was the 384th Base Security Officer, however the Dodge carries the markings of the 427th BS,303rd BG. You might have seen these photos elsewhere as some were published during the war.
  14. Sorry I have not had time to scan the pics but will do so as soon as I get chance. Matt.
  15. Hi Pete, If you have the chassis number it might be worth checking on the G503 database? if exported as Richard suggests it's new owner might have entered it. I know what you mean about the regret of selling certain trucks, for me it's the D15 but I know it's in safe hands! I still have the original block here which I could bring down if you still want it?. All the best, Matt.
  16. It depends on the type of information you are seeking. I have a collection of original photos taken by an officer of the 384th which show some vehicles in detail, only one Jeep though. Vehicles used by the Eighth Air Force are a particular interest of mine and I will help if I can. Regards, Matt.
  17. Hi Neil, The tracks are a problem as they have not been produced since WWII and they are not shared with any other vehicle as far as I know,Halftrack tracks though similar are shorter. It would seem that for Cletrac owners there are only two options, hope a stash of NOS tracks is discovered(unlikely!) or if enough interest/demand they are reproduced, but with relatively few Cletracs in preservation the demand is never going to be huge. Maybe Paul can add to this? Matt.
  18. I'm looking for suggestions or recommendations for getting a 7 ton tracked vehicle from Lincolnshire to Barmouth,West Wales. The tractor is a non runner but rolls freely so the transporter would need to have a winch. There is no big hurry to get it moved but sooner rather than later would be good. I already have a quote of £1 per mile round trip which seems pretty good but just asking on the offchance someone has a better idea!. Thanks, Matt.
  19. Thanks Lex,a very nice looking truck indeed!.
  20. Hi Gordon, Good to hear from you! thanks for the suggestion I will contact them,I don't expect it to be cheap but hopefully worthwhile! I had to move house and sell some of my vehicles(the D15 went) and put others into storage but I'm just now starting to get back on track. Cheers, Matt.
  21. Hi, I want to get my Dodge engine professionally rebuilt and I'm looking for recommendations for somewhere to get this done(in the UK). Thanks! Matt.
  22. Although built in Canada the Dodge D15 and D60 are without doubt British vehicles, they were built for and mainly used by British units. The truck in Nick's photo is in fact a D15 which had been extended by a post war user, now in the process of being restored to original spec last I heard.
  23. Hi Mark, The military front bumper on my 2A has reinforcing plates welded into it behind the front hitch mounts so I assume S3 would have too. Matt.
