Daimler Dingo Wheels and Tyres

Hi All,

Our museum has a Mk 3 Dingo, running solid tyres. They are in very good condition, but we're thinking of taking her on a road trip next year (~2900 km) and should probably either have a spare set available, or change it over to pneumatic wheels and tyres.

Is anything available for the Dingo anymore? They're a bit of a strange size.

Also, has anyone had any experience in dropping the front driveshafts and running one around as a RWD?

Cheers,

Terry

Hi Terry,

The tyres are not exactly solid, they are open inside once off the rim and have very thick walls and bead spacer, this allows some flexibility. I found tyres in the USA of the same size used on pickup trucks, but with a highway tread. For running around on the road they are excellent if kept pumped up to max pressure rating. There is not such a problem with wind up in Dingos as they are light enough for the tyres to slip when driving normally on the road and with the small footprint they make, hence when using pneumatics, you keep them hard.

Thanks Richard,

Do you know the type/brand of the American tyres? If they are pneumatic, we will need different rims, as ours have no allowance for valve stems.

Cheers,

Terry

The were made by STA, Specialty Tire of America and were normal pneumatic, 7.00-18 and you will need a gaiter / flap as well. The rims do have holes for valves in, never seen them without. (could be wrong though). The original tyres were runflats with tubes, then later on the RFE1 tyre as you current have, were fitted.

These have been fitted to a dingo and are the best modern alternative currently availible

However a word of warning. Getting the original tyres off the rims after they have bonded with 60 years of rust can be problematic.

One set i did seperated from the rims with little effort but the others were well and truly welded together & stuck.

The tyre company used a hydraulic press to push out & remove the rear half of the rim and as a result warped the centre so that it no longer ran true. 2 out of the 4 rims were therefore wrecked.

in such a case the only way to get the tyre off is to cut the original tyre in 2 and peal it off the metalwork.!

As original tyres are now vary rare its not ideal.

hope this helps
