0 ArtistsRifles
Lets see how the memory works after 30 years: A rifle is a firearm designed to fired from a shouldered position which can discharge a bullet through a rifled barrel longer than 16 inches. The spiral parallel grooves (rifling) in the bore impart spin to the round, providing stability and extended range. Rifles can be either bolt action (SMLE Mk IV), semi-automatic (L1A1 SLR) or automatic (FN) whereas a carbine is a shortened form of the rifle that has a barrel less than 16 inches in length, and is used, typically, by those who require a weapon for self-defense and emergencies. Carbines usually tend to be semi-auto and are inferior to the rifles in most ways.
0 Karoshi
So how come the M1 Carbine has an 18" barrel ? By definition it isnt what it is!
0 AlienFTM
The German Kar 98 K rifle was in fact a Karbine, 1898, Kurz or SHORT carbine dating from an 1898 design. The Sterling SMG was available with a designation of CARBINE, stamped on the magazine housing (I held one in Basic Training in 1975). I guess you could define a carbine as being anything in between!
