mcspool Posted March 22, 2009 Share Posted March 22, 2009 Guys, The earlier thread was about PSP or Marsden matting, this was used for temporary runways. I think what Gary is referring to are sand channels, as seen fitted to the sides of this Canadian Military Pattern truck. The steel sand channels were designed and used specifically for crossing soft sand patches with vehicles. There also were canvas sand mats, designed and used for the same purpose. These were widely used in desert areas, not only by special forces, and were part of the standard vehicle kit for many decades (Ferrets and Dingos had a sand channel fitted to the front). Sand channels and sand mats have a totally different purpose from the American PSP / Marsden matting (of which the British equivalent was SMT or Square Mesh Track).
