Less than a year after the Americans detonated their first Hydrogen Bomb the Soviets explode a 400 Kiloton device. The Russian device is built up of layers of Uranium and Lithium Deuteride, A hydrogen Isotope.

 

Although the yield is 30 times the bomb America dropped on Hiroshima, the device is very compact.

 

The small size and ease of delivery of the Russian "Layer Cake" compared to the American Hydrogen Bomb, leads to another escalation in the arms race as America is again playing Catch-up.
