Winterised Lightweights

Has anyone on here got any info on winterised Lightweights please? Apart from the Artic heater, did they have snow blinds fitted to the windows or any additional insulation? If they had blinds fitted, how were they secured and what were they made of?

Sooo many questions I know, but I cannot find any info on this subject.

Thanks

Nige

Tony,

Thanks for that link. Some good shots of the 109. How were the blinds attached to the vehicle? On my 90, they use turnbuckles and velcro, but it's not clear on those pics.

PS I think a few from ARRSE have just found your site judging by the guestbook :-(

Posted on EMLRA but may as well add them here as well. Don't know how front blind would be fixed to a softtop, on a hardtop it's bolted through just above the windscreen. Some blinds are just weighted, others secured with popper.

Not sure what the original fixings for the blinds were, they had mostly been replaced with large headed coach bolts. There are no blinds for the rear quarter windows as these are lined on the inside and painted over externally.

Hi Sean, I see the springs have risen about 3 inches after the paint came off. The tubes that went from the heater, which is bettween the front seats, went to vents above the windscreen and the drivers window. None above passengers window. The tubes in use and all the others I've seen were a silver flexible tube such as used in civiy heaters.

We used LWB FFR landrovers on our unit, with arctic kit. The blinds are as above, canvas, which rolled/buckled when not used.

The heater was quite a large affair, situated where the middle seat would be, with a metal pipe running through the bulkhead at floor level on passenger side with a large tap valve for turning off the hot water supply to the heater.

From the heater box ran ducting hose (It was a black cardboard type bendy tubing) up to the roof, attached to the "Dexion" which went over each door window to a vent and to the front screen each side having its own vent, this was to keep the windows clear, it would keep them warm enough for snow to slide off, when driving, the heater motor been reasonably powerful.

We used them in Norway, our role was to support the Harrier force. In the event it all went pear shaped, potentially we could of been hitting ruskie from Scandinavia.

If anybody knows of a landy 109 FFR with hardtop 17KA50 i would be most interested!!

Hi Nige. I have come to believe that the pipes affixed above the windscreen and the side windows were for snow blind and/or camo. I have traced the lightweight back to all but the first owner after demob and they all say the pipes were already there. I have tried to contact the 212 about this and they have not answered. Mine was based with the 212 Battery RA (V) in Scotland for its military life. Good luck, Bil
