Rick W
While scraping some layers of paint of the jeeps bonnet trying to find the number, I had a quick scrape underneath, and found the following WNR 800534 L -anyone any ideas what this relates to? Stencilled in white on the original paint.

Rick, You will find these numbers on a lot of British vehicles in 1950's era, there has been specualtion that it could be a rebuild serial number, or something to do with the Vehicle Storage Depots. I have seen them on Austin K2 ambulances, Champs, Austin K9, etc.
Rick W
Thanks for the ideas. I would be interested to know if anyone who does have one of these numbers painted underneath the bonnet, and they have a service history card, if the numbers tally up to anything on the service card. That would surely give the answer.
Rick W
Mystery solved (I think!). Further scraping below that number I found B380 stencilled. That tallies up with the overhaul depot number B380 on the chassis plate. So it must be a work reference number.
Rick W
Just a quick photo of the number after the scraping back of the layers of paint. http://i117.photobucket.com/albums/o72/rik242_2006/jeeplog007.jpg[/img]
