Jack
One hell of site - those Thor missile launch pads at Polebrook look interesting - wasn't Polebrook 8th Air Force?!
Rick W
That question would have to be answered with more kmowledge than my feeble mind! Guest matt
Jack,Polebrook was indeed Eighth Air Force, home to the 351st Bomb Group,1st Air Division with B-17's. The four squadrons were the 508th,509th,510th and 511th. The airfield is now mostly owned by Lady Miriam Rothschild, with the hanger belonging to David Gower's company Airfield Warehousing(no not THE David Gower ). I wrote to Lady Rothschild several years ago and she gave me permission to look at the surviving WW2 buildings on the estate, unfortunatly most are in poor condition including the one containing the mural of a 40's jive band. One of the worst air crashes of WW2 in Wales happened a couple of miles from me,a 509th BS-351st BG B-17G from Polebrook hit a mountain in poor weather killing all twenty on board. They were on their way home to the States exactly a month after the war ended. Matt.
