A woman soldier has made history by becoming the first female Beefeater at the Tower of London.

Moira Cameron, 42, from Argyll in Scotland, beat five men to secure the coveted post as a Yeoman Warder and become the first female in the role in the guards' 522-year history.

She appeared at the Tower for the first time, dressed in the uniform for her present role of Warrant Officer 2 - the second highest non-commissioned officer rank - as a chief clerk in the Adjutant General's Corps in the 145 Brigade.

When she takes up her new job in the summer she will be measured and fitted for her £1,000 uniform.

Miss Cameron will wear the blue dress uniform on a day-to-day basis, saving the more recognisable red costume for special occasions

In her new role she will have to become well-versed in the history of the Tower in order to give visitors a guided tour.

Her other duties will include making sure the Crown Jewels are kept safe and secure.

Miss Cameron, who joined the Army at the age of 16, has spent the required 22 years serving in the Forces to become eligible for the prestigious position.

As well as her salary of around £20,000, she will have use of a subsidised apartment in the Tower itself.

New Yeoman Warders are sworn in on Tower Green after the Tower has closed to the public, with an oath of allegiance that dates back to 1337.

Following the ceremony, as is traditional, Miss Cameron's health will be toasted by the Chief Yeoman Warder.
