robin craig
There is a mast called a RADIAC mast for the turret of both CVRT + W vehicles that mounts on top of the turret. While it is a genuine bit of kit they seem to have seldom been mounted when looking at "In Service" pictures. Can anyone expand as to why they are not seen fitted or when they were etc? Thanks R
0 DMC 7RU
According to the EMER: RADIAC SYSTEM The system provides for the detection and measurement of the radiation dose rate, and monitoring of the radiation hazard to the crew , while reconoitring in areas which may be contaminated by nuclear burst. The equipment comprises external (this might be the mast) and internal detectors, a control and display unit and interconnecting harnesses. 0 Bazz
In all the time I served we never used the Radiac mast. The only thing we carried as part of the CES was the protective sleeve that mounted to the roof of the turret. they were only issued as CES on CVR(T) as they had a NBC pack and CVR(W) didn't. They were designed to be used during NBC recces to detect and plot areas of radiation.
0 robin craig
This is all interesting. Thanks for the replies I am now getting more of a picture. What kind of era did you carry the sleeve then? Did it go in a particular place, as per a manual or was it lashed anywhere? R
0 Bazz
I served on CVR from 76-98, we mainly left the thing in camp when we were out on exercise.
0 robin craig
So, it was just an unloved and never used piece of kit that just took up space and was left behind if given the chance. It's a wonder you didnt call it a Rupert Mast! Thanks for the info. R
0 biscuits_brown
Did anyone ever have/see the actual detector unit? Was it a variation on the PDRM82M portable meter?
