Scammell S24 or Leyland Landtrain

Grumpy

Question

One of the projects in at the moment is a Leyland Landtrain that we were going to break for parts for the S24, but to be honest it a bit good to break. Problem is it appears to be more Scammell than Leyland; in fact it appears to be a Scammell with a Leyland cab on.

Question is, does anybody know where and if the VIN number is stamped into the chassis to see if it ties up with the Leyland Vin plate in the cab? Had a quick look and its not in an obvious place.

Hi Grumpy.

Scammells all so built the Landtrain at Watford for Export and the UK so it

could be one of them. There were some hybreeds built which had S24 and Landtrain merged together. Have you got any photos. As I may have the vehicle in my Scammell photo history Docs.

Thanks Clive found the number and it’s a Scammell number not Leyland and doesn’t match the Leyland Vin plate in the cab. I suspect it has had a front ender at some point as the front body work is Leyland including the twin air filters, single radiator etc. It’s also got the Cummins 290 with a ZF box. However it’s the 30 ton Scammell bogie on the back, Scammell steering, the brakes are also piped up Scammell and the chassis number is Scammell so it looks like it is an S24. Good news really because the chassis is a bit straighter that the other one.

Thanks again for your help

No problem mate.

May as well use the old scammell knowledge some were.

Glad to be of help. We produced some scammells with the landtrain front end

and the 30 t rear bogie. I have some photos but not sure how great they are

as It's a long time ago and they were scanned from the original photos, so they

may not be that good. I'll have a look.

Best Regards

Hi Grumpy.

Found this Scammell Landtrain in the photos i have. This was one

of the test and evaluation vehicles we had on trials for months.I

Believe that we built some for the Faulklands for building the new

Airport back in the early 80's
