  1. Thanks for the warning - I would leave the job to experts!
  2. Any resemblance of the person in the cartoon, to any MV owner or WPR staff member is purely co-incidental
  3. I could keep the old leafers under the double bed. The Mrs would not mind! The reason I asked is that if I take something off the Lwt that is repairable I like to repair it and have as a spare or even re fit it to keep the originality. Obviously some items just wear out but others like my speedo were repaired and kept. I suppose in 100 years someone might be grateful for these springs but my great grandchildren won't appreciate storing such 'tat'
  4. I am having the leaf springs changed on my Lwt, but I wonder if the old Lwt leaf springs any use to anyone? They are the originals from 1980 but are a bit flat so the vehicle doesn't ride quite level and this was mentioned on the MOT.
  5. I saw this cartoon of how people treat the 'conveniences' that the organizers so kindly provide at shows! All those years we went and moaned about the show and now nothing, and nothing in sight for 2021 to cheer us up!
  6. With computerised MOTs and sales data you cannot escape the details as in days of old, such as the time, I took my Morris Ital for a tyre change at Flit Quick, and in the process was told my shock absorbers were shot. Are you sure I said, so the manager was summoned for a second opinion. Yes they are he said, so I wipped my guarantee of 10 months ago and had them changed for free. Roll on 30 years and took a VCR for repair and repair man said it was under 5 year guarantee from Argos, who gave me £400 to spend in store as VCRS no longer available! Well done Argos. Sorry a bit off topic. I will share the response to my MOT complaint once I get it. As for the MOT station in question, despite having done loads of landrovers, I have suffered from testers unable to turn the lights on and a few years back they were to fail the Lwt as they could not find how the horn worked. Luckily I was on hand on both occasions to stop them getting to their online system!
  7. Might Clive Elliott who posts on here have anything, for this topic or the related one on the dismountable rear bodies in 8cat FFW bodies?
  8. I still fail ( pardon the pun) why giving false warning helps the motorist ?
  9. I think I will report them! It is strange that the MOT station does not do any work on vehicles; just testing and if they were in league with the LR Garage up the road its odd that the LR garage dismisses such advisories, if they check each vehicle as part of the service they do, after getting the MOT beforehand. Could it be arse covering by the MOT station?
  10. Has anyone on here complained about their MOT test station? My recent and previous MOT states as advisory that the brake pipes are corroded, covered with oil and dirt. The first time I saw this I was mystified as a) I could not see any signs and also b) because the brake lines were recently changed to copper and brake cylinders were checked. When I took the Landrover in for this years service I mentioned to the LR garage (that doesn't do MOTs) about the advisories on the MOT and they said that the MOT station puts this comment on EVERY MOT for the Landrovers they take there. I'm thinking that this cannot be right as if an idiot crashed in to me, their legal team might claim I was not road legal. Also putting such advisories on every MOT is not correct?
  11. A small cross is also associated with the civilian organisations that used the K2 to support the evacuations of casualties that were flown in to uk airfields and the USAAF, and I guess by late 1945 there were plenty of spare vehicles after the Yanks went home.
  12. So when do you suggest I go to the PO with my V5 - Sometime after New Year 2021?
  13. I'm sure there are MV owners on here who have succeeded in getting Historic Status for their vehicles, especially Jeeps of dubious parentage so I propose to not leave this matter till W registered vehicles from 1991 are 40 years old. Also any half wit from the Ministry will know Land Rover stopped making Lightweights in late 1984
  14. Thanks for this ; so for clarity 1 need to order 10 x 548205 and 2 x 569746. I have the correct springs and bolts and nuts
  15. Looking at the L:wt Parts catalogue, it suggests I need 12 of these items - Correct?
  16. Also Fulltilt rather than waste a new post on leaf spring bushes, are the Britpart ones at say £1.60 each just good as the Genuine LR ones at c.£6 each. I'm having the 'leafers' done soon on my Lwt as well as the tyres? I am told I need 4 x 548205 but strangely the Lwt Parts catalogue gives 242825 as the part number and three are needed for each leaf spring so that's 12!
  17. My dilemma is that I want to get the wheels and tyres off my Lwt and have the rims sand blasted and also check out what age and reference they are. All of them are riveted design. But equally I do NOT want to have the Lwt jacked up on all sides, like you see on axle stands - for the safety of others in the house. So I guess I could buy two Land Rover wheels with tyres off eBay and stick them on the vehicle while I take the two front wheels and a spare to be sand blasted / cleaned up, checked and then fitted with tubes and tyres. My preference is to get the job done in one go - not three wheels first and two later. Also I'd rather not buy some unroadworthy sh** from someone off eBay, so I may as well buy some new rims from Jaguar Land Rover that offer 231601-C for £100 plus VAT and plus delivery. I care more for safety than whether JLR weld them. Not having any sand blasting done ever, would they do three wheels while I wait or in a day? Middlesex, where I live covers a wide area to west and north of London some of which is not 'local' to me so I need to find a sandblaster fairly near I can trust to do a good job.
  18. On a Land Rover 5" x 16" rim on offer as 231601-C what is the significance of the C. Will they take a 6.50 x 16 tyre assuming I can source a Goodyear lookalike or take a 7.50 x 16 Deestone / Security tyre as my default, both with tubes? Often I see these 231601 referred to as Series 1 - I guess to increase the price. But irrespective of date of manufacture am I safe to assume they are still OK for my Series 3 1980 Lwt. There are some pretty rusty examples on internet so what to watch out for ?
  19. Does that suggest it has become historic status?
  20. Seb, you might like to mention to whom it was sold or at least the area of the UK or World in which it was to be kept after it was sold!
  21. So from what I gather, no point in sending an MOT cert as these are online anyway and I can only stop paying Vehicle Tax after 1st April 2021. My MOT is good till November 2021. So I guess my trip to the Post office can be in March 2021 and I will have to wait to hear from Gov before I cancel my Direct Debit.
  22. Lucky for me, my 1980 'HG' registered GS Lightweight is now 40 years old and I have just had it pass its last MOT, though an advisory on the tyres So I thought I'd check the GOV. website regarding Historic status. However, it makes no mention of timing, so do I have to wait till 1st January 2021 or do they appreciate a bit of notice, if I go to the Post Office in December? Also it is W registered so will the letter I have from defunct Army Museum in Beverley suffice to show it was built in Oct 1980? It has no material changes; same engine and gearbox and chassis! I pay my Lwt vehicle tax by Direct Debit so I was going to cancel it after the last day of December.
  23. Ruxy, On the Lwt reference site (below) you helped with, it also mentions STC 3402 which are welded wheel rims for a Lwt; surely these came after 231601 riveted ones ; so does my late 1980 GS needs these. I'm not sure of the pedigree of those fitted to my Lwt at the moment, so it may be best if I source and fit replacement wheels and once painted have new tyres fitted to them and have the old ones cleared and repainted. One appears to have been white or cream coloured before so no military and many coats of NATO Green paint over matt black on two of them when cast! http://www.land-rover-lightweight.co.uk/LRL Wheels.html I'm still trying to make sense of the tubes to fit if I find a set of 6.50's or the 7.50 Goodyear lookalikes?
  24. So that's 26lb front and 31lbs rear once I can find some of these pesky 6.50x16 with the exact same Goodyear tyre pattern!
  25. Thanks Ruxy. And the markings or serial number on the Lwt wheels? What is that?
